How do these guys ever develop into top flight coaches?

Coach K was coaching at Army. He did OK. Where did Boeheim emerge from? Bob Knight?

Some people stop at nothing to be negative about PSU BBall.

This appears to be a solid hire - hard worker, over-performer, local ties.

Maybe we should have gone for Pitino and cleared the tables at Snap Pizza.
The are very good reasons for people to be negative about Penn State basketball. It has a long history of mediocrity. You mentioned 3 great coaches but there there are hundreds more who never achieved much of anything. This guy may be the exception but for now, many are sceptical. It will be interesting to see if there is any increase in season tickets. Good hire or bad? Time will tell.

I like Rhoades. I don’t expect Tournaments every year. I don’t predict winning B1G conference seasons. I think Penn State will be competitive, but fall short most years.

This is not football, where the $$$ spent and University commitment should produce top teams every year.

My dream for the basketball program remains the same since we joined the BiG. Finish in the top half of the conference 3 out of 5 seasons.

Of course, but Penn State has a very strong overall record in athletics and the student athlete over many decades (accelerating starting in 1966). So why not basketball? Where there is a will…And why such negativity? Take it to the Pitt Board - they are negative about everything…and toxically jealous of PSU.

And I’m all for chocolate cheesecake that’s rich and creamy, with no calories and not too filling.

In todays world of “college” athletics consistent finishes in the upper division of the B1G will require $$$$. Penn State will not pay for that in basketball. I’m ok with that. An occasional miracle season is possible, be realistic and hope for that.

What is unappetizing is the way Penn State will spin all this. “See what we did? We are spending the $ and making the strong commitment to be among the leaders.”
And you know all this how?

Why such negativity? Seriously? Scepticism of this basketball program, justifiably earned over the 50 years since I graduated, is not negativity but reality. 5 trips to the dance in 58 years does not merit the positive reaction you seek. I have positive feelings about our programs that have earned it. Wrestling, football, women's and men's volleyball, hockey, fencing, soccer...the list is long. Basketball does not merit that reaction. If it ever does you can count me among those who will jump on board the bandwagon. I will not hold my breath.

The guy comes from a perceived genius coaching line, he has won without his perceived genius coach, and he has some credibility/experience with the tournament. Good enough.

Just cut a blank check PSU (or whatever façade organization has to pretend to not be paying these guys ). Let the guy buy a good team with the portal and NIL over the next two years, coach them up, and keep the momentum going. What could it cost for a quality starting five, 1 to 2 million in total? Please, multi-billion dollar PSU and this alumni base should be more than good for it. All the revenue a consistently good basketball program would bring in through merch alone would pay for it. Get with the times and make it happen.

The biggest shame is Women's basketball....when Portland was here we were very good....now we are abysmal....is it reduced funding, poor selection of players, poor selection of coaching, lousy arena atmosphere,, poor selections at concession stands? Something is amidst in the Athletic Department concerning basketball

How about some really abysmal decision making by Ms. Excellence, Sandy Barbour, the gift that keeps on giving? Not only did she hire Kieger, but got her an extension last year (4/22).

If it's between paying a top basketball coach or lining up faux NIL deals for two 5* DTs, I want the DTs.

Yes. Rene had 21 trips to the dance in 27 years. Of course, the reasons for her departure in 2007 are well known, but aside from a few good seasons under Washington, the program has been in decline. Kieger, 12-43 in BigTen play in 3 seasons, appears to be in over her head. Thankfully we have a wrestling dynasty to get us through the winter.

Well at least with all these departures from the men’s team we have plenty of opportunities for Rhoades to offer playing time to new players to come in from the portal or to transfer. Let’s see what he can do to build a team now. It has to be attractive to many kids to be able to get on the court right away in a Penn State uniform and play in the Big10. If Shrews was able to do it, why not Rhoades?

I give you credit. Seriously. You have found reason for optimism in the departure of players. I hope you're right and, if so, you can take some of the credit.

This is a very good hire. Rhoades is a solid coach and I expect he'll recruit well enough to win consistently and get in the NCAA tournament more often than not.

My opinion… excellent hire in that I believe Kraft got us a coach who is going to be here for a long time. I don’t believe Rhoades sees this as a step to somewhere else, he is a PA guy and wants to make PSU a player in the game. I know some wanted to take a run at the FAU coach, but that guy is looking at other spots later on. We may very well have been in the same spot 2 years from now.

I think they should move the bball games back to Rec Hall for weeknight/ooc small teams(like St Francis) then move to the BJC for weekend games or games against tougher opponents that more butts will be in the seats. Oh, and also allow students to attend the games for free. I do like the how they moved the students to behind the benches. Not that this has anything to do with the coaching.

I guess it makes it complicated for the season ticket holders to mix the venues but I like the idea of the out of conference games at least at Rec Hall, and the students getting in free with seats behind the benches.

The program was in shambles by the time Rene retired, and sadly it has not recovered.

I will admit her last 2 years were sub-par, perhaps because of the controversy, but in the 7 years before that she won 167 games, an average of 24 a year. She slso made 7 straight trips to the dance and that included 2 Sweet 16's, an Elite 8, and a Final Four.

Not entirely. Coquese Washington made the NCAA tournament in four consecutive seasons, 2010-13, and won or shared the Big Ten title in the last three of those years.

“Penn State announced Wednesday that its board of trustees has approved a seven-year contract for Rhoades, who will make $25.9 million in total guarantees and can earn just over $1 million in additional incentives.”

Does this buy a house in State College?

Looks like Fisher from the old PSU staff has been named head coach of Temple. Good move for Temple. He can recruit and Temple is a complete dumpster fire right now with head of the university resigning etc.

I thought Fisher was the person to hire.

Coaching style continuity coupled with really affordable.
