Yeah I understand that CP, I was talking about the money sports 🏀 🏈 maybe I should have stated it better.
I was on campus 86-90 and can’t tell you where fencing was even held?
Understood.....and that thought did cross my mind. Wrestling and Hockey are limited participation sports....same with many olympic sports....which leaves football, basketball, baseball as featured sports which public and media perception is based. With 31 varsity sports funding can be complicated, decisions must be made

Well rumors flying Rhoads from VCU has been offered the PSU job
I’m ok with that.

It’s a clear signal it will be Penn State as usual. No reach for a high D1 winner, no huge commitment on coaches salaries, lip service to NIL, marketing and facilities.

Those who measure success on upper division B1G finishes and consistent NCAA appearances will be disappointed. It will be more Pat Chambers and NIT invitations.

$3MM per year. That's a lot of cabbage for a kid from Mahanoy City.
Based on the salaries paid this past year in the B1G only Minnesota, Wisconsin and Rutgers paid their coach less than what Rhoades will receive.

You can expect salaries to go up this year, but $3 million would have made you the 35th ranked coach in salary.

Agreed. I'm not a big basketball guy but a neighbor who is says, if true, this will be a safe, uninspired hire. Penn State will be a solid, middle of the conference, type team.

I think Rhoades would be an outstanding hire. He's got a very good game management profile and will likely be able to recruit players a notch in caliber higher than what he could get at VCU. He also knows that Pennsylvania landscape and I would think he'd be able to get into Philly to get the gems out of there.

And remember, PSU was a solid middle-of-the-conference team this season and you see where it got them. I think Rhoades would improve on what Shrewsberry did.

Rhoades isn't the home run hire we may have dreamt of, but I think there's enough potential there to not just totally shut off all expectations of an improved program.

We'll have to see how he handles this first year, after all of those graduations, and all those transfers, left the cupboard almost completely bare.

Eff Shrewsberry.

There was never going to be a home run hire. That would be akin to thinking the Pirates would sign a blockbuster free agent,

It's all relative. I wasn't expecting John Calipari. A "home run" for a program like ours, is what I was referring to. An exciting, definite high upside guy who could reasonably be expected to challenge for some better recruits.

i would love to move into the top third, rather than middle of the road!
And I’m all for chocolate cheesecake that’s rich and creamy, with no calories and not too filling.

In todays world of “college” athletics consistent finishes in the upper division of the B1G will require $$$$. Penn State will not pay for that in basketball. I’m ok with that. An occasional miracle season is possible, be realistic and hope for that.

What is unappetizing is the way Penn State will spin all this. “See what we did? We are spending the $ and making the strong commitment to be among the leaders.”

How do these guys ever develop into top flight coaches?

Coach K was coaching at Army. He did OK. Where did Boeheim emerge from? Bob Knight?

Some people stop at nothing to be negative about PSU BBall.

This appears to be a solid hire - hard worker, over-performer, local ties.

Maybe we should have gone for Pitino and cleared the tables at Snap Pizza.

I like Rhoades. I don’t expect Tournaments every year. I don’t predict winning B1G conference seasons. I think Penn State will be competitive, but fall short most years.

This is not football, where the $$$ spent and University commitment should produce top teams every year.

Bobby Knight was at Army with Coach K as his point guard...later to take over the Army program... Rick Pitino was at UMass, and Jim Valvano was at Iona.....all 3 were interested in PSU....but that is long ago. I like this hire....Rhoades watched Shaka Smart assemble a team and win....and many great coaches weren't overly successful their first rodeo. As for Coach Shrews...i wish he had stayed but maybe a silver lining from this snafu is our AD Kraft may take BB more seriously. Not to be a sunshine pumper but Kraft is new, and he had MBB, Wrestling, and MHockey all in tournaments at the same time. Hopefully Rhoades can save the 2023 class and within three years have a team capable of competing for B1G championship.

Why would we leak this? If he doesn’t accept we look pathetic.

Maybe Rhoads agent leaked it trying to stir up more interest or basically pin PSU down so they also don't start courting the coach from FAU

He took VCU to the NCAA tournament 3 of the last 5 years, and the NIT once. Plus he went to the Division 3 tournament 4 times in 10 years and won the conference 4 times in 10 years. I'd say his resume says he earned the job with PSU.

The good news is that at 5pm today we will get to the announcement. I’m sure we’ll get to hear from him and plan to build us a team from rubble. Because he’s starting with even less than Coach Shrews did

”The hire of Rhoades would be a significant one, as he has reached as many NCAA tournaments at VCU in the past four years as Penn State has in the past two decades. The risk for Rhoades is that he's leaving what is considered a high-end basketball job for a Penn State job that's considered one of the lower-end positions in the Big Ten.

Rhoades was making nearly $1.7 million at VCU and is expected to be able to nearly double that at Penn State. It would mark yet another big hire for the Big Ten, which, along with the SEC, has reaped the benefits of lucrative television contracts in recent years.”

FWIW, And not a critique of Rhoades' coaching abilities (I am not a board expert :) , and couldn't do that if I wanted to):
VCU went to the NCAA tourney for each of the seven years (7 for 7) BEFORE he took over there. (That was under Shaka Smart, and then the guy who went to LSU - before Rhoades got the job)

I take this as a positive. He continued the success Smart had instilled in that program. If they have gone to march madness once or none since Smart left then I would obviously question the hire. I look at Villanova this year. Wright took them to the final four last year. They lost some players and had a few injuries but Neptune didn't get them to the dance this year. For me doesn't mean he was a bad coach.

Will Wade is also a known cheater which may have positively affected his ability to make the tournament consistently at VCU.
