Now that we have seen our team for 3 games - what do you expect in Iowa game?

PSU at home at night against a team that struggles to put up points. PSU may not hit 30 this week, but a comfortable win. 27-10 or something like that as Iowa should struggle to put up points and the whiteout crowd will force a few mistakes.
a rational person might think that the offensive coaching staff would come up with some quick passes to get the defense to back away from the line of scrimmage....we'll see

On the other hand, Ill. was a really good defense that was playing kind of one handed because of their offense. I mean, 7 starters back from the top defense in the country, we knew it would be tough and would require a lot from a first year starter on his first road trip.
In their two other games - against TOLEDO and KANSAS:

The Illini defense surrendered:

957 yards
54 first downs (yes, 54)
62 points
16 of 28 on 3rd down
And an average of 35 minutes of possession for the opponents

Illinois has a couple good defensive players (#4 is outstanding), but they have a horrible defense.

Thankfully, for them, they now get to play a bunch of Big Ten west teams that have worse-than-horrible offenses (which also propped them up last year). A schedule of Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue, Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana, FAU, and Maryland will make a "just bad" defense look like the 1985 Bears.

Rutgers likely has a better defense than Illinois - but they don't get to play in the west.

so what’s your point, are you agreeing they don’t look ready for the big 2 after their illini showing?

Yeah....i struggle with the fact that Kansas seemed to have no problem, but we struggled a bit running the ball.

It is concerning.

Kansas will probably have a B12 competitive offense this year.
But: Toledo ran (and threw) the ball better, and more consistently, against Illinois, than PSU did. That is just a fact.
That doesn't mean Toledo is a better offense than PSU, certainly not. But it does show how poorly PSU's O played on that particular Saturday. It wasn't a juggernaut defense PSU ran into.

Is that along the lines of

Who wears short shorts?
We wear short shorts!
i.e.
Who hates Iowa?
We hate Iowa!
Pretty much. I'm convinced most Gopher fans do it to get under Hawkeye fans skin. The times I've actually went to Iowa, the fans were decent. In Minneapolis?

Hey I’m all in but on what I’d call a ‘down” year at OSU, but sadly I’m not digging the effort at illini. Take off the blue tints and rewatch the game.
funnily, us birds fans are having the same convos on 94 (boys and niners are the birds big 2)
being critical of the effort saturday doesn’t diminish my all in for state. (Dad/wife/bil/sil/nephew/me and of course 1&2 at about $350k cash)
Maybe you should rewatch the game yourself. Frankly, PSU won handily despite Allar having his first sub par game. I keep hearing how PSU has trouble stopping the run but Illinois rushed for 62 yards and averaged a whopping 2.1 yards per rush with much of that coming on QB scrambles and the 2nd and 3rd teamers late in the game.

Are we better after 3 games than last year? Defense, probably. Offense, a little behind. Yes as is everyone else I have been disappointed with the running game and the lack of explosive plays with the backs we have. Yes I was disappointed with Allar's inconsistency Saturday. On the other hand, Ill. was a really good defense that was playing kind of one handed because of their offense. I mean, 7 starters back from the top defense in the country, we knew it would be tough and would require a lot from a first year starter on his first road trip. I think he lost some confidence with the first dropped pass and some other key drops at key times that would have really moved the offense. The one really disappointing play related to inexperience was the missed opportunity when we had two open receivers, one on each side of the field that Allar didn't find. Remember how he mentioned earlier that moving up in the pocket or outside the pocket and keeping eyes downfield can change games. Well that's exactly what happened but the opportunity was lost. That one play would have changed our entire feeling about the game as the score, total yards etc would have looked so much different. This week he will face a really tough zone defense that puts a lot of pressure on the QB. With his arm, he can make Iowa pay if he is given enough time. This will be a real test for the OL. If we are to have a chance against the big 2, this is the kind of game we must win and use to grow this team.
I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere that Iowa had 3 sacks so far playing 3 lousy opponents.

It seems that Illinois had big trouble with the Toledo and Kansas, both who feature running QBs. It seems that the more pocket QB (like Drew) are more suited for them. Drew can run and did, but his approach was better for Illinois. Not even suggesting we would want Drew running a lot, but that aspect seemed to be where we were different than their other two opponents.

BTW - what is the weather forecast for Sat for Iowa game? if we can stay dry with little wind it will help us. any kind of mudder game helps Iowa.

I disagree that our defense mostly stopped Illinois until late. Illinois had 6 possessions in the first half but they only punted twice. Their possessions were:

46 yds, missed FG
18 yds, fumble
6 yds, INT
5 yds, punt
68 yds, TD
17 yds, punt

We can argue if PSU created the TOs or if IA kept stopping themselves.

You could argue the same thing when they punted.

Lets hope the rain does not affect the crowd. The white out effect is worth about 10 point boost for the Lioms

Turnovers are stops. Outside of the one INT by Carter, the other turnovers were definitely forced as opposed to gifts by Iowa.

Wow. Guess our defense just lucked into 5 (!!!!!) turnovers. Most ridiculous post of the day. Their offense was at the goal line, just stopped, turned around and handed us the ball, right?

Are you the guy who blames spelling errors on your pen too?

The delayed blitz was highly effective in getting pressure and hits on the ILL QB. If PSU can knock McNamara on his *** in Q1 I will feel better about PSU’s chances
I’m hoping he doesn’t do the rando 400 yard game against us (or 180 rushing by a red shirt junior backup)

The Storm Gods are now predicting that the approaching low will suddenly veer ENE after passing the DC area, thus saving Manny’s Do from excess dew.

Iowa is probably praying to the rain gods. Rain and wind not only hurt the white out crowd but impact the game. punting, field position, turnovers, etc now become the game.

100,000 people don't all have white raincoats and hats. I assume they'll be selling white ponchos but it's not the same. Let's hope the rain holds off.
