The ball carrier’s progress must be stopped and he must be brought to the ground for the horse collar to be called.
That’s how a referee explained it to me.

That's what I was thinking, the horsecollar isn't the grab, it's the part where you then pull him down by it (which usually involves the defender dropping his body onto the back of the carrier's legs). That's where the danger and broken legs came from and why it got banned.

I wasn’t in front of a TV for the second half of this game. Did most fans return to the stadium when play resumed after the weather delay?

A few musings before I call it a night:
  • I had a lot of fun watching the game today, so great to have PSU football back;
  • Really like some of the things we saw from the new offense. Obviously a lot to clean up, but that's expected in any opening game, especially against a legitimate opponent and with a new system. But I'm excited to see how this develops;
  • I miss tackling fundamentals. I guess I'm just old, but my God, wrap up and drive, don't just throw the back of your shoulder into legs. The most egregious example was the 4th down where the WV QB was dead to rights if Rojas just squares up, wraps up, and drives him back. Instead he did the flying shoulder, QB went over it, and got the 1st. Though I did really like Rojas out there generally today.
  • Felt like we were getting decent pressure, that WV QB just kept barely getting it off and finding someone;
  • Explosive plays are fun, we should keep doing those.

I just realized today that we have a bye Sept. 14. I don't even remember a bye so early. Was it previously filled and the schedule changes opened that up?

100% my friend--I said this when they hired him-let AK call his game with rhythm. Look at what he did with the play calling---created space and options. Franklin might have the best Coordinators he has had collectively since being here at PSU!
We did downgrade however, from Manny's hair to Tom's horrible choppers.

Most WVU fans skeedaddled back to their stills
& burning couches. Stadium was largely vacant when play resumed

I really liked the offensive play calling- including the missed two-point conversion. It's going to be hard for defenses to get comfortable.
Agree. And that is Coach K’s reputation. He is difficult to prepare for. That defense at WVU had already seen him at Kansas a few times and he still had wrinkles they were unprepared for. Also, he gets talented guys involved regardless of the depth chart.

Penn State with 42 carries for 222 yards. I bet Franklin felt relieved to get the runs throughout the game yesterday.

"Its an emotional violent game" ...completely agree, except it's always been an emotional violent game. College football has turned into "gangsta football". It's all different now.
We live in a society that tolerates flags and bumper stickers saying "Fu*k (insert name here). Coarseness and rudeness are everywhere, not just on college football fields.

The rain delay, obviously, wreaked havoc on DVR settings.

Anyone have a replay schedule?

TIA

Most likely FS1 or FS2. There was already a replay last night on FS2 I think.
Appreciate that, but just realized I don't get FS1 or FS2 :mad:
Maybe have to figure out a way online. Doesn't look like it's on the BTN60 schedule for today.

You mean the ones on this thread still complaining about a win? Or the ones who won’t come out of the wood work until after a loss? Or the ones complaining about the school academic rankings in a football thread? Or the ones complaining about past ADs for scheduling today’s game? Or all of the above??
Hey, stop it. I was messing around with Bob and I'm sure you knew that.

What makes you think there weren’t nasty things being said to each other before there were mics on the sidelines and you couldn’t hear it? That’s a bit of a naive take on the game.

In George Plimpton’s “Paper Lion” there was a rookie on the Lions who came off the field in his first preseason game and told Plimpton that he’d never heard such foul language in his life.

Carter move in this game is not helping. We took our best player on D and made him less effective. Against this team we need Carter at LB. He can erase the running of Greene from LB and likely get to QB easier.
Re-watched the game on FS1 today. I think Carter played better than many posters on here claim especially in the second half and considering it was his first game at the position.

If you read anyone who transitioned from a stand up LB position in college to hands down, closer to the line of scrimmage d-line position in the nfl, they’ll all tell you it takes at least a year to figure it out. I would assume Carter will be the same, only he’ll do it here and then jump to the league. He’ll have his moments, and struggle in others.

That makes sense. On the other hand, I think PSU did Parsons a disservice by keeping him at LB. Imagine what he could have done in college at DE.

Better than having a child rapist on your staff. STFU about Franklin
My friend, why are you so angry? I am a strong supporter of James Franklin. He was #1 on my list when he was hired. He's done a great job here at Penn State. I love the OC and DC hires. And I have no complaints about his recruiting. That being said, like all of us, he's not perfect. I question some of his game time decisions, such as going for 2 points o. The first score. I don't believe I'm alone with that criticism. And, IMHO, I believe we have not had a very consistent place kicker through much of Franklin's tenure. That's simply my opinion. And I'm not always right either. You can ask my wife on that point.

Felkins was 100% on FGs last year and 90% on FGs under 50 yards.
