Game was there for the taking 4 personal fouls (60 yards) in first 19 min, basically a pick 6, missing a field goal and taking the extra point and the last bomb for a int on 2nd and 1 come on man.
100%!! We could’ve should’ve would’ve AGAIN!! PS could have run the ball all night and kept the ball away from Oregon. Too many big big big mistakes.

It’s 100% the right decision. We’ve had numerous threads on here. It adds 10+% onto your odds of winning. Not doing it at this point should be highly criticized.
PSU could not afford to trade 7’s for 6’s and 7’s for 3’s with OU. PSUs best and only chance was to remain at one ‘regular‘ score and then hope for a turnover to tie it up. Making the insanely stupid decision to try for two put them behind the eight ball. If they were able to get another TD, then they would have needed a 2-pt conversion just to tie the fvcking game.

Franklin is 1-14 and will be 1-forever so long as he continues to make moronic calls like this.

If they drop teams that played for a conference championship below other teams with the same record (who did not), they undermine the whole conference championship game integrity. In no way shape or form should that happen if they want to maintain that integrity.
I'm not sure that "college football" and "integrity" belong in the same sentence. ;)

I will not be shocked at a 9 or 10 seed.

The turnovers were the reason for the loss. Our wide receivers did have one of their better games this season. That said, the officiating was still horribly poor.

My fear is that we won't be able to keep up with teams with NIL. We are not in a big city--or even near one. That takes away a lot of opportunities for commercials and the like. While it may shock folks, Columbus and Austin, for example, are now large cities (~15th in population--and growing). We are good--but not great. And I'm not sure we can get enough talent to get to great. In the new professional environment, we are a small market team.

Then the answer is to make State College a city. If you build it, they will come.

It’s very strange as to what is about to happen. I think we can agree that 5-8 are going to be ND, Texas, Penn St, and Ohio State. Did the committee achieve its goal of a structure where there is likely a better chance that the champion comes out of the 5-8 group versus the 1-4 group? I think I’m stating the obvious here that the seeding and byes outcome is ridiculous.

The mission here was to get a home playoff game and ultimately to be positioned where you play one of the weaker 1-4 seeds in round 2. The boys will play at home so mission (hopefully) accomplished there and I’m not sure there is a team in the 1-4 group that I wish to avoid other than ORE. Does Georgia really scare you? Do the misfit toys who get 2 of the #1 seeds scare you? Defend home field in the first round and I like my chances in Round 2 other than an encore with ORE. And if you avoid the turnovers in a rematch, I think ORE is also beatable given that they can’t stop the Nits run.

This thing is wide open after probably saying that ORE is the favorite. But the suits designed a ridiculous bracket. They have 2 teams that are lucky to be in the field not only get in but get a first round bye. That’s a ridiculous outcome.

This is going to be epic and our boys are in it. Let’s get after it.

My biggest takeaway is that the team who wins this will be the deepest team and maybe not the team with the highest top end talent. You are asking these kids to play a lot of football to get to the end.

Really fun game to watch and have zero issues with any coaching decisions by Franklin (play call on 2 pt conversion was bad but decision was fine; oh - and going deep on second on the final drive - also bad but whatever). The turnovers were killers but the penalties were nearly insurmountable. Think Oregon was called for two all night - Carter was held nearly every play he rushed. Which brings me to my one complaint - didn’t understand having Carter shadow Gabriel when he seemed much better when rushing (even if held). DG had more time to make plays and did when Carter just stood there.

Curious as to who we get next - seems like Bama or Tennessee? I’d love for SMU to take Bama’s spot though.

Love this shade from James…

Penn State outgained Oregon 518-466. Avg yds per play PSU 7.0 and Oregon 6.2. Franklin falls to 1-14 against top 5 opponents. Seeding projections from 6-8. ESPN noon announcement show. Some of the bracket draws appear favorable. The 8/9s get Oregon 2nd round, the 7/10s most likely Georgia.

A few things:

1. Someone find CJF's Analytics Sheet and throw it away.
2. Our 2 turnovers were the difference
3. At 8.3 ypc we should have run on that final drive. We had plenty of time.
I get the call. 2nd and 1, take your shot. It's a good call. But, with the benefit of hindsight we all want to just keep pounding it down their throat. The throw was a little off and the DB made an elite play. Wallace did all he could as well. It's hard to fault many people on that play, they all did what they should have to help their respective team.

Interesting Factoids- NCAA issued report on funding, NIL money and total athletic revenue. I would have guessed the Ducks had they coffers more Phil-led than PSU.
PSU NIL collective ranked 11th $13,793,489
Ducks ranked 20th $10,623,807
Ticket revenues PSU $44 million
Ducks $25 million
-Data as part of the upcoming House vs. NCAA settlement, football revenue sharing to the players
Oregon 3rd in revenue sharing $16.84 million
PSU 4th in revenue sharing $16.83 million

-PSU $53 million more in athletic revenue
-Total varsity sports 29 to only 18 for Oregon, it's time we cut our curling teams, etc.

Oregon is immensely beatable. Run the ball, don’t make really stupid mistakes.

It was clear pass interference. Not called. It was DUMB to call that play. Should have run the ball the entire game.

I agree. Franklin has been saying all year long that they have to clean up the personal fouls. My question to him is why haven't you done it? In both losses personal fouls had a major impact on the outcomes. If PFs have that much impact, why not make it a high priority to correct?

It’s such an obvious mathematical decision that goes beyond anything that could be determined with “feel”, “momentum “, etc. If youd ever consider doing for two, doing it after the first score is such an obvious decision.

It’s like playing poker (which is probably why @Grant Green and I feel strongly about it)…you might be able to win a hand/game here and there making sub-optimal decisions, but I’m always trying to make the right decision to maximize me EV. Going to 2 there is a completely obvious decision (and why good coaches are starting to do it every time).
If PAT = 95% and 2-pt = 53%, why aren't "good coaches" going for 2 literally every TD then???

.95 pts + .95 pts = 1.9 pts expected in two PAT attempts.

1.06 pts + 1.06 pts = 2.12 pts expected in two 2-pt attempts.

The answer is that the numbers don't tell the whole story and you have to factor in the flow of the game, the level of your opponent, etc. In that game last night most will agree that situation didn't call for a 2.

It is not the play as much as the idea that if it’s successful, it’s the fact that you are going to give the ball back to Ore with a lot of time. Now I guess you slow it down after the catch if you don’t score but Ore might take their TO’s left to have more time. I liked the idea of running it and bleeding the clock more.

The guy you were throwing it to isn’t Robinson or Godwin either. He did all he could and the Ore kid made a good play on it.

They played their asses off, I was good with everything at the end of the day. They forgot more than I’ll ever know.

Your PAT is too low and 2pt is too high.

“Most will agree” because “most” are resistant to change (and are also stuck on results based thinking).

Once upon a time, the thought of putting 3 infielders on one side was thought of as crazy. Then, after more and more teams embraced analytics and started doing it, MLB had to change their rules because it was too effective.

We’ve been seeing more and more coaches go for two down 8, and I can assure you it will only continue to increase.

Did Fleming play last night? I think it's safe to say we all had higher expectations for him. He never played up to the expectations coming out of high school. Maybe all the injuries, over the years, limited him.

Tom Allen neutralizing Carter by having him stand like a statue on 3rd downs was an absolutely baffling decision. On one third down late in the game he let Carter rush but dropped Dennis-Sutton into coverage. Overthinking.

Meh, it was completely unnecessary to take a shot there. Last thing we wanted was for Oregon to get the ball back with time to get into FG range.

I’ve said this forever. I would have no problem with a coach always going for two.
