This was probably mentioned somewhere in the 1000+ comments that I did not read, but I think it is really important.

Purdue had something like 16 starters that were 4, 5 or 6 year players. Granted, several just transferred into Purdue for their final year, but those types have to be greater than or equal to 4 and 5 star Freshmen or Sophomore first year starters. In the best Penn State years, we always had Junior and Senior laden teams, especially on the OL. Penn State won't see fifth year seniors much in future except special cases. In my humble opinion, that was a very good Purdue team and one that just may flip the Big West from Iowa/Wisconsin dominance. We were fortunate to beat them but I think in the big picture, we played pretty well. Time will tell.

From experience, if I watch a night game I don’t sleep afterwards, win or lose. Period. So I taped the game and went to bed early and wasn’t able to fall asleep. So I finally got up and turned on the game just as the final winning drive started. So I ended up not sleeping at all. What can I say?
I’d say to page through a math text book as that works for the majority of people trying to get to sleep, but that will only give you more energy I suppose.

Yeah, I tried that last night; I do this quite often, actually. Usually works, not last night. An interesting problem, though, really cool. Probably a poor choice of text as the author’s proofs are very sparse, you have to work hard to fill in the details.

I guess I was more taken aback that they will celebrate a mediocre performance and win. I can see if we knocked off OSU or a higher profile team. Its kind of feels like when Pitt beat us a little while back and the students rushed the field to celebrate(Like it was their superbowl) which many on here made fun of. We used to be a high profile program but we are now just mediocre and everyone seems to be okay with that. I must have set my expectations too high in my old age.
When I was in college we celebrated Monday. Then we celebrated Tuesday the next day. We didn’t need a real reason to celebrate, we just did it because we had nothing but free time. At like these students were celebrating an actual event.

I don’t get those of you who fell asleep/went to bed before the end of the game. I stayed up and was so glad I did. Great comeback. Afterwards, the coffee flowed like wine well into 1 a.m.
I agree. I always wondered why people leave games early when it's looking grim. They are guaranteeing they will miss the only opportunities there are for amazing endings.

Great stuff. Philip Bailey’s voice is unmistakable in the chorus.

CJF said it best 'lessons are learned from both Ws and Ls so better to have them and W' We'll see but true for now. If we don't see 30 yard runs against OH then we got problems ala Nova last year

The PSU pregame mentioned that Purdue had two 7 year players on the roster.

Confidence builder. Purdue was no slouch. Happy to see SOME semblance of a running game. I don't remember any mind-numbing play calls (an improvement!). Refereeing seemed overall balanced and fair. Great pair of wideouts with Washington and Tinsley.

Plenty of areas of improvement but that's always true after Game 1.

Gus and Joel were constantly wetting themselves over Purdue's QB and receiver. Drew Brees in the house. Too bad homers!

MAGICAL. o_O

We scored with 57 seconds left. Of course, it felt like pu had the ball for two hours afterwards.

I just noticed that the right tackle, #79, who was not doing very well(gave up pressures and sacks) was replaced by #72 on this drive(didn't notice that last night). #72 appeared to get on the defender much quicker and did a very good job on this drive. Granted, the defender may have been running low on conditioning but over fundamentals just looked better.

you're right and based off that drive alone, I'd start him next week.

“These types of losses can crush ya.” It would have been very hard to come back from that.
I hope it now doesn't crush Purdue. It would be awesome of they ripped of 11 in a row and won the West.

Effner (#72) seemed to get 1/3 of the snaps last night. Wallace did better than last year, but he gave up the worst rush that turned into a sack on a 3rd down coming off a TV time out.

Nourzad (#64) subbed in for Tengwall (#58) and Wormley (#77), mostly Tengwall.

Is that Bryce Effner? He did look pretty solid on that drive.

I am convinced that sports announcer really is the lowest bar possible when it comes to employment.

All those 2 jagoffs kept talking about was the time left and getting out of bounds and timeouts.

He didn't get out of bounds!
They gave him the out of bounds saving the time outs!

At NO point in that drive was my worry about the clock....

1st and ten at the 30 with 1:30 left and the idiots are talking about a field goal.

when did Wallace do better? The best play Isaw him make was a switch on a T/E stunt by the D . Heck 3rd play of the game he gets called for holding when he was soundly beaten

The root of our discord is that many in and around the program seem eager to celebrate being average. The funny thing about expectations is that when you keep them low, you rarely achieve great things.

I think expectations in and around this program need a reset. And that starts at the top.

Yup... 1st game. I want to see how the freshmen RB's work with the OL for a couple of games before judging. I did see some things that were encouraging to me with the OL and some negative things we saw last year with the OL. I like the patience of the RB's. I am willing to give them a few games before making a decision. I agree totally, I want to see some running lanes against Ohio, it will be concerning if we see a repeat of the Nova game.

Agree about the clock, no worries other than residual nightmares from previous games. That first-down run for 8, by Allen, on our second set of downs, I thought was a very good call. That play had the potential to get 15.

Roller coaster of emotions last night. I was mentally benching players but had to bite my mental tongue.

I was worried about this game for quite some time prior, this Purdue team pulled in some good transfers and O'Connell was on fire.

58 attempts and our pass D was tested big time. JPJ was picked on with the slants but faired well when he flipped to the other side. I like Manny's defense, can see the changes, more subtle than i thought.

Quite a difference with Drew's baptism of CFB compared to TR. He's got to be put in game , not blowout situations.

Mitch is the go to guy.

Line improved from last year, protect was good.

Freshmen RB's have mega potential, the 4-4 was a challenge for all RB's.

Overall this gives me optimism about this year, realistically'

Been a fan since 1967. Sorry, folks, but I never feel bad about a win.
Think about all the work these kids and staff put in.
Winning that game was great for them. Hope the plane ride back to Penn State gave them a chance to relax because they play again in 8 days and we fans look down on Ohio but if the players and staff consider this opponent as below PSU then they are ripe for a butt whooping.
Respect all, fear none.

So much for the good stuff.

Anybody else throw things at the TV when The Cincinnati Kid threw the Pick 6? I owe the Little Sisters of the Poor a few dollars for my language during and after that play.

I think the For The Blogy guys hit on this over the last year. When he gets excited, the mechanics leave the stadium and he overthrown his target. Dear Lord, Tinsley was so wide open.

Give the kid credit for bouncing back.

Johnson is straight up annoying. How many "Chuck Sizzle and Cincinnati kids" can an audience tolerate? He needs to control it better. Klatt is a f-in bias hack who hates PSU. We know the past with him. Listen to some comments 1. During Strange TD I believe, Tinsley got mugged on pass and drew PI. Ball was a little underthrown but close hit DB in back. Klatt "oh, I don't know about that call. Ball was not there. Penn State gets bailed out. They got free 15 there" F-you, Klatt. That is illegal and PSU got nothing free. 2. On Wheatley strip, which was a great D play on review "Oh that was the bad PU play scheme. He never had the ball" B-S, kid had the ball for 5-6 yards before strip. He never gave credit to Wheatley or Porter for heads up play. Klatt is just an a-hole. Intolerable

A bit more ... I bet a coworker 5 bucks yesterday that they get 9 wins. Get tired of his constant whining and he said if they lose at Purdue, they will wind up with 6 wins.

Reading these boards can lead to all the negativity.

Let's just enjoy the ride. PSU is 1-0 and tied for first in the Big 10 until Bielema's Illini and Fitzgerald's Wildcats thrash someone later this weekend.

Fixed my post. Was referring to Wallace doing better in G1 than any games last year. Not a comp to Effner.

I'd start the guys who played on the final drive vs Ohio. They came up big.
