How sad that they now celebrate mediocrity. I saw no improvement from last year. Mr Big Money coach is not improving this team. Blocking and tackling are still abysmal. I am happy we won but I mean we are still a sloppy, undisciplined, mediocre team.
You don't know much about football if you saw no improvement from last year.

We sat in section 101 and you could see down to where Purdue and their band would come onto the field. Two guys were ready to wheel out their victory bell and when we drove it down within their 20 with little time left and then scored, they had to move the bell back. I exhorted to then to “put that bell away” and was greeted by one finger salutes. A satisfactory end to what I thought was going to be a disappointing loss.

I hope @razpsu is stuck watching the presidential address in repeat for the next 24 hours. That is all.
Nope. Only cnn and msnbc picked up the incoherent hate speech. Lucky for millions the networks wouldn’t carry such hate.

Explain to me the improvements then? RBs being tackled in the backfield again, missed blocks again, dropped passes again, poor tackling again, receivers not open causing forced passes again, how is that an improvement from last year? Its the same thing year after year. I believe there are problems with the play calling/blocking schemes because we have the athletes to be better then what we saw last night.

Dude - they are kids.
Young Adults, not kids anymore, time to grow up because not everyone gets a medal just for showing up in real life. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, I guess it was all that pent up Covid sqaushed celebratory energy in their systems. At least there was no damage and no one got hurt.

Please forgive if a similar post was made earlier. My three takeaways from last night

1. Seemed the playbook on offense and defense was opened up in the 4th qtr when we needed it.
2. Offensive line play was still very suspect. I saw no real improvement over the previous decade of mediocrity.
3. Very little pass rush from the d-line on their own.

I thought the OL did fairly well early in the game. We were backed up deep in our own end and Singleton kept getting 3-4 yards between the tackles. We actually converted on 3rd and 1. The pass protection was pretty good all night. I think the running game problem is largely due play selection. Until the end we kept running straight between the tackles and dropping straight back to pass. Not many WR screens, rollouts, throwing to the backs, etc. It was just so predictable until that final drive.

IMO tackling is a different problem. Our LBs got owned all night. I suspect that's going to be a problem all season. We're going to really struggle against good running teams.

I didn't think the offensive line played all that bad - We ran the ball well enough to keep the defense honest and it opened up a couple of nice plays off of play-action. There were no gang-rush losses on running plays like we've seen in the past, mostly positive gains. Pass protection was above average as well. Wallace though at RT, yikes - seemed like he got pulled in the second half and rightfully so as he continues to struggle mightily there. Lots of rumors that he should be a G, do we try and slide him inside at this point?

From CBS sports:

Wins are wins, and Penn State won't give them back, but I wouldn't get too excited. First of all, Penn State's offensive line did not play well for what feels like the 50th consecutive year. The Nittany Lions spread the ball around in the running game but averaged only 3.4 yards per carry (not including sacks), and nobody on the team averaged more than 3.9 yards per carry.

Purdue's rushing attack averaged a nation's worst 2.79 yards per carry last season. Against Penn State it improved to 4.1 per carry.

What the hell? College kids hitting the streets to act like college kids and jump around for a little bit bothers you? I don’t get it.

It is a sad fact that OL and Clifford are what they are. It will be cringeworthy many times. The hey day of physically dominating opponents is over and it has been for sometime. Even look back at Cotton win when Journey was a beast. We were in a dogfight well into the 4th. Conceptually, we care more about explosive plays in passing game. Last year, we had Dotson who had other world hands and speed. We don't win 3 without his individual effort to make something out of nothing. That was my biggest fear last night - nobody to step up. I saw some positives, obviously Strange and Warren made big contributions. Theo Johnson is hurt so a piece missing but TE was huge improvement. If you did not enjoy lock down corner play then not sure what game you were watching. Castro Fields was no where near that dominant last year. The two-minute playbook was beauty. Last year, we had little pass plays to RB but that wheel route to Lee was perfection. Aidan O'Connell is a great QB. He puts ball where it should be and can read D very well. We held on against best pure passing attack in BT. Look at young players across team, especially on D. The Kings, Eldson, Sutton, Chop, Vanover, Dixon, Beamon and even Sutherland new at LB. Beamon, PJ, Adisa just returning after missing 2021. On offense, we relied on Singleton, Allen as true FR to get yards, no TOs as well as block. They passed with flying colors. Allar looked good as well. We also forget the intangibles - Thurs night game on road, hostile environment, O'Connells b-day, Len Dawson passing and Drew Brees in attendance. Expectations and emotions were through the roof for PU and we won. Celebrate - hell yes. We were left for dead and Fox analysts and BT network were not complimentary of us before game. Even after game Dinardo, Griffith and crew blamed Brohm for last of 4 m drill and gave us little credit. Us against world now.

If we have to hear announcers totally beset with hyperbole, it was nice to have it coming our way for once. Right after the winning TD, these guys were squealing like teenage girls talking about how it was the best game winning drive in history!

This reminds me of the last Rosebowl in that we entertained the country. But with W this time.

Can’t argue with any of that. 😞

I'd like to think that this is a solid to very good Purdue team, but these types of losses can crush ya. A good many pegged this as a loss. Best you can hope for is Purdue ends up winning 10 or 11 games and this gets looked back on more fondly.

The bright side is Allar got some snaps at crunch time and he looks very solid. Our RBs are improved and the line wasn't a swinging gate. LB is going to be iffy and running teams could be a nightmare, but there was plenty good to build on.

Some random observation...

Brown is a better FS than SS. Much like Jacobs going from Sam to Will, these moves hurt 4 positions instead of 2. He likely catches the one INT Ellis batted down. Was shocked we saw Carter so early. He should be available for Ohio, right? We need LBs.

“These types of losses can crush ya.” It would have been very hard to come back from that.

I will agree that there were some bright spots in hopes of future improvement. The RBs were great and made moves that got them more yards in spite of some not so great blocking. I was impressed with Allar's passes that were spot on target. I get there may be first game jitters for a lot of the new players and adjusting to the speed of the game. However, the overall product has not improved from what I saw last night.

I guess I was more taken aback that they will celebrate a mediocre performance and win. I can see if we knocked off OSU or a higher profile team. Its kind of feels like when Pitt beat us a little while back and the students rushed the field to celebrate(Like it was their superbowl) which many on here made fun of. We used to be a high profile program but we are now just mediocre and everyone seems to be okay with that. I must have set my expectations too high in my old age.

Haven’t you heard? PSU’s rankings are in free fall. The students are all mediocre, well-heeled, out-of-staters who can pay. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity. These kids identify with mediocre.

I don’t get those of you who fell asleep/went to bed before the end of the game. I stayed up and was so glad I did. Great comeback. Afterwards, the coffee flowed like wine well into 1 a.m.
From experience, if I watch a night game I don’t sleep afterwards, win or lose. Period. So I taped the game and went to bed early and wasn’t able to fall asleep. So I finally got up and turned on the game just as the final winning drive started. So I ended up not sleeping at all. What can I say?

Tear down the goal posts after the whiteout win on 9/10? Oh wait, that's Ohio U, not tOSU.
