...and made rather badly, apparently, is that it won't take a final destination job to pluck Mullen from MSU. I can see a mid-level ACC or Big 10 team taking him if the opportunity arose. He has a much better chance to keep a program at the top of its conference at someplace like Virginia, NC State, Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan State, etc, than he does clawing uphill against LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and any of the other 2nd-tier SEC programs that assert themselves on a given year. Even on a good year at State, he probably won't do better than 8 wins in the regular season. For a coach with options, that's not going to cut it.

Sherrill was over 10 years then Croom for 5. Did you think we should have kept Croom around for some of that stability? Stop being so melodramatic.

I really can't see him leaving State for Virginia or Northwestern.

of SEC coaches leaving to other conferences. The SEC is where most all coaches in the nation long to have a shot, outside of a few select programs that several have named. No way in hell Mullen, or any other SEC coach leaves for a middle tier ACC gig. You are certain that youre a stepping stone program, Im just asking you to prove what youre talking about. There might be some examples, but none come to mind. SEC coaches dont leave exept to move up within the conference.

because there hasn't been many young pedigreed coaches at the mid & lower-tier SEC schools. Most of those hires have been retreads or older coordinators. Tubby is the only one I can think of besides Brad Scott, and Tubby had pedigree, much like Mullen. Tuberville is also from Arkansas and had said he wanted to stay in the South. I could see Mullen going to a final destination job in the SEC from MSU (UT sticks in my head and has for a long time, for some reason...Kiffin is going to mouth his way out of that job eventually), but you have to remember that he's not a southerner...I've never heard him say anything that led me to believe he was set on staying in the South. He's a good guy and he says/does all the right things, but don't think for a second that MSU's membership in the SEC is going to hold him here over a better job that he wants, even a marginally better job.

So you cant come up with ANY examples of what youre worried about? You've almost backpeddled your way right out of this thread. I suppose I'll just let it be now, since youve completely helped me illustrate my point. Mullen simply isnt going anywhere anytime soon....outside of the SEC.

You're looking for examples of young coaches in the SEC that have left for other jobs...there haven't been many young coaches in the bottom half of the league, for the most part. Mullen and Tubby are about it. It doesn't matter that Tubs stayed in the league...the fact is that he had success at a lower program and used it to grab a final destination job. I don't think Mullen has any ties to the South, really, and when better jobs at other conferences come open, he'll go.
