Rte 100 in Vermont is supposedly beautiful - a fair number of covered bridges. So it's a good road trip. It ends at the Canadian border - so if you can, go into Canada in south eastern Quebec, and hit up some of the local vineyards. People and area are very nice.

Love Vermont - we did Stowe and Burlington two years ago and it’s retirement worthy…

Exciting, maybe, maybe not. Cutting my grass twice a week in 90+ degree heat.
Then sit in my pool with some cold ones.
Actually, renting a $3.5 million house in Crystal Beach in Florida in June. Sister in Pittsburgh is coming down with her husband and her oldest daughter, her husband and 2 kids are driving down from Cleveland. Step-son and his family, daughter and her husband will be there.
We will rent a pontoon boat for one day (son-in-law is certified as a boat captain in LA and Florida), a round of golf and might go deep sea fishing.
The house has its own pool, 7 bedrooms and 8 baths, a 6 person golf cart and 6 bikes. Three blocks from the gulf.

I know we are all excited about football since it is only 100 days until Labor Day. Last I checked that is summer!!! 😎🤣. So what are your plans!!!!

My son graduates high school on June 2nd. Begining June 6th we are going to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Paige, Moab and Salt Lake City for 2 weeks to spend some QT together before he heads off to Boston University in the fall. Looking forward more to the time spent than I am the actual trip although I am very much looking forward to seeing that part of the country.

Awesome! I was in Sedona, GC, and Flagstaff back in December- loved it. Wish we would have gone into Utah too. Enjoy, good luck to your son.

Busy with vacations; taking the family (kids are 6 & 8) to Paris and London for a week each, Hawaii with the extended fam for two weeks, and Myrtle Beach if we can fit it in. Next year hoping to do Tokyo with the kids.....
Once you shared that you were venturing over to Paris I knew I had to share this video. Funniest thing I’ve seen in months. The background protests completely make this video.

Perhaps you and children could do your own croissant challenge. 👍

Any suggestions are welcome. Seward, Kodiak Island, Homer, Fairbanks? Trying to narrow down what to do with a weeks time before the cruise.
Greetings Relayer

I highly recommend a 1/2 day fishing charter out of Seward.

You can be the worst , most unlucky fisher person in the world and you will come to the dock with more fish (halibut and salmon) than you can imagine.

Fishing has never been easier. If you desire halibut you simply drop your line to the bottom and reel up 2-3 feet. If you desire salmon reel up half way and be a bit more patient.

The boat crews clean what you caught and you can arrange dry ice shipping back home.

It defines how easy fishing should be.

Park City is a quaint little ski town just up into the mountains less than an hour from SLC. Only been there during ski season, but they often have summer activities to fill the gap. Nice shops and restaurants.

I’m going to color outside the lines a little since much of this technically is not during summer. Anyway:

My wife and I just got back from five weeks in Calabria, Italy, with a three-day side trip to Malta. Calabria is where my paternal grandparents were born, got married, and had their first couple of children before immigrating to the U.S. We and our children and grandchildren became citizens 6-7 years ago and we have a place in my grandfather's hometown -- where we've come to know the nicest, most generous people we've ever met. In addition to the townspeople, we've been fortunate to become close friends with many Swedes, Welsh, Irish, English, and Australian people who have also bought either in our hill/mountain town or in one of the nearby beach towns. Due to lack of competent PR and direct flights from the U.S., this beautiful but startlingly inexpensive area is largely undiscovered by Americans . . . Highly recommend both Calabria and Malta, which has its own distinct beauty.

Most of the actual summer will likely consist of softball 2-3 times a week, hopefully pickleball in similar or greater quantities, pool time when the weather cooperates, and occasional golf.

At the end of summer, my wife and I will head back to Calabria for a few weeks, where we will be joined by four of our friends for the last 5 days before all six of us head on a 40th anniversary trip together. I was one of four Tioga House/Shunk Hall guys who in the 1970s became (and still are) close friends; all of us married in 1983 (three of the four meeting our wives at PSU) and, defying the odds, are celebrating our 40th anniversaries this year. Three of the couples will be celebrating with 2 days in Lake Maggiore, 2 days in Lucerne, then a 10-day or so Rhine River cruise followed by 2 nights in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, the fourth couple can't make it but we'll drink a toast to them somewhere (maybe everywhere) along the way.

It's nice to be retired and like many of you, we are lucky/blessed . . .

Oh yeah - golf, ballet, robotics, tennis, etc. But, definitely up for recommendations. Want to get the kids to a sleep away camp one of these summers but they’re heavily resistant…

Here you go. Two camps, one for boys and one for girls, which are about two miles apart. No electronics. Hand written letters to family and friends. You may purchase/send emails which are printed and delivered to your children but they are not allowed to email back. These camps are amazing and the kids that go there absolutely love the place.

My first time there I was taken aback at the number of helicopters parked on the golf course. That was fathers dropping off their children. There were two Princesses at Camp Seafarer and three Princes at Camp Sea Gull the first year I dropped one of mine off. This place has a large endowment.

Oh, do the four week camp, you won't regret it. Probably too late for this year and certainly too late for the first session as it's the most popular. One more thing, don't do the horseback riding. The horses aren't located on the main camp and most of the kids that signed up for horse riding quickly regret it.

Watch the video on this page from their website. This camp is different from others in many ways. Heck, they wouldn't allow Obama's girls to attend because the security might bother the other campers.

That's a great trip and you'll love the landscapes. I'll be in the Paige area in a few weeks after driving across southern Utah. If its within the budget, consider a hot air balloon ride in Sedona. Its a must do. Northern Lights Balloon Expeditions

@razpsu Good thread!

Headed to Ohio to visit D1 and drop a child off (son attending summer camp at Miami University - future Redhawk I think); driving around CO with my wife, visiting Crested Butte and Great Sand Dunes to take photos; later, heading to Wilmington to drop 3D at shark camp; and, then in August returning our cancer free D2 to New Mexico to restart her junior year. Contemplating western Carolina for RV trip.

Plus,

the usual...

If you don't go to Denali, then I'd cross Fairbanks off the list. I spent about a day in there when we visited Alaska, but wouldn't put it on my list of must sees, and doubt I would have even visited it if we weren't coming from Denali.

Seward is fun if you go on one of the day cruises. Typically you'll see orcas, glaciers calving (from Kenai Fjords NP), whales, and other interesting wildlife. I think we also visited the Alaska Sealife Center while we were there, and it was interesting

Homer is pretty popular. My wife's cousin lives there, and we stayed with her, so I didn't exactly have the tourist experience. I'd highly recommend that if you go there, you book a floatplane trip from Homer to Brooks Falls (Katmai NP), to watch the bears feasting on the salmon that are jumping the falls.

We didn't get to Kodiak Island, so I can't offer any thoughts, pro or con, on that as a destination.
Thanks for the responses! Tom we are doing the 8.5 hour Kenai Fjords cruise that goes all the way to the Northwestern Fjord. We'll be in Seward 3 nights after two in Denali. We will do the Denali ATV tour and some hiking, but what intrigues me is the glacier landing plane tour that puts you on a glacier 8 miles from Denali's summit. It's $700 a pop, but I'm sure we'll be booked after a little more liquid indulgence this evening.
Heading south from Anchorage towards Homer is a treat unto itself. Stunning scenery. If you can, take a side trip to Whittier - it's a very odd town, but worth spending a 1/2 day.
ro, we are picking up the cruise ship at Whittier. We might have a couple hours there, so will see how "odd" things are. Hell, if there's a place to grab a beverage, could be my new favorite town.

The entire town of Whittier is one building. It stems from being a former military post.
in order to get there you have to go through a tunnel. Which is shared with the train. So you have to sit and wait for the train to go through before you can drive through.

We are dropping the rental car off in Anchorage and taking the train to Whittier. Our cruise doesn’t leave until 8pm and the train gets in at noon. We should have a few hours to explore the area.

My daughter runs the 400 like a turtle. 😎 what events are your daughter in.
I spent many an evening at my kids football games, soccer games, cross country and baseball games. I don’t regret a minute.

However, if the Doctor ever tells me I have one day to live I want to spend it at a swimming meet, because they never seem to end.

Lancaster, PA. Google it for retirees. Often at or near the top. Better weather than PGH, lower taxes than MD. Doesn't snow much below the turnpike in this area. Two surveys have it #1.
One of the most boring places on the planet. The natives are not friendly, they have a preponderance of restaurants that sell meatloaf, adult activities are limited and the main attraction is corn stalks. The entire place closes at 10:00. And this from a guy who comes from Harrisburg. I know boring.

Obviously you are hanging with the wrong crowd, and you need to up your burn rate if all you find are meatloaf places.
