I’m going to color outside the lines a little since much of this technically is not during summer. Anyway:
My wife and I just got back from five weeks in Calabria, Italy, with a three-day side trip to Malta. Calabria is where my paternal grandparents were born, got married, and had their first couple of children before immigrating to the U.S. We and our children and grandchildren became citizens 6-7 years ago and we have a place in my grandfather's hometown -- where we've come to know the nicest, most generous people we've ever met. In addition to the townspeople, we've been fortunate to become close friends with many Swedes, Welsh, Irish, English, and Australian people who have also bought either in our hill/mountain town or in one of the nearby beach towns. Due to lack of competent PR and direct flights from the U.S., this beautiful but startlingly inexpensive area is largely undiscovered by Americans . . . Highly recommend both Calabria and Malta, which has its own distinct beauty.
Most of the actual summer will likely consist of softball 2-3 times a week, hopefully pickleball in similar or greater quantities, pool time when the weather cooperates, and occasional golf.
At the end of summer, my wife and I will head back to Calabria for a few weeks, where we will be joined by four of our friends for the last 5 days before all six of us head on a 40th anniversary trip together. I was one of four Tioga House/Shunk Hall guys who in the 1970s became (and still are) close friends; all of us married in 1983 (three of the four meeting our wives at PSU) and, defying the odds, are celebrating our 40th anniversaries this year. Three of the couples will be celebrating with 2 days in Lake Maggiore, 2 days in Lucerne, then a 10-day or so Rhine River cruise followed by 2 nights in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, the fourth couple can't make it but we'll drink a toast to them somewhere (maybe everywhere) along the way.
It's nice to be retired and like many of you, we are lucky/blessed . . .
