Wednesday (9/18) is the birthday of Joanne Catherall. She has one of the crazier stories of joining a band. The original Human League had lost half its members due to a nasty split-up, but had a tour scheduled and was in debt to its record company. So Philip Oakey went to a club in Sheffield to try to find a female backup singer for the band, and was struck by Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley while they danced together. While neither of them had ever sung professionally, and were both still in high school, he convinced them (and their parents) to join the band as dancers and incidental singers. By the end of the tour, they were full-time members of the band, and went on to be more than incidental vocalists. To celebrate:
