I shudder in fear. That isn’t a joke.
I wouldn't worry about it. We basically have food and medicine backwards here. We are surprisingly generally harder on drug approval than Europe and extremely lax on food regulation.

I'd be fine loosening up regulation on both except people really do trust the FDA and assume that if something is allowed on grocery store shelves, it's fit for consumption, so we probably should move closer to european regulations on food, with some recognition that we have much longer supply chains and can't just get to where they are over night.

Also, this thread got the Ole Devil thinking. First, just smoke weed if you need a buzz that bad. Second, is there anything better than coke out of a glass bottle? Third, something is going to send you to me or dad eventually, so you might as well enjoy it. If you enjoy drinking, then have fun. If not, then move on to one of the other frequently available vices out there.
Can't say from first hand experience, but one time when I was out of my element I saw somebody snort some some coke off of the top of the boob of a girl showing a lot of cleavage, and it looked like they were probably enjoying that more than I personally enjoy coke out of a bottle. Surely somebody on SPS can say definitively which is better.

Are there any hotels that still have actual glasses in the rooms?
I feel like every hotel I stay in that tries to pretend to be a step up from Holiday inn or Hampton inn or whatever still has actual glasses. If there is a hotel bar and I want to have a drink in the room, I'll grab a glass from there and bring it up. Or if there's not, I'll just drink out of the coffee cups.

Europe and US food regulations aren’t as far off as you think. It’s a bit of a misconception that Europe has a much more stringent system but there’s quite a few ingredients, dyes, preservatives etc that Europe allows that aren’t allowed here and vice versa.

Obesity is associated with and increase in cancer too; can’t wait for all food products to have a carcinogen warning added to the labels.
While I agree with the point you were making, this proves another somewhat related point as well.

Overconsumption of food is obviously an issue in America, no doubt. But what's in our food, even if you eat perfectly portioned amounts and remain at a normal BMI, is probably every bit as carcinogenic as alcohol, yet like you said, no one bats an eye.

I traveled to Switzerland last month and it was my first time in Europe. 9 days over there eating their food, drinking their water, and I came home feeling better than I have in a long time. Even my wife was raving at about how clear her skin felt. And nothing there was "organic this" or "non-GMO" that. It just was real, whole food without all the other stuff added in as filler.

Of course alcohol will hurt you.... its a poison. But so is alot of crap thats quietly integrated into our food that no one bats an eye at.

What if the next administration says the same exact thing? Trump is a teetotaler, himself....and eats his steak well-done with ketchup.

Greatest line I ever saw Trump make was when he said something like “can you imagine me drunk? That would just be awful”.

Don’t ever see any obese Asian folks either. No dairy in their food?

I have had prostate cancer since 2012. I often visit a very good prostate cancer message board that has an international group of participants. The conundrum with European medicine seems to be that although they do have a few more treatment options, due to expediting approval of certain drugs, the waiting times for doctor's appointment (particularly an oncologist) are sometimes horrible. With all of it's faults and flaws I still prefer our system for that reason.......AT THIS POINT.

A lot of that is hereditary.
Yup. May be dated now, but it used to be if you looked at life expectancy for asians in the US, it was higher than life expectancy of japanese in Japan. Which is impressive because Asian in the US includes some ethnic groups that don't have good life expectancies (although they're generally for areas that plausibly could have low life expectancy because of environment/diet rather than genetics).

For a lot of things the US is compared to against small, relatively homogoneous (at least until the most recent waves of immigration) European countries, the supposed underperformance of the US suddenly becomes overperformance when you do very rudimentary controls.

Not the same thing, but even healthcare, where our spending is so out of control compared to everybody else, we're basically in line when you account for how rich we are and how much actual treatment we get.

The only thing we're really exceptional for (ignoring civil liberties), is we really do have a lot of guns and a lot of murder.

I'll never drink out of a glass in the hotel room. Ain't no dishwasher up there, but there are a lot of soiled towels on the floor that might be used to wipe them down. I'm just going to start wearing a Tyvek suit in my hotel rooms going forward.

Even if there's a little pleated paper cover on it? ;)

All the reports from all these organizations about alcohol causing cancer only came out after the COVID vaccine was known to cause cancer. They are trying to cover their tracks and blame it on alcohol.

Probably the first time I stayed at a hotel/resort where the criteria wasn't "cheapest one that is likely to have clean sheets", we were in the caribbean and our room, which was basically a suite with kitchenette, had a bar set up. While we were exploring the suite and figuring out what all we had, we noticed a semi-nasty rag draped across the p-trap under the sink. Didn't think anything of it; just figured the cleaning wasn't that thorough and they didn't look under the sink to get the rag left there by the prior guest. Had drinks that night in the room and the next morning went out and came back to our room while it was being cleaned, just in time to see the maid finish wiping out our glasses with that rag before draping it back over the p-trap. That was probably 18 years ago and I haven't drank out of a hotel glass since then, unless it was something like a residence inn where the kitchenette had dishwashing soap where I can wash it myself before hand, but even then I only do that if I can't find a disposable cup anywhere in the hotel.

Years ago we were down in Mexico with two other couples. We had rented a VW van and we’re out exploring. This was long before the drug cartels. We stumbled upon a beachside grill, beautiful like something out of a movie. We ate lunch, authentic Caribbean Mexican, spent the whole day on the beach in front of the place snacking on chips and salsa and drinking beer. Even ate dinner before we left, place was fabulous. We were the last people to leave but met a couple coming in as we left. Wife left her coverup and realized when we got in the car so I went back in To get it. Waiter had cleaned our table and other tables, he was behind the bar raking all the salsa from the bowls he had cleaned up into one bowl and proceeded to serve it to the couple that had just walked in. Some of those bowls had been out on the beach with us for hours. I tried to tell the couple when the waiter left the table but they didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak whatever.

In school I always heard the mexican restaurant everybody loved in Columbus (mexican kitchen maybe? long time ago) reused salsa off the table.

Semi-related, but talked to an electrician one time about going to a mexican restaurant. He wouldn't go because he worked on an issue in the kitchen one time and he said they just fried their chips and dumped them into basically a big barrel, then used the basket the put on the table to scoop the chips otu of the barrel. Said the chips would be visibly moving from whatever critters (presumably rats?) were going to town in the bottom of the barrel either eating or maybe trying to escape. One of the few times I heard something about a restaurant that was actually worse than I assumed and caused me to not eat there again.
