This is where I traditionally post something slightly sarcastic, but given that the dollar is down 10% since February, and other economic conditions have changed, I’ve actually begun to look at foreign investments/currency and even considered a hedge position in bitcoin. Never say never I suppose…Happy for anyone who works because they want to, but a middle class existence requiring two full time incomes is a consequence of monetary debasement.

A wife has to make pretty good money for it to make financial sense for her to keep working in the short term. Cost of day care and then her income is effectively taxed at your marginal rate, plus you end up spending more money on food and then there are things like house cleaning that start to make sense, plus there is all the stress and the potential of holding back both of your careers by neither one being able to give it 100%. I would be shocked if it paid off for a teacher to work during the daycare years, although there is something to be said for the retirement benefits being accrued. My wife’s a teacher. Took off for 7 years when kids were born then went back. I honestly have no idea how we financially survived those years and were able to still take some decent vacations and not really penny pinch. I guess what you save by not commuting to work each day, and her being home able to cook meals more often makes up some for the lost income.
That's not how that works. First, a middle class existence doesn't require two full time incomes. It is harder than it should be because we have made housing, education, and healthcare unnecessarily expensive through regulation (more so for the first two than the last, but still a lot on the last also), but we also have significantly elevated what is considered a middle class existence.Happy for anyone who works because they want to, but a middle class existence requiring two full time incomes is a consequence of monetary debasement.
