Oh, no doubt you're right. I should have said that I am not necessarily in favor of eminent domain. I also think there is a responsibility on the property owner/owners to maintain the building up to a certain standard. Not sure if that would have helped in this case.
That seems to be a very common problem in some of the smaller towns. I see it around here (Bel Air, MD). The property owners let the strip malls go to hell then don't do anything to keep up appearances but still charge crazy rents until the owners move out. Then the buildings sit empty. And instead of renovating the existing building they just buy new land pave it and put up a new building.

I always thought eminent domain was reserved for things that are needed, like expansion of a school due to population growth for example

Or taking land to run utility pipes
For utility pipes, the utility company is typically granted an easement.

Same with me. Most of my old haunts are long gone, Train Station, The Caboose (Loved the upstairs backgammon tables) Dark Horse, Post House, Gingerbread Man, The Brickhouse.
Thank God Zeno's and Cafe 210 is still around.

Dark horse pazzos choice wings on sale. Not that you could ever get a seat but man those were great wings. I worked at the Cafe so that will always be close to me. Though somehow I never ever watched a band play there. I guess I liked the patio.

Is the mayor of State College still master of his eminent domain?

When I was in school, the mayor was Arnold Addison.

So, I can remember who the mayor of State College was in the mid 1980s, but I have no idea who the mayor of own hometown is today.

The cities of the Lehigh Valley have seen a lot of investment in the last 15-20 years. A lot of older buildings are getting renovated vs. torn down. I am in the Easton school district. Developers are putting a lot of money into old industrial buildings and converting to apartments in this area. There is a lot of demend due to the migration west from NYC and the major NJ cities.

Pedro's was good, Susie Wong Egg Rolls is another oldie but goodie. Roy Rogers was always good on the way home from the bar.
Fond memories of Roy's. Leave bar wee hours of the morn, go Roy's and get a $1 bacon chs burger, then go to salad bar, and fill the entire to go bag. That $1 would get me thru the rest of the weekend. One time the manager came out to salad bar and started yelling at me, and chased me out the door, good times....

Technically, I wasn’t tossed, I was asked to leave. Some frat boy was trying to be a one man mosh pit, and after about the sixth time that he jumped into the band’s one speaker almost knocking it over, I put a hand on his shoulder and told him to settle down. He went and told a bouncer.

Of course, the frat boy and four of his brothers followed me out and tried to jump me as I was crossing Pugh St. Fortunately, they were stupid enough to do it right in front of a parked police car and nothing happened.
This sounds like it needs its own thread. "Have you ever been kicked out of a State College bar and why" "or denied entry"

I really enjoyed the Brewery. It wasn't a rowdy bar, just a good place to go to last call or earlier. Music was typically fine. My typical downtown evening was music at the Scorpion and then Carl's bar or the Brewery. What was Carl's bar called? Spacing on that

$4 Pizza Pi pizza and AUCD drafts Tuesday 6-8 in the mid-80’s. Went through SC last month with the family. Downtown is flat out ugly these days as a whole. There are some quaint structures remaining but when there are rehabs gone bad and monolithic eyesores among them, well the result is bad.
Zenos used to do an all you could eat spaghetti nights on Thursdays. I can't remember the price but that was my typical Thursday night meal in '85. Gman had the .25 draft nights and it hadn't become frat bar yet so I spent a lot of time there Tues and Thursdays.
Dark Horse and I think Cafe 210 as well had Bass Ale on tap and I loved that stuff.

Scorpion was best live music venue in mid-80’s w/Brewery as runner-up.

Zeno’s was my fav overall, but I wasn’t a big bar person due to being a December kid and on a limited budget.

How about the Char Pit? If you got #69, the crowd would cheer.

“The Municipality is committed to working collaboratively with the community and local businesses.”

Kudos to the politicians who have now decided to “collaborate with“ the people they’re supposed to be serving.

I bet the borough will pay a big premium to the Brewery owners based on projected future lost earnings. Don't you think? I kid! I kid!

It really is a lovely structure. It looks like the owners have put a lot of money into its appearance over the years.

The owners of the brewery I believe would not own the building. The owners of the building will make out big time.
While I was there last week talking to some business owners and former owners of downtown businesses told me that the lack of retail businesses downtown is the reason restaurants are failing due to lack of the downtown being a destination for people to come and walk around and spend the day or evening. When I see so many restaurants now for sale or lease that have been there for a while it makes sense. As much as I want to open a restaurant downtown I just do not see it happening. If it isn’t a bar or psu clothing store it just doesn’t survive long.
