Seems like Franklin really needs outstanding coordinators, but they come and go easily these days. Dropoff in D performance from Diaz to Allen has been disturbing. Hard not to think about a PSU team led by Diaz on D and Kotelnicki on O.
Head coaches need good coordinators? Shocking! In other news water is wet.

Ummm most HCs need outstanding coordinators, at least one.

Not sure even Manny coukd do much for our secondary. That has been the weakest part of the D for the most part.

Defense really needs to get its act together. Liked a suggestion I saw that if holding is not being called put Carter at LB for most of the snaps, or at least move him around more. Might be better able to take advantage of his skills at LB.
Good news is that the Big Ten refs will be nowhere near this game so we might actually see some holding penalties.

Has anyone here watched any SMU football this year? How do we match up?

I feel like we started clicking when we focused on running the ball vs the silly gimmicky stuff. Curious how their run D looks on tape.

This is a double-edged sword.

We got a VERY favorable road in the playoffs. We draw one of the weakest opponents for a first round home game, and if we beat them, we get the Group of 5 representative.

Wow. Hard to complain about that.

BUT... if we lose in the first two rounds, we're gonna look like chumps, and oh, the criticism of our program is going to rain down like flaming arrows!

Diaz coached and aggressive blitz package style, and he had an elite secondary. Allen isn't nearly as aggressive, and he has less overall talent this year.

Diaz is definitely a superior assistant, but that's exactly why he's not there anymore.

The irony here is that we finished #4 in the committee’s final rankings in the very year they expanded the playoff to 12 teams. After all of those seasons of getting into the New Years Six but falling just short of the four-team playoff, it is when the playoff expands that we finally finish in the top four.

Quiz question

SMU suffered the Death Penalty in the 1980s. One SMU football player transferred to PSU.

Does anyone remember who that is?

The difference between this season and those others where we just missed, is not losing that second game to an "ok" team.

2016: Pitt
2017: Michigan State
2019: Minnesota

Held on to beat USC/Minnesota this year. Call it progress.

Dude, I have been banging on that drum for a few years. Glad someone else finally gets it. It's the 2nd loss that has hurt CJF more than anything else.

Everyone is forgetting, it’s not the second loss, it’s the 3rd. We’re here right now cause we didn’t play Michigan
