Rip Engle also had to teach phys ed classes. Imagine a head football coach doing that today.

And I bet Rip and Joe would both tell you that Franklin’s job in the current college sports environment is much more difficult than theirs was.

His best record was 1 loss in the regular season in 1962. That is better than any Franklin team so far. Just sayin.

Coach Engle was a Gem of a Person. Good Friend of my Parents. I have a photograph when I was a little kid from Cape Cod when I was ready to climb aboard his sailboat. Such a Class Act of a Man.
I think a dose or two of perspective is a healthy thing for sure.
Rip Engle’s winning percentage was .654, and I believe James Franklin’s currently stands at .709.
And while the current 8-game losing streak against OSU is painful to say the least, let us not forget that Joe once lost 9 straight to Michigan.
James Franklin has his shortcomings, and there are certainly hurdles that we’re all anxious to see the program get over. But it’s not as if we’re experiencing anything unprecedented right now.
Engle wasn’t paid 10 million dollars a year either.

And one of those was a 27-0 win against the #2 ranked Buckeyes. Also of note is that he was operating under a self imposed scholarship limit agreement with Pitt, WVU and, I think, Syracuse. I don't believe The Big Ten schools had any such agreement. And those restrictions carried well into Joe's tenure.
As always, I can count on you to remember those days of Penn State football.
The 27-0 game was Gary Klingensmith’s finest hour. EDIT: it was actually the 1963 10-7 game for which Klingensmith is best remembered.
Bob Torrey is another Penn Stater who is remembered for one great game. Nine carries for 107 yards in the 1977 Arizona State Fiesta Bowl. Torrey was a hell of a basketball player too.

27-0 was 1964. Unfortunately I have not been able to find Klingensmith’s statistics for this game. Much obliged to anyone who can somehow ferret them out.
Klingensmith’s big game came in 1963, PSU beat OSU 10-7. OSU was #5.
