Is there a connection with VT?
Not a direct one, but Robie is from PA (from Erie) and has been around PA recruiting a long time. Bassett knows a few VT wrestlers -- at least Church, Seidel, and Gaj.

Beyond that ... Henson, Hipolito, Torres, Gaj, and Church make for a really good set of workout partners in his weight range. IIRC Andonian and Lewis stuck around to train at the RTC. Plus Frayer, Tanelli, and Haught on staff. It's a good setup.

I will not be all that upset if he goes to Okie State, let DT deal with his lunatic father and uncle.
Do people really think that all PSU parents are a bunch of shrinking violets?

That's not a good reason to want a wrestler to go elsewhere. It's Cael Freaking Sanderson. They fall in line.

If it's not Penn State, I'd much rather that he goes to Oklahoma State than to Iowa.
Its hard to tell if any one recruit can elicit a program changing shift, but Bassett to Ok. St. I think has the potential to have the "DT" effect there. I am not sure that is preferable over him going to Iowa.

Be careful what you wish for there.

Taylor is showing that he can develop wrestlers including undoing previous bad habits -- for example, Cam Amine has a career high bonus rate this year.

He has a big stable of returning and incoming talent, just landed Dreshaun Ross (#3 in 2026), and could land both Bassett and Forrest.

We still have Cael, so not THAT worried, but Taylor is a bigger threat than Brands.

Though maybe the worst of all worlds is Slumlord Bob poaching the talent Taylor developed.

Top 3 choices for Bassett would have been

1- PSU
2- Bloom
3- Lehigh

I hope I am wrong I think it's all Okie State. Stinks but I trust the guy running PSU's program

This. I think the Brands know only one way…and when that way craps the bed it’s off to the portal in a BIG way. Did we hit the portal? Yes technically, but in a complementary way for 2 guys who ended up long time starters who will have 4 years of hardware…AND fit in here. Same with Max Dean. He fit. I can see Iowa having more portal guys. They almost seem to be transitioning from developers to pro GM model.

That's fair, but I have known them for 90% of my life they are just not good people, so like I said it will not upset me to see them go somewhere else.

Anyone know what time he is announcing I believe it's on Flo? I haven't been able to see a time yet.

Do you think it could be potentially another Soriano situation?

The father recruited a bunch of kids to Bishop McCourt and the PIAA banned them from states as a result. Last year was the first year they were eligible.

I searched for an actual time and didn't see an announcement time. I hope we get the kid but this is starting to get ridiculous with all the drama and build up. I'm not sure what he stands to gain by all this.

PS This is the type of stuff someone would do to bring attention to a program trying to get back in the spotlight like OSU. This doesn't feel like a PSU commitment. PSU doesn't need these dramatics. I'm predicting OSU but I hope I'm wrong.

They gutted the Forest Hills wrestling program because they didn't get their way.
That's not accurate.

There was a racial incident at King of the Mountain, where a white Forest Hills kid slurred Erik Gibson. It was handled poorly by everyone involved (including the families).

As a result, months later Gibsom's parents pulled him from Forest Hills.

Gibson and Bassett are cousins.

The McCort job happened to be open, and Bill Bassett was available. What happened next wasn't rocket science.

Then Bill Bassett turned his basement mat room into a youth club and used it to recruit both locally and out-of-state (Forrest and Sledzianowski).

And how schools that recruit kids from out of state in any sport are still allowed to compete in the PIAA is beyond me.

Ha! He wrestled my best friend's son tonight. They've faced off a lot over the past few years with results as you'd expect.

That's a shocker. Guess Spencer was the reason because there's nothing else that would be an attraction. Can't argue with the choice individually, but he'll be just another Lee in the sense his team won't do anything.

Well regardless of reason could also be about schmoozing the parents or the DAD in this case..... from anecdotal evidence posted here..........I bet Cael doesnt schmooze and they can take their act elsewhere...good luck to them

moving on to the kids that want to be here

I’m pretty surprised it wasn’t Okla St. To be honest he never seemed super warm to PSU for some reason…if he wants to rebuild a legacy this certainly isn’t the place to do that. Iowa and Brands track record of developing elite level wrestlers (meaning multiple NCAA titles and senior world team members) is underwhelming. Outside of Lee who was a generational talent, and didn’t necessarily overachieve expectations it’s limited. DT is still unproven as a head coach but would seem to be the model of who you would to emulate if you were a young wrestler with Olympic aspirations (second to Cael of course).
