The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley remain at an impasse despite both sides wanting to work out a long-term contract.

Midway through last season, the Giants offered Barkley a deal worth $12.5 million and it was rejected. General manager Joe Schoen promised to revisit negotiations early in the offseason and remained true to his word.

Prior to placing the franchise tag on his superstar running back, Schoen offered Barkley and his camp a deal worth $13 million and again it was rejected.

Bob Brookover of NJ Advance Media now reports that the Giants attempted to sweeten the pot, offering Barkley that $13 million deal with $1 million in additional incentives bringing the total possible contract to $14 million.

It didn’t move the needle.

The Giants, according to sources, offered Barkley a multi-year deal worth $12.5 million a season at the bye week, then increased that number to $13 million with a chance to get to $14 million in incentives shortly after the season.
Barkley rejected both deals. He and his agent Kim Miale obviously overestimated the running-back market. They could argue that Barkley doesn’t know his true value because he was blocked from testing the free-agent market after the Giants used the franchise tag on him.
Barkley and his camp reportedly remain firm on their $16 million ask, which would make him the highest-paid running back in the league alongside Christian McCaffrey, who has an AAV of $16.02 million.

At $14 million, assuming he maxed out his incentives, Barkley would have been the third-highest-paid running back in football behind the aforementioned McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints ($15 million AAV).

The Giants have until July 17 to work out a long-term deal or Barkley will be stuck playing on the franchise tender for $10.1 million, which is $3.9 million less than he could have potentially earned on the now-rejected deal.

So basically the Giants don’t have to do anything other than wait for July 17th and then pay him just $10.1 MM. This could backfire on Saquon. Of course, this could also be bad for morale on a team building as a real playoff contender.

I guess it depends on how secure they feel about him repeating 2022 rather than 2021

He doesn’t have to play for the franchise tender either. As of today he hasn’t signed that either. His agent should know what other teams would pay. He won’t get it in 2023 but 2024 he could average more than if he stays.

Huh? If he doesn’t play in 2023 it doesn’t count as a yr. We know what other teams will pay, nobody would offer what the Giants offered

He’ll 7-8 million for 2023 if says he wants out of NY. Is it less than he could have made obviously. But if he wants 16m and NY says weren’t going there. He hast to make a decision.
How do you know no other team won’t offer more? Weird things happen all the time. Most teams wouldn’t have gave a below average quarterback like Jones that contract either.

If he takes the franchise tender offer what happens for 2024? Can they franchise tag him again or is he a free agent?

What is absent from the article (s) is how much money is guaranteed. My guess is that's the rub.
The guaranteed money and structure was reported as the reasons why his camp did not like the last offer in one of the articles earlier this week.

how would he know? that would be tempering. Without the Giants permission, they can't talk to anyone. Anyone who is paying attention would know Miles Sanders got the best contract of any RB this off season, other than of course the guys that signed their tender offer.

Barkley's tag is non-exclusive, which means he can negotiate with other teams.

That money i like generational wealth - of course no one is hammering me when I run with a ball so what do I know what he should get paid.

Years 2 and 3 get quite lucrative for the player, I believe. Year 3 especially.
Year two is 120% of year one. Year three is 144% of year two, which translates to $17.25mm (unless the market for running backs takes off, in which case other aspects of the formula come into play). Doubt that it does that far.

Well whether you are aware of how business work. Lot’s of things happen that could be considered tampering or insider trading and yes even bribery. All these things happen every day. No multimillion dollar deal happens without one of the 3.

Agents get paid for a reason and the best ones have the information. Why do you think Saquon hasn’t signed yet? I’m an Eagles fan, Miles is a nice back but he’s not unique. I don’t care if Saquon signs with NY or if he goes somewhere else. NY stunk with him and they’ll stink without him. I just want to get the money he deserves. Miles got the max for his abilities.

Well as the Reaper pointed out he’s free to negotiate with who ever he wants. That said RBs don’t get paid like that any more

No he could sit out the season, not get paid and still be subject to Giants’ control next year or, if he doesn’t get a long term deal, play under the tag and leave next year.

What rock were you living under and missed the fact that the Giants made the playoffs and beat the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs last year?

You know how that worked out for Leveon. RB careers are one of if not the shortest in the NFL. One wasted year is big money at that position.

Not a Giants’ fan, but any claim that the Giants stank last year is asinine
We’ll have to disagree on that. In my opinion they beat a Vikings team that was leaking oil for weeks.
Being a Eagles fan for 40+ seasons, there’s nothing I like about the other 3 divisional teams. I do however root for PS players. While I’m happy the Eagles didn’t spend $26M on Miles, I’m glad someone did. Hopefully Saquon gets his money from NY. After they paid average Jones, it will be less they have to spend on good players. Win for Philly

Paying Saquon that much would be a very NYG thing to do! They trotted back three key starters from a 1-4-1 divisional team at way, way more money in 2023.

They added a nice piece in Waller and had some good looking draft picks, but I don’t see them gaining much traction on last year. They have a playoff schedule and the NFC East plays the AFC East and NFC West this year.

Ouch.

Saquon just re-Tweeted this.

Not sure of the significance of the tweet. Full amount of a franchise tag contract is guaranteed. But, there's no guarantee that the Giants would tag Barkley in 2024. All it proves is that Dunleavy can multiply and add. Higher math for employees of The Post.

Yeah ask Le'Veon Bell about that. He got less from the Jet's than what the Steelers offered after sitting out a year -what are these guys thinking?

I would be curious to know how much of the 13 million (assuming 13 mil is guaranteed) is left after Uncle Sam and the agent carve out their piece? I'm guessing just over 8 million per year or 34 million net over the entire contract.
