I find it incredibly sad and in poor taste that people still can’t be thankful for what Cliff did for the program while being happy that he is living his dream of being drafted in the NFL. Why are some of you still reliving nonsense from last season, while STILL being bitter about it. Move on. Get on with your life and look forward to next year.

Clifford is a winner. That really rubs some people the wrong way. He played the game, he was the man in the arena. He put himself out there. That's never fully appreciated from the couch in your family room.

Imagine what Allar might be in for from some of our "elite" PSU fanboys? Remember...."WE DESERVE BETTER."

I just laugh at the “12-0 and a ‘ship or the season is a disappointment” uncle Rico types. I WISH I could live in this mythical binary world that these goobers live in. It would be so much easier than the reality the rest of the world lives in…..

Not really. Unless they wear UGA, Bama, and Clemson hats, on rotation, they haven't been satisfied since 1994.

Coaches, like Paterno (and a million other coaches out there now and throughout history), often default to experience, and the stability and confidence (in the player) that they're going to do what the coaches want them to do and make the fewest mistakes, so the coaches can focus on other things. That doesn't mean that the alternative couldn't have been better, ultimately. Coaches are risk adverse and trying to reduce the "noise." If given the choice between allowing a kid the chance to fail, and a chance to really succeed, or allowing a kid to do what he can reasonably be expected to do at a decently competent level, most coaches (including Paterno and Franklin) will default to the latter, especially when seniority and experience are disparate.
And why do you think most coaches do that? Maybe because that’s the best way to win consistently. Coaches tend to do what works, so they can be successful, and continue to remain employed. I know that’s not a goal for the couch coaches because winning and losing has no impact on their livelihood.

Because it's how they were taught, and if they deviate from the norm and don't completely exceed expectations, the old hens will be cackling and calling for their heads. The minute someone does something out of the ordinary, there's a bunch of traditionalists shouting about "back in my day" and "3 yards and a cloud of dust" and all that nonsense. It's also much easier on them. And easier to control a locker room that way, too.

It's OK, fella. I'm generally fine with it. There is value to experience and familiarity. However, there are times when exceptions should be made and this was one of those times. And if that makes me a "couch coach" ... oh well. It still doesn't mean the better player played, or we would have been worse off in the present if Allar had played.

You got me. It's a very intellectually challenging profession. I couldn't possibly figure it out. Glad we have a guy like marshall23 around to set me straight.
I have no doubt you believe you would revolutionize coaching. I mean how hard can it be?

I couldn't possibly. I'd be flummoxed just trying to figure out what type of ball to use, and keeping all the fancy position names straight (wait, Will is the Mike, and Mike is the Sam, and Sam is the Will!?!?! Can't we just move them around so Will is the Will?) . I don't know how you, and all of the rest of this (and every other) generation's brightest minds, did it.

“Alright, Mark. When you get the ball, just run faster than the defender. And if you get hit, hold onto the ball, stay on your feet, and keep running.”

”The rest of you, block for Mark.”

*****************

”Bill, throw to the open receiver. Be accurate. Right between the numbers.”

*****************

”Defense, shed those blocks and make a tackle.”

*****************

Easy, peasy.

Your last sentence may be the only intelligent words you've ever posted here.

Not far from this was my favorite bit of coaching I ever received after freezing at practice, not sure of who I was supposed to block. “If you don’t know what to do, hit somebody!!!”

That's slightly too complicated for the typical successful HS football coach.

You keep talking about high school football coaches…we’re not talking about high school coaches, we’re talking about D-1 coaches who are at the top of their profession. I’m sure you feel you’re smarter than every high school football coach out there (which you’re not), but it isn’t easy to get to the D-1 level especially at a program like Penn State. You believe they’re all glorified gym teachers, but they’re not even close to that.

I was indirectly referencing a specific high school football coach. It's not all about you, or whatever conversation you feel you're entitled to have. Your last statement has some truth to it ... sometimes they're not glorified.

And let's all remember ... all this immaturity on the part of people like marshall23 and Ludd resulted simply because someone, who supports Franklin and what he's done and is doing here, suggested that maybe he made a mistake.

Maybe he didn't and maybe you're just as guilty of keeping this BS going as those you are accusing? Food for thought. That milk was spilled and cleaned up a while ago. You cannot prove Allar was ready anymore than people can say he wasn't. It's mindless.

Dude ... you have to comprehend what's actually being said. That was my point ... I can't prove Allar was ready anymore than people can say he wasn't. It's my opinion, and I'm fine with it. It's the crazies rushing in here to bash me, or anyone else who would have preferred Allar, as being "couch coaches" and crying that coaching is hard, and we don't know what we're saying, and obviously Allar was the lesser choice because the coach said so (by starting Clifford).

THOSE are the folks you should be chastising. I stated from the get go that I preferred Allar, I'm fine with that, I'm happy for Clifford, and the "you're wrong!" stuff is immaturity. And, yet, here you are, defending the "you're wrong!" folks. Get it together, man.

I'm not a Franklin basher ... I'm not looking to drive him out of town and looking for every and any excuse to criticize him. I support the guy and think he's doing an overall very good job. My deadly sin, apparently, was disagreeing with him in any way, shape or fashion.

So in a thread about Clifford being drafted....it's everyone else. Got it. The rabbit hole this thread went down is idiotic IMO.

Who said this as his initial post in this thread? "I'm happy for Clifford. I wish him nothing but the best. I would have rather have had Levis or Allar at the helm, but I hold no ill will against Clifford, who seems like a good dude and left it all out there for PSU.

Not sure why we need to do the immature thing and battle about this."

You could have ended it after the second sentence and that would have been sufficient. The rest makes you sound like a troll.
