The opening drive of the second half started out great and I think going for the 4th down was the right call there. Sad that the drive fizzled out and we even faced 4th, but had we converted that single 4th down... I think the game would have turned into a rout with no turning back.
Not punting from our territory in the third quarter when we had the game in a very manageable multi-score margin enlivened them and facilitated their comeback. We made their job much easier. The error there was self-evident within minutes after it was made.

Beating a dead horse here, but yeah... going 2 for 5 on 4th down and giving them the ball on our side of the field nearly cost us this game. Frankly, it should have cost us the game, but the offense fought on.

We expect our players to learn. We should expect the same of our coaches. Beamer: CUT IT OUT.

Prior to the game, I posted something along the lines of if we don't help Mizzou with dumb personal foul penalties, going for it on our own end of the field, and turning the ball over giving them a short field and we'll be fine. We did all those things and still won. What do I know?

Beamer has priors.

He's a lot like Les Miles that way. Les became "Less" because he never got over it.

Kirby Smart did some squirrelly stuff his first couple of years at Georgia and got over it, which is when the championships started.

Beamer should take a clue.

What you should take from it is that we were as fortunate as the proverbial multi-penis dog.

Yeah, I need to follow your example and stop beating the same drum.

BUT.

I think he will learn. I just hope he doesnā€™t lose the aggressiveness in the process. Understanding the flow of the game, in-game strategies, when to show confidence in the team, clock management, etc. are skills that can be learned with experience.

I thought the first 4th down attempt in the 3rd was the worse of the two. Both were bad, but the first one took points off the board. We had a grinding a drive that could have ended in points and bumped the lead from 15 up to 18. Coupled with our TD to end the first half, that would have been a great to way to end and start halves. Instead, we let them off the hook with very bad call, came away with no points and gave them a shot in the arm. They were noticeably pumped up after that.

Leading up to that 4th down, I think we got a bad spot, though, after Sellers ran out on 3rd down. Looked a lot closer than 4 yards to me. I also think he should have cut inside and run upfield on the 3rd. Seemed like he would have picked it up.

Needs to learn to be strategically aggressive. His aggressive calls in the first half made sense and felt right for the context of the game. The 4th down plays to start the 3rd just made no sense at all.

Very happy about the win, just thought we had learned our lesson to punt the damn ball and play field position. The 4th and 4 one bothered me especially. Gave up 20 yards of field position. Sure, there will be situations where we need to roll the dice, just didnā€™t see the need to gamble field position last night. But absolutely, great response by our team and kudos to Loggains for letting Sellers go wild. Missouri was ready for the run game.
We shoulda known that at the coaching level. The 4th and 4? OK. We score there, game almost over. 4th and 1 on your own 37 (which should've been a 1st down on the previous play) up by 2 scores in Q3? That was absolute dumbarse. Up by 15 at half, you have to play field position in the 2nd half. Especially in the SEC.

I would add that, in the second quarter, on the long drive where we went for it twice and made it twice, but went for it again a third time and didn't come close to making it, we were in easy field goal range, and that was a greedy and potentially harmful decision.

You shorten your odds by going the yardage three times in a drive. Once you get down the field as far as we got, with or without the lead at that point in the game, it's time to take the points when you're inside the 25. By bucking the odds, we came up with nothing. Not good potentially in the grand scheme of things.

Hopefully we flush it and learn from it (coaches... head coach specifically). We won and we should be celebrating from the chandeliers by HOW we won. The players AND coaches overcame those questionable decisions AND Mizzou's best shot (and arguably better coaching). There's a reason they were early season top-10.

Don't misunderstand - I was delighted to win. But I believe analytics have inclined some coaches (hint, hint) not to take the long view on their decision-making. It's not a strength. It's like Russian Roulette - eventually someone's brains are splattered on the wall.

Yes, I forgot about that one. I had the same feeling as we went for it the third time. Just felt like we were tempting fate one too many times. On top of that, it had been a 7+ minute drive. To come up empty on an 18-play, 7 minute drive is agonizing. When you factor in that one plus the first drive in the 3rd quarter, that's 6 points. Would have given us a 21-point lead in the 3rd quarter, which would have felt pretty safe.

Won't accept that we won despite some very spotty coaching. Some knowledgeable fans here and elsewhere have observed this truth and have likewise assented to this point of view.
Anyone who is truly knowledgeable knows that this team is special and the coaches are doing an excellent job with them. To say otherwise is just to be grasping for negativity. Every game is not going to go totally your way. Only a moron would criticize this win.

There were some bad play calls, definitely. But there were also some great ones. It was great coaching and game management to get us 7 points before the half. The final offensive play call to Sanders was a fantastic call and wonderfully executed.

Can't acknowledge the bad calls without conceding there were also very good calls.

I immunized myself from the "moron" label the day I recognized that clinical examination of almost anything exposes flaws. That was a long time ago. Obviously you haven't made it that far.

Should have been 3 additional points in the first half. Play calls have not been my issue. Game management decisions have been my issue.

Well, you checked wrong. The cause was unaided by a couple of key decisions by the head coach. What happened was that players made plays when pushed to the wall by the looming consequences of those decisions - plays that averted a tragic, unnecessary outcome.
It wasnā€™t the coaches fault we couldnā€™t stop the outside zone./stretch play. they had a bum Qb and our defensive coach stayed in a 6 man box. They got in a nub TE set. if we adjusted and widened, they ran the ball inside, if we didnā€™t, they set the edge and ran outside zone. I called 90% of what they were about to run the whole second half. our defensive coaches Have been brilliant this year, but made no adjustment to this. Beamer went for it on 4th because we should be able to get a yard with our OL and a 240 lb QB. Damn yall are dumb

The "should be able to get one yard" argument existed way before now. Greater coaches than ours faced it repeatedly, and in particular situations, they invariably took the points. I haven't questioned anything beyond game management decisions. Those rest with one man.

I see. Itā€™s all on the coaches. The defense played poorly allowing Misery to come back in the second half solely due to Whiteā€™s decisions. Same with the offense. All the missed opportunities were on Loggains. And Beamer just kept pushing them and pushing them against that wall until they could take no more.

Pure nonsense emanating from a defeatist mentalityā€” one who canā€™t stand to see the Gamecocks succeed. Now I know why you went to the game. . . to see your team, Misery, play!
Say what you want, but it doesn't take from the fact this was a pretty poorly coached game. I've taken up for the coaches most of the time, and I can be objective. This wasn't the best of performances from the sideline any way you slice it, it's ugly.

This can't continue to happen, and I don't think it will. I'm just happy other folks stepped up.

and if the players had executed and got the first down, it woulda been the correct call. matter of fact the anylitics would agree with the first 1, 2nd one not so much. but if they had worked we wouldn't be talking about it.

That game never should have come down to the heroics required to win it.
that I agree with, my opinion only, but if we hadn't been hardheaded in the run game and opened it up more on 1st and 2nd down, I believe we coulda scored all day long, until they backed out of the box

That's always the case. I'm an old man that watched in person Bear Bryant, Bobby Dodd, and Vince Dooley coach in these situations. Of course, I watched them on TV also. They all won SEC and national championships by taking points when they were there to be had and by punting from their own territory when ahead to make the other team drive the length of the field and use precious time doing it and most times not being able to do it against a decent defense.

I'll say to you as I said to others, I'm not questioning a single play that was called, though some criticism might be well-founded in the minds of some people. They can have my share of that. My only issue is with two particular game management decisions.

That assessment will not bear comprehensive scrutiny if all of my posts are fairly appraised. In the race to pragmatism, it's evident that the cerebral are going to defeat the visceral every time.

The first drive of the 2nd half is a prime example of this.
We were racing down the field passing the ball and then switched to the running play they were stuffing all night for no good reason. Why šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

That 4th down play on our first drive in the 3rd quarter was from the 34...hardly a guaranteed field goal. That's about a 51 yard kick, which is well past Herrera's career long. Going for it on 4th and 4 made sense.

I think you're thinking of the 4th and 1 play at Missouri's 17 in the 2nd quarter. That one would have been an easy kick for Herrera.
