Sunday complaint: What’s with all the song covers?

I go into coffee shops and restaurants and am bombarded with covers. Most of them suck balls. What’s with all the cover horse-a$$? And who are these clowns covering songs instead of writing their own material? For f*ck’s sake.

Often times, an “artist” can’t win with a cover. Do it the same, and it’s just a big “What’s the f*cking point?” Use artistic license, and you ruin a classic.

Just write your own stuff and leave the originals alone. For f*ck’s sake.

Covers are great in concert. When they’re recorded, you need to make it your own for me to like it. Johnny Cash covering Hurt, for example.

Sitting in a coffee shop now, and they’re playing some funeral dirge version of “Dancing Queen”. Slow, sh|tty, bored voice like, “I don’t really want to sing this.” Say what you want about the original (I like it), but this cover is just terrible.

I play in a cover band. All we play are covers. At the hobby band level no one wants to hear our own songs. Have played in bands that played original material, quickest way to lose the audience. Once a month we play "Live Band Karaoke" at the Red Rooster in Madison WI (if y'all are around stop by) the ultimate cover band experience . A cover band playing while someone else sings the songs cover squared...........

They know you don't like it and just want you to leave. As soon as you leave they play really good original music. 😔

All kidding aside, I’ve heard many great covers, both recorded and live. Live haven’t all been by household names. There are definitely good covers out there. Unfortunately, I’ve been barraged with bad covers lately. It’s as though they hate me.

The world has turned upside down with Urbana-Champaign as the epicenter . FFS.

Coffee shops are for coffee. Coffee is for caffeine. Caffeine is to have energy to go do something. Take the hint.

Linda played guitar, and Frank was also a band arranger- both knew music very well.

"I don't consider anyone an artist, except those who write their own songs. And that's the only ones I consider an artist. Just those who write their own songs, and those who play their own instruments. And that's all I consider an artist. I don't consider anyone else an artist. Except those who are band arrangers. Just those who write their own songs, who play their own instruments and who are band arrangers. And that's it. I don't consider anyone else an artist. Except those who know music very well. Just those who write their own lyrics, play their own instruments, those who arrange bands and those who know music very well."

- The Musical Jerk

Oh, and Sinatra didn't arrange his bands/music. That was outsourced.

The issue isn’t simply covers. It’s covers that thoroughly suck and have me wanting to hang myself when I’m trying to enjoy my butterscotch latte. Sleepy, slow, disinterested vocals. Total sh|t pile.

Instead of a sh|t cover, write your own material that fits your style. Or quit because music isn’t for you.

This isn’t complicated.

One man's decent cup of coffee is another woman's butterscotch latte.

If the cover was good enough to make it on some cheesy corporate playlist, maybe enough folks appreciate it, and you should get your double soyboy oatgoat milk half pump caramel drizzle syrup turbo pumpkin cappulattespresso mixed with a recently used, unwashed women's vibrating device somewhere that plays music more in tune with your tastes.

Or maybe they're trying to distract you from accosting any more children.

I love most song covers i enjoy the different takes various artist take on the songs. It’s usually a nice change of pace

No, the quickest way to lose an audience is to invite me to sing.

Were you born a jackass or did you just perfect it over your sorry lifetime? What an absolutely unnecessary personal attack.

Which part was an "absolutely unnecessary personal attack"? Use your words, and don't rely on "all of it," or anything silly like that.

After much consideration, I’ve decided that we should continue this sort of complaining today, Monday. After all, the covers didn’t get better overnight. They still suck balls.

Of course, this is not intended to distract from any other pertinent complaining.

It’s not my battle, but I would bet he was referring to that 55 word sentence/paragraph in the middle of your post.

So, your stance is that a guy whose shtick is drinking lattes and eating scones ... in the rare instances he's not whacking off ... is unnecessarily attacked when his lattes are mocked (even though, again, that's his shtick)? Somebody's got a case of the Mondays ...

My stance? No, not my stance. I was just guessing at what the other poster’s issue might have been. They can feel free to chime back in here and carry on this important discourse with you. You seem fully committed to resolving this. I hope it works out for you.
Happy Monday!!!

So, your stance is that you have no stance, but wanted to make sure you shared your thoughts on what you thought someone else's stance would be, because this issue isn't important enough to have your own stance, but is important enough to guess what someone else's stance might be, even though it's really your stance?

I'm not speaking for him, but yes, except for that last part. But I don't have a take on this issue.
