As good as Mullen is or will be, he is not the guy. If Jeremy Foley hires him, then he has flat out FAILED.

Florida hasn't got the luxury of waiting on the next great head coach to develop. They have just been unseated as the kings of the SEC, a position they feel is their birthright, by a very powerful force in Tuscaloosa. They need to win now. Hiring Mullen would not put them in an instant competitive position like Stoops would.

Unfortunately, the list behind Stoops is short and you could get to Mullen's name pretty quickly.

Even though Foley has hired up and comers for his baseball and (almost) basketball (See Grant) I don't think he can afford to make the same waiting game in Football.

Mullen should get a nice raise out of this, though.

All joking aside, you make a very strong point. They need to make a statement with their hire. Their loss to Bama was like the Crown being taken from the king. They want it back now and they do not have the great one (Tebow) coming back next season.

It all depends on what Foley and the "Bull Gators" think about Mullen. For MSU ,whatever is gonna happen needs to happen quick.

and therein lies why so many of us are scared right now. 5-7 WAS a miracle with the crap that the walrus left. 5-7 to the average visor/jort/mullet wearing UF sidewalk alum is turrible. They have no concept what we endured during the five years of the Croom Error because, well, they were too busy winning BCS championships.

They can get anyone if they want them, proven head coaches, very good ones. Probably the only people who would not take the offer are Saban, Carroll, Bob Stoops and Mack Brown and some of the dinosaurs. That is it, anyone else would go. You only have to travel a few hundred miles to recruit national champ caliber players.

I wonder how much influence Meyer will have in the decision. Meyer's statement talked about being a part of the program and he has a lot of respect for Mullen.; especially after the drop in production of his offense this year without Mullen. In all honesty Mullen hasn't shown enough yet to get this hire. I don't believe Saban can be pulled away from the evil empire. Bama would match any amount to keep him. However I am of the belief that Florida is the best job in the SEC. Harbaugh has shown a lot at Stanford and Stoops was at Florida before he took over Oklahoma.

Saban ain't going to Florida, not happening.

I don't think the relationship between Mullen and Meyer is as sweet as everyone thinks.

Stoops I can see because of what you stated, he has been at UF before and he is successful.

My first thoughts were:

Whittingham
Chip Kelly
Harbaugh
Butch Davis

in no particular order. Then the guys who had already been there.

But an outsider looks at MSU and says Mullen barely did better than Croom did. Just sayin.

That said, UF knows Mullen very well and I still think they offer him and he accepts.

Like the original poster, I think its crazy talk to mention Mullen for the job when they can pay anything they want for a proven coach. If everything works out for Mullen here, I will be a shitload more nervous when Florida has their next coaching search.

I don't see Stoops leaving OK but Peterson and Patterson both make sense. Part of me is leaning towards Butch Davis though.

That is exactly my point. The average outsider thought Crooms was doing a great job and had "cleaned up the program". The last year of the Croom Error brought us a 4-8 season. Mullen went 5-7. Biggest differences in the two seasons were:
1) Mullen had less talent in 2009 vs 2008. 2) Mullen had us competitive in every game except AU and Alabama. Croom, not so much. 3) 2009 brought a much harder schedule.
Any rational MSU fan could see this and appreciate Mullen for what he accomplished this year. Much more than what an outsider can appreciate.

According to many UF fans, they could care less that Mullen left. Also, Mullen is several years younger than Stoops, Whittingham, PetersEn and Patterson and those four have had much better seasons than a single 5-7 season. Also, they have more overall coaching and head coaching experience. For those reasons, I think UF picks one of them.

The only thing that has me worried is if Meyer is the one that they give final say so in naming his successor.
