Mistake to go for 2 at the end of the half. Chasing points and lost momentum. Mistake to go for 2 down 9. Kick the XP and extend the game. When you miss the 2 point conversion and you're down 2 scores, the game is over.

10 and 2 with losses to OSU and Michigan is the ceiling for Franklin and it will be a matter of time when he is challenged for this program and with expansion on the way 8-4 will be the norm
next two games will actually be a lot harder than most think. at this point 10-2 and NY6 would be great, but not a sure thing.

100% agree with the complaints against CJF. Note also though that we lacked a lot of big play execution. Ball through Warren's hands; ends getting sucked in as Michigan RB's run around the outside for a score; Allar fumbling the ball; etc. All part of the game but all also contributing to end result. Need more stepping up in crunch time.
This loss to Mich is on the head coach. The offense play calling was horrible. Mich had better talent along the lines. Ten and two will be forever the high mark for Franklin
When asked why he went for 2, his response was I thought points would be hard to come by. you sacrificed an easy 1 point for a clueless 2 point try. Bad coachinf
so, he must have thought that Michigan would not score again....that 2 point miss led to the need to go for 2 again....and then the need for 2 score...crazy
Now that the game is over, I have the 4-box going on Youtube TV and I see offenses that pitch the ball around the yard and run slants and posts and QBs who aren't afraid to throw it into tight windows to covered WRs and I think....why can't we do that too?
I didn’t agree with some of the play calls on 4th down, but until the offensive (quarterback or offensive coordinator) are will to attack all parts of the field this offense can’t put enough points on the board to beat a high end defense. In this game the defense was great again. The offensive line and rushing attack did want they needed to do, but the lack of a threat down the field or over the middle is holding this team back from being something special. There were plays to had over the middle or down field in the 2nd half (even the threat of it to loosen up the defense), but the ultra conservative play calling or execution is hard to watch against top tier teams. What is holding them back lack of confidence in receivers, quarterback too afraid to put the ball at risk, coaches afraid to damage the psyche of their quarterback???? This is a very talented coaching staff and they have put together a very talent roster. They are so close, but can’t seem to get over the hump. I get it it is sooooo frustrating. Keep the passion, but just remember where this program was (as a whole) 10 years ago.

Penn State is 3-16 against AP top-10 opponents under Franklin, including 2-7 when ranked in the top 10 itself. Those aren’t the kinds of facts that inspire confidence for Saturday. Even since the surprise 2016 Big Ten title season, Penn State is a modest 13-18 against AP-ranked teams.
Last I checked, no team hangs banners for keeping games close or for consistently covering the spread. Yes, Penn State has put up respectable showings in many of the star-studded showdowns, but it has also yet to break through and reach an elite level on a consistent basis.
That’s not to say Penn State hasn’t achieved a lot of success during Franklin’s tenure. It has four seasons with at least 10 wins and appearances in four New Year’s Six bowl games. Another double-digit win total and New Year’s Six bid is feasible again regardless of what happens Saturday. But true signature moments — the enthralling field-stormings and dramatic scenes after upending an elite foe — have been few and far between.

I realize in seasons past that PSU has been handicapped with poor lines and depth. That's been addressed and yet they still struggle

PSU is essentially Iowa of the East with a great defense, solid special teams and an anemic/mediocre offense. Though I suspect Ferentz might be able to eke out more from the offense. I don't think Franklin's offense works without a running QB.

Just starting the list for them.
Two games in a row against ranked teams Franklin panics and goes for it on 4th down, despite the fact it’s a one score game, with plenty of time left, and the strength of his team is the defense. Both times the results are failure, with the opponent handed field position and scoring quick touchdowns putting away the games. On top of that he also burned a valuable time out changing his mind about going for it earlier. You have to shake your head seeing this twice in a month.
Oh, and what does he do when a single extra point keeps the game a one score game in the closing minutes? He goes for two! Why? He threw away any chance for a miracle comeback. Stupid. No other word describes it. And what does he do when asked to explain it in the postgame press conference? I’m He gives a stupid answer.
I guess only an experienced high school coach could explain away these failures? Can we find one?

First of all, I have not been a Franklin fan for a while. I feel he is not a 'game day' coach. I think he's been able to get the players to compete, but cannot think/adjust during the heat of battle.
The above exchange is an illustration of how his logic is illogical.
I'll take this space to add that I thought Manny, who I do like, didn't seem to have been ready for UM's offensive line scheme of 8-9 wide bodied guys shoulder-to-shoulder. If you can see the replay of the long-run early (44 yds) by Corum, watch how the D on the side Corum took was easily caught inside and pinched from making a play at the line of scrimmage, or to contain. This was one play but were our guys really ready to defend 44 runs and only 8 passes? Adjustments were made but that one play was almost 20% of UM's rush yards and yielded a TD. That TD and the TD after the hairbrain go for it on 4th down....well...you know how to do the math.

EDIT to above: I found a video of the play and now am suspicious that the PS player (#0 DeLuca) may have had his jersey inadvertently caught in the hand of the defender as in one frame he looks to be in position and in the next he moves towards the defender, instead of in the direction of Corum.
