Can't get the agenda for the Committee on Finance, Business, and Capital Planning meeting. Wonder if the trustees, other than the select few, can.

Did they at least give you details and a time to analyze and ask questions before voting on any of these projects?

Well, that's illuminating. I go back to an earlier comment I made in re Beaver Stadium. How much background material have you seen? What are they presenting? I'd be reluctant to approve $70mm for Phase I without seeing the entire ball of wax, how much it will cost, how it will be financed, timeline for completion, etc. Who is going to oversee this project? To the best of my knowledge PSU doesn't have anyone currently on staff who has dealt with a project of this magnitude.

Pat Kraft said there were 19 studies completed on Beaver Stadium during Sandy’s tenure that went nowhere. So all this isn’t for a lack of info…… They probably don’t have anyone on staff who’s dealt with a project like this because much needed improvements to Beaver Stadium and other facilities have been flat out neglected for years. Time to get the ball rolling.

Whatever. So how the fu@k are they paying for it? And when someone asks me to approve the expenditure of God-knows how much money, I'd want more than a couple of days to look the proposal over.

BTW, I think Kraft is intentionally exaggerating the number of studies: that's 2-1/2 a year. Either that, or he has quite the collection of table napkins.

They don’t care how long they give the alumni elected trustees to review anything…they don’t have the votes to do anything about anything.

It's not only alumni-elected trustees. All members of the Board have fiduciary responsibility. I'm assuming that they all get the same material at the same time, with sufficient time for review. If not, something is dreadfully wrong.

My assumption is the senior decision makers meet on the side and discuss how they’re going to vote and then do it with or without anyone else. And that they have everything in advance. That to me
Would be less surprising than everyone getting everything at the same time only days in advance of the vote…

If that's what happens, then the entire PSU senior administration, from Bendapudi on down, ought to be fired.

They’re going to take out loans and then the revenue from the new luxury box/event space on the West side, as well as the new TV contract, ticket prices, donations etc. will help pay for it. It was all in Nate’s article.

This week will not be the first time the trustees see these proposals. It’s basically a final stamp on what has been a very long process.

If these renovations were done 6 years ago when it was initially proposed, they would have been significantly cheaper. Instead, we’re getting less renovations for about double the price… all because of the incompetence/cheap assery of the Baron/Sandy etc administration

As God is my witness, I am about to defend both Frau Barren and Sandy - they were busy paying off all the "NCAA" fines, "Big 10" fines, and "victims" that the bot mandated they pay, which just so happens to be half the price of this new renovation.

Incorporating revenue from the new media rights deals to justify expenditures on the stadium is lousy finance.

The Bengals must have one now, as there's a name on the stadium last time I was down there (last weekend).

It's now Paycor Stadium as of August 2022.

Good topic for discussion, except you're citing the wrong data. The most lucrative naming rights deal for a college stadium is $4.7mm p.a. that United Airlines is paying USC for the Coliseum. Alaska Air is paying UDub $4.1mm for the naming rights to Husky Stadium. After that the amounts drop to half.

What could PSU command? Hard to say. The USC and UDub deals were struck a while ago, but those venues are in large urban areas. Recent deals are smaller, but there are no apple-to-apples comparisons.

Here again, does PSU need to build a brand, spanking new stadium to sell naming rights?-

No. And the money made from naming rights can possibly be used as seed money for grants for the upgrades.

No. And the money made from naming rights can possibly be used as seed money for grants for the upgrades.
Exactly. So why isn't PSU doing it now? Isn't revenue maximization an objective?

Nobody turns away cash, but it's not justification for expenditure.

Bingo.

As reasonable people generally are aware, preferred expenditures (in just about any venue - from governments to businesses) are often "justified" by citing increased revenues that are completely independent of the expenditure involved, cost savings that could have been realized at any time - and citing benefits that could have been achieved regardless of the status of the project.
Those types of things that tend to be ballyhooed in press releases - and rarely are rationally critiqued.

C'est la vie.

Because they are afraid of the blowback that it would cause with the old school folks that want no changes for sentimental reasons?
Is that why Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Michigan State etc etc etc don't do it?
Who knew?

(FWIW: If there was a giant pot of gold at the end of that rainbow, I would be the first one to back "naming" the stadium something other than, or in addition to, "Beaver Stadium")

PSU needs upgrades for a possible home playoff game in the not so distant future.
Thought that "winterizing" was included in the $7Omm first installment.

Those playoff games won't be the financial windfall many might think.

As I posted above, it's professional football now so it should be treated as such. I know I'm in the minority but the longer it takes to realize this the longer it's going to be to keep up. Get ahead of the schools named above. Be a leader not a follower.

Maybe some schools don't think they need that additional mil and change to have their football venue called something like "SHI Stadium."

Actually, they don't (not to that degree, and not for that reason), but that won't stop the hysteria train. Because? "Playoffs"
