Thunder & Lightning: What Happens If Mississippi State Retains Coleman Hutzler?

Mississippi State’s defense continues to languish at the bottom of the SEC and near the bottom of the nation. Most Bulldog fans are expecting a change on the staff, namely a new defensive coordinator, come season’s end, but what if Coach Jeff Lebby decides that isn’t the path he wants to take? Brian Hadad and Robbie Faulk discuss the odds that Coleman Hutlzer is back on the sidelines in 2025.

Hutzler is fine. We don’t have many SEC level defensive players on defense. If Nick Saban was our defensive coordinator we’d still be awful right now.
Nick Saban wouldn’t have Issac Smith Covering Squirrel White 1 on 1.
Hutzler was supposedly hired because of his recruiting prowess, but that doesn’t appear to be reality. It was pretty telling that not one of his players at BAMA wanted to follow him to MSU even with Saban retiring.

If that happens, Lebby puts himself on the hotseat next season. Any talk of this being YEAR ZERO goes out the window. If Hutzler was killing it on the recruiting trail, I'd say maybe we keep him and let him grow into the position, but he and his staff have done nothing but take Ls in recruiting. He's gotta go. You can give Lebby a mulligan for hiring someone who wasn't ready, but now that we have a clear data set that shows how bad the hire was, keeping him is just being stubborn - that's a killer for a first time head coach.

So you think any decent player on bama would come to us right now?

This one’s simple for me.

Exactly. Lebby is the one being paid to make these types of decisions, so if he wants to keep Hutzler, that’s his choice.

That said, considering all the evidence pointing towards Hutzler being a terrible DC and a marginal recruiter at best, it’s Lebby’s a$$ next year if he chooses to keep him

To echo other's comments... That was arguably the most depressing T&L I've listened to. I had to listen to another podcast as y'all went to break. Couldn't even finish.

Dang...

We don’t have many sec level players and Hutzler is 100 % not fine and is not going to be able to recruit out of the talent issue because players know he doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s doing.

You can bet the mortgage Nick Saban, or most any experienced defensive coordinator, would have those players better prepared & in the right positions to make plays. There’s a reason he’s a career special teams coach. And it’s not because he’s a good defensive coach.

I'm just glad Hadad will let Stone start for us next year. He is only #3 in tackles in the SEC

I've known awhile now Hutzler hasn't a clue. If Lebby keeps him, either he just can't find anyone to take the position, or he hasn't a clue either.

Lebby may not be taking the D side as seriously as he needs.

First off, lots of folks on here have been bitching for him to play man and go balls to the wall especially since we can’t get a natural pass rush or stop the run. Secondly, if Smith is supposedly all that, then sometimes you got to show up and prove it. Third, recruiting prowess is no more. Rather it’s who can pay the most. Fourth and finally, why would any Bama players give up money to follow Hutzler to a place that won’t pay them as much and isn’t as good. This makes no sense.

We had four defenders in position to get the stop there, and none of them could make the tackle. That’s somehow Coleman Hutzler’s fault 😂. Ok.

I agree with this, mostly. For sure it takes the right incentive (read: biggest bag of Juicy Jumbos you can muster), but you also have to be able to identify a player that will deliver a high ROI. Look no further than DJ Uiagalelei as an example where money didn't buy the right player.

Didn’t we pay Blake Shapen? How much? Are we still paying him? Did he deliver a high ROI?
With regards to defense, who are we paying the most? Isaac Smith? But only for his zone coverage lol?

Did we really hire Hutzler for recruiting? If so that might be the stupidest decision, in a long line of many, that has been made since Leach's death. I mean, it's Alabama with Saban. No player came to Bama because of Coleman freaking Hutzler.

This is what happens when you hire a guy that has been a special teams coach most of his career. What could go wrong?
There was a 30 second segment where Robbie talked about how he wasn’t convinced that Hutzler would never be a good DC, and I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, but the whole thing was depressing.

His point was that he thinks Hutzler can learn some things along the way and find ways to get better, but I guess I still just can’t believe that Lebby thought that hiring a ST coach would be best for the program. A drooling toddler might be president one day, but that kid isn’t going to be able to help you around the house today, and we needed a DC that was ready to hit the ground running from day 1

Correct. And those 2024 losses Mississippi State fans were willing to put on Hutzler and the defense go directly to Lebby.

You are aware that Isaac Smith is a safety right? In no scenario should you put a safety 1 on 1 in man on one of the fastest receivers on the other team. If you want to put a safety 1 on 1 with someone put them on a TE.

It was 4th down, locking up man was fine there. Squirl was in the wide slot, and Nico made the right read there and squirl made a play. Our big time safety who had 20 tackles did not make the play. Not to mention the guy coming across the middle was wide open for the first down as well. So what wouod you have done there, move smith out of the middle and leave thst lane wide open to run through? The fact is that Tennessee has great players all over the field. Sometimes you have to take chances and hope that your big time guys will make the play. You do realize that don’t you?

Yea well everyone serious enough to buy really good players has money, so they get to decide between a guy who doesn't know what he's doing at a school that has money or a guy that does know what he's doing that has money. Spoiler alert, they are going to go with the one who has proven he knows how to run a defense. Our defensive recruiting for this cycle is not good and if Hutzler is retained it will remain that way. This isn't rocket science.
