Only #5? If he was a biological woman, he would be #1.

LOL I Saw him pick up an onside kick to seal a win vs Army.
I'm so old I was with some HS coaches at spring practice as Franco and Lydell prepped for their senior seasons.
Damn, you have seen the Glory yrs and beyond, you are a good man to ask then, who is the best RB you have ever seen at PSU? I've always thought Warner was the best all-around back I've ever seen, but obviously didn't See Lenny, Lydell etc.. at PSU

IMO...its Carter but at his peak Larry Johnson was right there. If I had to draft just one in the NFL it would be Mitchell. I think his skills would resonate even today.

Clearly more versatile. NFL will like the potential. As for comparisons to Kwalik and Brady...different position in modern football.
I will give you that the game was different.... but many teams utilized the TE more than Joe....for example 1985 Oklahoma used Keith Jackson (their TE) for ball control and even score on a long pass shortly after Isom went out if I remember correctly.
Different coaching different scheme different recruited talent

Perhaps. But for the most part a TE was viewed as a slightly more nimble and athletic 3rd tackle. The off tackle double team and man block on the DE and or OLB were priorities. My recollection is that the advent of the triple option and Houston Veer freed the position to explore new uses.

I believe I would agree with that.....although the guy I loved was Aaron Harris....he was a tank with the ball...not an old Sherman tank he could run! I get amazed at times when people only talk about other schools be RBU.....PSU has a plethora of great backs over the years. I feel the GOAT for RB was Gayle Sayers and Lydell had that type of talent.

My first PSU coaches clinic was spring of 1971. I recall a hospitality event after the Saturday clinic and I believe it was in a Catholic Church social hall. Beer flowed and Joe was earning his chops going table to table eager to make friends. My last spring visit was 2011. I had breakfast down town and read an article in the Patriot that revealed that Jerry was being investigated for child abuse. I shrugged it off as the price of working with at risk kids. I then went to Holuba and met my coach (Joe Sarra). He introduced me to George Chaump who was visiting as well. Soon JoePa strolled over to join the conversation. I backed away as I felt unworthy of being a part of this conversation among legends. It was the last time I saw both Joe’s alive. They took the Statue down on my birthday 7/22/2012. The next day I traveled to State College to pay my final respects to Coach Sarra. I've never gone back.

Tyler Warren is the most versatile player at Penn State since Michael Robinson and Dennis Onkotz.

I've been watching football since i was a young boy in the mid sixties, i've never seen the center on
a play receive the TD pass. The amount of intelligence it takes for the knowledge and awareness at
all these positions is astounding.

No disrespect to Warner, Barkley, Cappelletti, but that was the greatest individual performance i've
ever seen from a Penn State player.
I remember Larry Johnson taking over a game or 2 where he seemed totally unstoppable. Warren is a hell of a football player

I watched Kwalick all four years. Warren is the best TE in CFB right now. Kwalick was the best “then”. Let’s just leave it there. Different eras, different offensive philosophy.

One play that PSU ran with Kwalick that I doubt we’ll see for Warren. We ran an “inside end around”. It’s similar to today’s “shovel pass”. However, it was an inside trap play where the QB handed the ball to Kwalick and Kwalick followed the trapping guard (maybe Bob Holuba or Tom Jackson) thru the hole in the middle. Generally good for 5-10 yards. Ran it numerous times during the year.

I remember the onside kick return but don’t remember Kwalick punting. I remember Bob Campbell, Tom Cherry and Bob Parsons (another QB turned TE) punting in those years.

One thing I am certain about; Kwalick never centered a ball to a “shotgun” QB, then ran a post pattern and out jumped a DB for the ball!!!😂

LJ jr.'s Only hurdle to greatness was LJjr.
I’ve posted before, if LJ Jr. hadn’t been in Joes doghouse for his first few year, he’d definitely be in the discussion for best. Physically strong, very fast. Jimmy Brown type.

However when you have Moore, Warner, Carter, Cappy, Mitchell, plus about 10 more to compare, some with exceptional lines others with average guys, it’s hard to pick number 1. But, I’d go Carter.

I would say if you put Barkley in place of Carter, behind the ‘94 line, with the rest of that offensive crew, he may have run away with the Heisman.

Just as an FYI, Kwalick finished FOURTH in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1968 behind O.J. Simpson, Leroy Keyes and Terry Hanratty.
Sorry for my ignorance, but was he considered unanimously "the best" offensive player on the team? It's impressive to think that a Tight End would be Numero uno...I never would have thought it could happen. I regret not seeing him play.

Barkley at Iowa is my #1. This would be #2 IMHO.

The PSU offense in ‘68 was good but not overwhelming (like ‘94). Chuck Burkett was QB. Very smart but not a great runner or thrower. Bob Campbell (soup) was the main runner. Good, dependable but probably not a top 25 PSU back of all time. We didn’t throw often…three yards and a cloud of dust! We had Charlie Pittman but I think he had a bum ankle.

However, the defense was exceptional with guys like Reid, Smear, Ebersole, Ham, Johnston, Smith, Onkontz. They held opponents to about 11 points per game. And they scored several TDs, blocked kicks, interceptions, recovered fumbles, etc. Gave the offense short fields.

The offense did score a lot of points against some bad Pitt, MD, BC teams. We beat a good Miami team and Kansas in the Orange Bowl. But the overall weak schedule and our buddies at Ohio State kept us out of #1!☹️

fun fact…home attendance was less than 50,000.

Cappy vs. NC State, Shelly Hammond vs. BC, Enis vs. Ohio State, Carter vs. Minnesota, LJ Jr. vs. MSU -- trying to think of comparable games where one PSU player dominated. I think Warren's performance is the greatest performance. I agree.

hell if Joe would have allowed Carter to play more snaps in those big blowouts he would have run away with the Heisman

not complaining, Joe was not into stat padding like a lot of coaches were and still are, similar to Singleton and Allen sharing carries under Franklin it is nice not to wear all the tread off of the tires

Enis against USC in the Meadowlands.

A few hours before an Ohio State @ Penn State Whiteout night game, I'm walking by Shields Building with three cartons of ice cream with dry ice to take to my car to put in a cooler and I hear, "Hey, how good is Saquon Barkley?" Not thinking that I was being spoken to amongst the people walking on the street I ignored it.

Then again, I heard, "Hey, how good is Saquon Barkley?" I turn and look and see three large Ohio State fans looking at me and then realized they were speaking to me. I said, "He's on his way to perhaps being Penn State's greatest running back ever."

The large Buckeye fan then says to me as we were walking, "How good was Curtis Enis?" I said, "He was great. A man amongst boys out there. He ran for around 250 yards against USC in the Kickoff Classic in the Meadowlands. Great running back." Then out from behind these offensive line-sized Buckeye fans popped none other than Curtis Enis.

I said to him, "What are you doing with these guys?" He said, "I know and work with these guys," and then remembered Curtis was from Ohio.

I was in my late 20s and would tell people at every opportunity "Curtis Enis is a BULL!" whether they cared about Penn State football or not, those are some good memories

Everyone’s talking about the TD where he snapped the ball. Media are going to highlight the #3 team in the country coming back from down 14, and in every one of these recaps Warren is displayed front and center. Yesterday he was truly a human highlight film. People see those highlights and then learn about his record-tying 17 catches. He’s probably the best known TE in America right now.

I’d love to see the tv ratings for this game. Lots of eyeballs, surely.
Warren is Associated Press POW.

Just a point how athletic these guys are, Cappy and Mike Guman played Defensive back.
Along with many other position switches that i vaguely remember, only because the only
way of finding out was in print or seeing it suddenly in a game.

Tyler Warren's patience of waiting his turn not only drastically helps the team
and his NFL stock, but shows the portal in most cases is not always the answer.

Tyler Warren surpassing Ted Kwalick, Kyle Brady, Mike Gesicki, Pat Freiermuth, etc., as Penn State's greatest all-time TE?
IMO that was the greatest single game performance by a TE in PSU history. I think he has to sustain a high level of performance for the rest of the year before he can be called PSU's all time best.

I think that his snapping has been a little high ;)
And his first step after the snap was weak. P!$$-poor coaching on that. Fire Franklin! Do I need an emoji, or can yinz and youse read between the lines?
