Didn't know that the woman who falsely accused the lacrosse players ended up going to jail for murder in 2013.
One of the early and notable "Run With It Now - Investigate Later Stories" and journalism has continued down the same rabbit hole ever since.
What happened to teaching this in journalism school:
The Journalist's Creed
- I believe in the profession of journalism.
- I believe that the public journal is a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust.
- I believe that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental to good journalism.
- I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart to be true.
- I believe that suppression of the news, for any consideration other than the welfare of society, is indefensible.
- I believe that no one should write as a journalist what he would not say as a gentleman; that bribery by one’s own pocketbook is as much to be avoided as bribery by the pocketbook of another; that individual responsibility may not be escaped by pleading another’s instructions or another’s dividends.
- I believe that advertising, news and editorial columns should alike serve the best interests of readers; that a single standard of helpful truth and cleanness should prevail for all; that the supreme test of good journalism is the measure of its public service.
- I believe that the journalism which succeeds best — and best deserves success — fears God and honors Man; is stoutly independent, unmoved by pride of opinion or greed of power, constructive, tolerant but never careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful of its readers but always unafraid, is quickly indignant at injustice; is unswayed by the appeal of privilege or the clamor of the mob; seeks to give every man a chance and, as far as law and honest wage and recognition of human brotherhood can make it so, an equal chance; is profoundly patriotic while sincerely promoting international good will and cementing world-comradeship; is a journalism of humanity, of and for today’s world.
The journalists were terrible.
What's disturbing is how they just moved on, and continued to do the same in the next situation, and the next situation.
However, if there is a time to run such a story, now would be it. I think it should be run every year as a reminder. Those players are lucky the accusation didn't come about 10 years later. They'd have been strung up without any due process.
This is the textbook example of why you can't just believe someone because they're really emotional.
I'm actually very surprised ESPN is even running that story now.
Same here. Nobody wants to discuss it now.I can remember when this first happened getting railed by some of my friends because I actually believed the players, and not the victim. From the start something just didn't seem right with her story.
Of course, I'm that crazy person that likes to review all sides with an objective mind before I take a stance. (Or at least I try to.)
Not one single "damn you were right" from them after all was said and done.
Well they all thought I was crazy because I'm a woman and should always believe the woman. I told them numerous times that's not how it works in cases like this. They didn't want to hear it. Duke LaCrosse were the first high profile victims of Cancel Culture before it was "cool".Same here. Nobody wants to discuss it now.

If you read the Journalist's Creed posted above in this thread, it's like they now teach the opposite in Journalism school and give awards for it.Well they all thought I was crazy because I'm a woman and should always believe the woman. Isn't it? I have said over and over again since all this cancel culture crap started that folks need to be careful. The Johnny Depp situation is a great example. JD should own Disney now with the way they treated him. I caught heat for being #TeamJohnny during that trial. Granted, they are both batshit crazy. But she's 100 times worse. It's always amazing to me when people are happily willing to see someone's life destroyed without at least gathering some basic facts first.
Then we get the same thing, in a different vein, with the Smollett story and the same denials and dismissals of the facts.
In all fairness, they aren't wrong that it does happen on college campuses. These guys being exonerated does not change that at all. Sadly it is a reality that we face every day. I think the point is more to stop folks from using this case to say that rape culture doesn't exist on college campuses.Haven't thought about it in a long time, but I'm starting to remember some of the hysteria.
It was too perfect to NOT be true. White boys. Played lacrosse. At Duke. Is there a more stereotypical profile of a spoiled, entitled kid? I mean, how could a rich white kid named Collin Finnerty NOT be guilty of rape?
Sadly, this was the extent of the analysis for most people who wanted to see these boys locked away.
And even though this story was shown to be false beyond any doubt, there are some who still cling to it as speaking to a larger truth about rape culture on college campuses. "Even if it may not have happened in this situation, what this shows us is that it DOES happen."

What should be taken first and foremost from this case is that we must look at the facts of each case individually and not rush to judgment.
Here's the latest update to the rape culture - folks are drugging guy's drinks as well as girl's. Guys need to be just as diligent when it comes to guarding their beverage as chicks.
I can tell you you are wrong there. Most of the rapes occur between Independents. There are a helluva lot more of them than there are Greeks. But go ahead and believe the stereotypes perpetuated by the media. Greeks are simply the easiest target for the media, because everyone already "hates" them. (Unless they need someone for philanthropy. Then we're the best ever.)It does happen. The problem I have is that there have been a number of high profile cases (not as high profile as the Duke case) held up over the past several years where it turns out the girl was lying. Or she consented at the time but withdrew consent later (however that works) and the jury/judge didn't but it. There are just a lot of publicized cases where it's shown not to be true.
If the media wants to strengthen the cause against whatever rape culture they perceive to exist on campuses, they shouldn't rush to judgment to publicize cases that end up being shown to be false. It turns into a boy who cried wolf situation.
And, I'll say it. Get rid of frats and sororities and much of the problem goes away. Shoot me.

I'm not sure her being hot will make up for her taking a dump in your bed. There is a line to be drawn.Yeah, but she's hot.
Prime example of why the District Attorney shouldn't be an elected position. He was solely looking at the press a big story conviction would give him for his upcoming reelection. The journalists were terrible. The DA and university were even worse.
I'm sorry. He's my age, she is just a year or two older than my daughter. If he didn't think that was a recipe for disaster, then he is an idiot and deserved everything he got. He is supposed to be the adult....but acted just a childish as she did.Isn't it? I have said over and over again since all this cancel culture crap started that folks need to be careful. I said they are both batshit crazy. She doesn't get a pass because of her age. She is well old enough to know better, as is he. However, she was more the abuser than he was in this instance. She doesn't get a pass because of her age nor her gender, which is what many wanted to giver her because she was a woman. They didn't want to believe a woman could be so cruel.I'm sorry. I agree...both are batshit crazy and both were abusive....abuse is abuse, verbal, physical....both are bad. Dealt with it in my family and have no sympathy for any who are abusers. And, sorry, but I believe the fact that he is quite older and SHOULD be more mature does make a difference.I said they are both batshit crazy. She doesn't get a pass because of her age. Again, a perfect example of the rush to judgment coming back an biting cancel culture.
I’m sorta stupid and not a news guy. Reminder of what? However, if there is a time to run such a story, now would be it. I think it should be run every year as a reminder.
How we shouldn't rush to cancel someone over just an allegation. That maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to let things play out BEFORE we take someone's life from them.I’m sorta stupid and not a news guy. Reminder of what?
Gotcha. No kidding. How we shouldn't rush to cancel someone over just an allegation. That maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to let things play out BEFORE we take someone's life from them.
It's called being 'woke' --- and it has nothing to do with skin color. The justice system is out of control...no matter your skin color. The lax players are lucky that the junior attorney took a crash course in DNA. Otherwise, they'd be in jail today and for many more years to come.
And you gotta love Duke University. Fired a great lax coach in a knee jerk reaction over a falsified story. Too scared of societal backlash...no backbone whatsoever.
