I’ve already established the Reebok pumps are the coolest of all time, specially the ones I had

What shoes take 2nd place?
As a kid in Memphis, the other shoe I remember being excited about were the Penny’s. Mom took me to the Raleigh Springs Mall to get these. The Penny II’s.

We were poor. Couldn’t afford the Reebok pumps. I saved up Christmas money and got some LA Gear Regulators.

I couldnt get Jordans in '92, so being a Chicago kid, I got Pippens instead. I still clearly remember the ankle bone cutout.
Not the coolest shoe, but functionally way better than the Reebok Pumps that these replaced. Those Pumps couldnt stay inflated and I needed protection when banging in the post!!!...so I bought shoes with an ankle bone cutout.





A lot of basketball shoes now are lightyears better in performance and looks.
Some of the WOW AC 11s are damn cool.
The new Anta KT10 in Crossing Time colorway is cool as balls.
And the LiNing Liren 4 and 5 models have really cool colorways.

When I was real young, I had a pair of Zips. The commercials basically promised that I would run and jump like Steve Austin*. I remember being fairly disappointed when I was still the second fastest kid in first grade. I never could beat Roderick, even when he was wearing jeans and dress shoes. That damn Roderick.

*For you younger types, not Stone Cold. I'm referring to the original Steve Austin: Astronaut. A man barely alive. But "gentlemen, we can rebuild him."

We had moved and I was "the new kid" in school in the 8th grade (you know what all that means) and needed new shoes for the basketball team. Never forget my parents absolutely refusing to buy me Chuck Taylor's that of course EVERYBODY else had and I got Sears Jeepers.

One of the most humiliating things (at the time) of my youth that's still clear in my mind over 50 years later. Funny enough, a life lesson example I've also used over those same 50 years in the great debate when "kids must have XYZ brand name" including my own. Thought it was the end of the world but my parents held firm, I played in my Jeepers without incident and I'm still here to tell about it.

"Sneaker indifference" (and general cheapness) must have also rubbed off on me as I sported these in church league early in my working days. Funny what you will "settle" for when you are spending your own money.

They were really called Jeepers? I bet you got really good at fist-fighting, or really funny to get them off you.

Nah. I was a big Orlando Magic fan. Watched them from game one until Shaq left every game. Watched that team built from the ground up. Terry Catledge Reggie Theus and on to the championship game
