You hate Franklin. Congrats. We get it. The schtick with some is getting very old.
I don’t hate anyone. And certainly not Franklin. But results are results. He will have yet another (undeserved - 11 years…who else gets this long to figure things out and perform on their job?) chance at this point to get a decent win.

Another poster talked about O$U reeling off 5 straight Top-5 wins. Now that’s results!

O$U has better material than us. But not that much better.

NFL designed check downs? I saw nothing we did not see against weak competition with last year’s WRs. It all looks good against Villanova. Until a real team shows up.

I will believe it when I see better downfield passing against a team with a pulse.

I was at game. I have been at most games over last few decades. You should try it sometime. You can see much more than on TV.

WRs were struggling to get open. It will get harder when real season starts. Ineffective running by Singleton should not give anyone warm and fuzzies either.
Sorry if that wasn't clear. The out routes, the deep comeback route, etc. were designed NFL throws which had separation.
I've been to many games in person--the experience is better at home. You can also break things down with video.
I don't expect a ton of deep balls this year. That's not the strength of the receivers. They are better route runners though that bar was low
Singleton had, I believe, 8 carries--doesn't really mean much. He was effective as a receiver.

Hopefully you will still be laughing at season’s end. After 11 years of the same old, same old - it’s just not funny anymore.
This makes 59 years since I attended my 1st Penn State game. I've always been able to enjoy my role as a fan/spectator. Life has taught me ( as well as simple common sense) that if you don’t enjoy something....stop doing it.

The performance is even worse when you examine Nevada’s 2024 results. If the OL does not meaningfully improve from wk1, this is a 2-3 loss team. I went into this game thinking we would put so many rushing yards up that it would be difficult to get a sense of the new transfer wrs. The opposite happened.
2-3 losses? What kind of gummies are you ingesting because you high man!

Who else gets this long to figure things out? Hmm. When did you start following PSU football?

Why do you torture yourself by going to the games if it is that bad?

If your constant irrational attacks on Franklin are not evidence of you hating him ... what's it like when you DO hate someone?

Boiled bunnies? Horseheads in the bed? Death threats for the entire family? And all that just before noon on a Monday?

I’m not a play calling analyst or anything, but sitting in the stands it was obvious this team was going through motions. We will see what they’re all about against Oregon.

POSITIVES
- DDS (dominant)
- Amare Campbell (leading tackler, plays under control)
- Transfer WRs (Hudson & Pena were effective. Need to get Ross involved)
- Special Teams (FGs. 4 for 4; excellent PR by King Mack)
- Allar was efficient
- QB #2 Grunkemeyer played well and looked poised
- Zane Durant disruptive and had INT
- Alonzo Ford, Jr looked good teamed with Zane even with limited reps
- Xavier Gilliam, Ty Blanding, and Enai White did well w/their reps at DT

NEGATIVES
- Allar running (scrambling too much against inferior opponent)
- Starting OL allowed too much pressure on Allar
- Starting OL weren't sustaining blocks in run game (still work in progress)
- Desperately need Zuriah Fisher back @ other DE position
- Young DEs were often pinched inside allowing Purdy (QB) to scramble. They'll learn
- Rojas & Deluca slow start. Rojas did better as game progressed
- Still no clarity on LBers beyond the primary three

Your thoughts?
Pretty much agree but was it really the starting OL at any point? I'm not sure. I've never seen an OL subbed and switching positions more than they did in the first quarter yesterday.

Was I the only one surprised that Donkoh started at RG? Was there any indication of that coming out of camp? The OL did a lot of shuffling today also. Cousins and Shanahan got a lot of reps with the starters. Perhaps the meshing of OL rotations isn’t quite gelling yet?
Maybe. It was all over the Den and various podcasts.
But I was surprised at all the switching and subbing they did on the OL in the first quarter. It looked to me like they used it as another more valuable live practice.

If you think checkdowns and a broken play will cut it against real teams, I wish you the best.

One could also ask why we needed to throw so much against such a weak team with the “Best OL in USA.”

And these WRs are finished products. Yikes.
A couple things. I'm not sure we ever saw what the starting OL will look like. There were so many subs and 2nd and 3rd stringers and TRUE Freshman playing that it was hard to keep track of. I think we'll see the same thing next week as well. The starting OL will start to come together for Oregon. MO is they used this as a better live practice.
I also think Nevada reversed last years tendency on defense and played with a really, really deep safety taking away the deep stuff so Drew and the WR's and O adjusted. Something I was very happy to see.

I got that beat. This season is 61 years since I attended my first Penn State game. It was on 11/7/1964 and also my first CFB game ever watching live and in person (at age 6). My father was on the OSU faculty at the time so we had faculty tickets. Been a Penn State fan ever since.

11/5/66 vs Syracuse. Orange had Little, Csonka and Tom Coughlin in their backfield. Boosters sent the FB team and cheerleaders after our Friday night game. On the way home, I asked a very pretty girl if I could sit with her. Six years and 5 months later she became my wife.

One issue could be that Penn State doesn't have their best tackle, playing tackle, but guard instead...i get it, trying to get your best 5 out there...guys coming back from injuries...playing multiple backups a lot, but Donkoh is their best NFL level tackle on their roster, most likely...

Check downs? Yeah some were...some were good decisions going through his progressions...some were amazing, designed NFL throws. They even broke it down during the game. Maybe you were at the game or had a few too many but Allar was about as sharp as any QB could be..

But no OSU isn't worried...they shut down almost every pass game they play. Downs is arguably the best player in the country. We'll need DDS to negate that. It's going to be a low scoring game like Texas-OSU and Clemson-LSU
The OSU defense is really good but a better QB for Texas yesterday probably beats them. That and not running a QB sneak blindly into a brick wall. Allar playing well can beat them there especially after seeing our WRs Hudson and Pena but that was Nevada not OSU. Whether they can get open vs an elite secondary is still a big TBD. That game as you say will be low scoring, I just hope Kotelnicki doesn't get unnecessarily conservative with the playcalling. I hope Oregon gives us a decent benchmark for how good our WRs actually are but I'm not sure how good they are in the secondary. Finally, I would like to see our TEs get more targets. Dinkins had one catch, Luke Reynolds, two. Rapp had three but that was in garbage time. Not Tyler Warren level targets but enough to keep the defenses guessing.

We wanted to pass a lot so I didn't see that we were committed to ground and pound and got stuffed on the majority of the running plays I thought it was more pass protection and that should get better as the guys get more experience playing as a unit. I'm not overly concerned but clearly they need to play better.

I agree. I think Donkoh might end up back starting at RT and Cousins or Shanahan (probably Cousins) starting at RG when PSU plays Oregon.

CJF addressed the TE situation post game and said he expected more throws to the TEs. Eventually Coach K and Allar will sort this out. It should be game-by-game specific given what they can exploit against a defense. We won't see a return to a single TE dominating pass catching for this season like last year w/Warren. There would seem to be more passing game options this year and Coach K and Allar's decision making need to make it work.

Landon Tengwall (former OL himself) who does good vlogs and commentary on the team seemed to expect this.

PSU had 6 completions to TEs (along with 17 completions to wideouts and 6 to RBs) - that's far from the TEs doing nothing.

You didn't see anything different? Last year we had zero games where a WR had 6 receptions. Both Hudson and Pena had 6+ yesterday. WR play and the passing game was obviously improved.
