If we were to make the Final Four in Men's Basketball it would do more for our university than 10 CWS trips. But winning the Egg Bowl and beating Ole Miss in one of their go-for-it years is just too nice to pass up.

#1 because us being .500 would be a good season all things considered, but with a loss to a 6-6 State team, OM would likely not be included in the playoffs.
I think the Egg Bowl win has so many beautiful side effects, it's hard to vote for anything else:
1. Probably guarantees Ole Miss is not in the SEC CG.
2. Probably guarantees Ole Miss is not in the 12 team playoff.
3. Both of those dreams are crushed on their home field.
4. 10 year anniversary and revenge for 2014.
5. I love seeing those 17ers lose.

why GIF

for those selecting baseball

edited to add: everyone choosing to grill a bratwurst in the left field lounge next year over ruining ole miss’s most anticipated football season in decades can go to hell.

Well, because we have national respect in baseball, we have potential to compete nationally in baseball, we have a national championship in baseball. In football we are and always will be just slightly better than Vandy. Football is about money and history, we have neither compared to the SEC football powers. NIL and the transfer portal has even further distanced us from the SEC elite. What is basketball?

Looking at probabilities, the most likely is basketball winning a ncaa tournament game. the least likely is football going 6-6 and beating ole miss this year.

Win a game in March Madness for sure.

- We were almost a national seed in baseball this year, and the collective view of this board is that we were trash in baseball this year.
- Beating Ole Miss is really fun, but coming into the Egg Bowl at 5-6 just isnt exciting to me.

I would much rather experience a basketball season where we are good enough to be selected to the NCAA Tournament and also win a game.

That wasn’t the question.

You just couldn’t resist to get your daily negative jab about the football program. Mission accomplished!

You have to factor in basketball and baseball can achieve success in the nil/portal environment quite a bit easier than football can. I think that’s being realistic and should be a part of future funding and strategy.

I picked football but basketball is right there with it.

Going 6-6 in football would be big and throw in beating a really good Ole Miss team (and maybe spoiling their playoff hopes) would be icing on the cake.

The question was would you rather… I don’t understand why you’re talking about NIL and the portal environment. That doesn’t have anything to do with this thread

6-6 was the expectation floor for our football program for quite a stretch recently, and now we're back to trying to talk ourselves into maaaaybe, soooooomehow we can get there if we beat om.

What a bummer.

stolen from the pay board
“One of these things is not like the others”

Baseball’s outlook is still very open ended as far as the final outcome. That team could win it all, or not make it out of its own regional.

Football’s outcome is pretty much completely known…..nobody gives a 17 about the bowl games anymore, and especially not the ones that are destinations for 6-6 teams.

Basketball - there’s not a whole lot of difference to me in winning 0 games or 1 game in March….and not a lot of likelihood of us ever again winning more than 2 (unless its 3 wins with one being a First Four game). So that possibility feels like its almost a completely known outcome to me.

If I had to pick only 1 of those 3, and roll the dice on the other 2, I’m taking baseball because that team could win a natty.

But I think a more applicable comparison would be something like this:

Baseball - Goes into postseason as Top 8 national seed.

Football - Wins at least 3 SEC games (Egg Bowl result unknown).

Basketball - Makes the NCAA tournament as an at-large (First Four vs. normal field placement is unknown).

That’s tougher, because all 3 require some assumptions to fill in the gaps on how the regular season went or would go, and all have total uncertainty on the postseason result (and I’m including the Egg Bowl as part of football’s “postseason result”). But I’d still probably choose baseball.

A couple other thoughts

This poll will look a lot different in September. Once people embrace football season I imagine the results would be 90% football.

Maybe folks on here just don’t hate ole miss like they used to. It’s a shame.

You don't have to like it but unless you have half a brain you can't deny it's the TRUTH......
Yeah It’s a great attitude to have if you want to make the drive to Starkville in 2034 to watch us play a CUSA conference football game against Rice. And slowly watch Starkville erode into becoming Macon, MS. (No offense to anyone from Macon here, it’s a good town).

Let’s invest less in football and give more to baseball! That’s an awesome plan and mindset to have. That’ll surely attract more students and further the university.

You make this post shortly after you call someone a loser because he picked baseball… the question was would you rather… not what is best for the university or athletic department.

just for the record, I picked football because from what I can tell that would be a big step forward for Lebby but I understand why some pick baseball. Some just enjoy baseball more and that’s just a fact that won’t change.

Choosing to host a regional over making a bowl game in Lebby’s first year, beating ole miss on ABC in front of millions in the midst of their most anticipated season (maybe ever) is insane. Only a loser would choose that. Loser isn’t a strong enough word.

I love message boards. I have been coming on here and reading since the very beginning. One thing I have never been able to process is how some people think they can decide what someone else prefers. It is actually hilarious. The question is.....LITERALLY "Which would you rather have" and you are flying off the rails. Guess what, there are people in our fanbase that would rather win a track meet that ever win another football game. No matter how big a hissy fit you throw that's what they like. Get over it....or don't.

Oh. I chose baseball. In your face.

I took basketball winning a game in the Dance because that is more of an accomplishment than beating the Confederates and going to the Liberty or Birmingham Bowl. It has been a long time since we have won a game in the tourney, so that would be progress. I just can't get that excited about 6-6.

I have a strong feeling if the football scenario played out and then we hosted a regional next year and played Kansas State you’d choose football 10/10. It’s just that it’s early June and everyone still has a Dudy Noble boner

As a die hard State fan, I'd love to see us accomplish all three things on this poll and even more. I'm not going to be pessimistic and say we can't do any of those things because there's no reason we shouldn't. None of these expectations are unreasonable by any means.
