What I love about this thread is all the hidden Misogyny in it. People can't just help themselves. The same people who hate the NBA also hate the fact they help the WNBA, where does it stop. :)
What does misogyny mean?

That is ridiculous, where on here does anybody say anything about hating women, where does anybody even hint at that?

We have had the most dominant WBB program in the country over the past six years. It has been populated with great athletes, homegrown heroes, and marvelous role models. It has been coached by a woman revered in basketball circles, who was elected by her peers to carry the flag in the Olympics representing our nation.

It is something every Gamecock should take pride in and yet....... there is a constant faction on this board who seek to denigrate women’s athletic achievements, especially in basketball.

They are continually antagonistic to our WBB program. I have no answer for the source of this animus. Just that I find it odd that Gamecocks raised in a society that proclaims to honor women belittle those who bring athletic glory to our university.

I watched about 3 minutes.

I do watch our women play though. The only reason there is a WNBA is because the NBA pays for it. Then the women players demand equal pay for equal work. It’s ridiculous.

That would actually be perfectly awesome if WNBA players demanded equal pay. WNBA minimum salary is around $60,000. NBA minimum salary is close to $1 million. No way the WBA would foot the bill for that. Actually, they just might be dumb enough to do it.

That's fine, if they want to present the WNBA as basically a charity. But they don't. It's presented as a serious sports league, which it is no. If it were, it would not still, after 2 decades, have to be heavily subsidized by the NBA just to remain afloat. It's kind of like previous iterations of spring football. Nobody wanted it and the leagues went belly-up. Clearly, nobody wants the WNBA and it should have gone belly-up a very long time ago, but it's a PC thing by the NBA to keep it going.
There's enough people out there who want the WNBA such that the MNBA subsidizing it creates sufficient good will for all involved.

You said dawn is a woman???? Tell me what a woman is, and how do you know Dawn identifies as such? Sounds like you do a lot of assuming there Toby

The point of the WNBA is to give little girls an opportunity to play a sport that they love for a living when they grow up. It does not have to always be about the money. It is like some of you'll get offended by the WNBA existence. The good will that it brings outweighs the money loss to a billion-dollar business. I hope it is around for another 25 years.
You’re spot on with the comment it gives little girls an opportunity. Completely agree.

I disagree it doesn’t come down to the money. It will never happen, but IF the Chinese market closed for the NBA the WNBA would fold like a cheap card table. Margins would get thin for NBA.

At the end of the day would you go to work for no pay? Probably not. An owner of a WNBA team would not lose money indefinitely.

But to me, the elephant in the room is WHY? Why doesn’t the WNBA make money? I was in high school when it launched and ESPN2 was all over it. It’s not a lack of marketing.

In the 26 years of WNBA play, there's been something like 30 dunks. Total.

I always assumed it was just absolute die-hard basketball fans who went to these games, but that can't be the case because this isn't basketball.

GG Jackson could play in the WNBA tonight and instantly be the best player in the history of the game.

I guess there are not very many true feminists.

Well, with 12 teams and an average attendance of 7,000 (rounding up considerably), one could reasonable assume there are about 42,000 feminists in the country (6 games x 7,000 fans/game).

What's wild, with how pitiful the WNBA is in absolutely every single metric, there are some who feel the WNBA needs to EXPAND:

Imagine Coca-Cola saying "we're going to increase production of New Coke!"

I assure you it's not misogyny on my part. I'm equally critical of professional spring football.

The old saying... Would you rather find $1 on the street, or have your local WNBA team with the title? Give me a dollar please.

I love people who claim to not care about something always have so much to say about it. I personally love basketball. The NBA, WNBA, NCAA men and women.
You cannot claim to love basketball AND enjoy the WNBA. You may watch it and claim to enjoy it because you feel some more obligation, but you cannot enjoy it for the basketball.

it would be like saying you go to Golden Corral because you love steak.
