Michigan football has added five in transfer portal: Here’s how they fit

Sayfie and Broome began the show by breaking down a pair of wide receiver transfer commitments in C.J. Charleston (Youngstown State) and Amorion Walker (Ole Miss), who spent the last semester in Oxford but is returning to Michigan.

“We knew they needed wide receivers, and they got a couple,” Sayfie said.

“Yeah, and I think they’re two good additions, too,” Broome said. “In terms of, you took one depth guy and one, basically, lotto ticket, so there’s a little upside with both additions but the upside would more be toward Amorion Walker, who now goes into year three of, ‘What the hell is he, despite being a freaky athlete?’

“I look at C.J. Charleston. He’s a guy that you’re probably looking at as a backup to [junior] Tyler Morris at the ‘Z’ spot, and then Amorion Walker, he steps in and I expect him to compete for time at the ‘X.’ I think Fred Moore gets some time there, Amorion Walker is going to play for some time there. [Senior] Peyton O’Leary is a guy that is going to compete for time there. But when you look at this room now, they spent most of spring ball with five scholarship guys in O’Leary, Tyler Morris, [sophomore] Fredrick Moore, [sophomore] Semaj Morgan, [sophomore] Kendrick Bell.

“[Michigan offensive coordinator] Kirk Campbell talked about this a couple weeks ago — you are a pulled hamstring, a rolled ankle or some kind of injury away from all the sudden being kind of light there. They were never going to get [Penn State transfer] KeAndre Lambert-Smith. They were never going to go out there and get a No. 1 wide receiver. I think they like their top three. I like their top three quite a bit. It sounds like a law firm of Morgan, Morris and Moore. And then from there, we’ll see what happens.

“Charleston, for me, I talked about how it looked likely that they’d make some [former Michigan wide receiver] Daylen Baldwin-esque type of addition. To me, this fits that bill, in terms of a veteran guy moving up a level rounding out your wide receiver room.

“Amorion Walker, he’s interesting, man. He was injured last year in [Michigan’s] fall camp, they really wanted to give this cornerback thing a try. But elite movement skills, a guy that is in a similar pot to [junior quarterback] Alex Orji where he’s too good an athlete to not find a role for him somewhere.”
