The NFL Combine came to an unfortunate and untimely conclusion for USC offensive guard Andrew Vorhees on Sunday. The First-Team All-American and likely Day 2 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft went down with an injury while participating in position drills during the event.

Reporters in attendance said event trainers looked at his right leg/knee area before helping him off the field and into the locker room. He was able to put some weight on the leg leaving the field. No official injury report was given.

It’s unfortunate for any player to suffer an injury at the Combine, but it’s especially disappointing to see this happen to Vorhees. The veteran senior dealt with injuries repeatedly during his final year with the Trojans. He sat out the game at Arizona in the middle of the season and did his best to be in the lineup while battling that injury the rest of the season. He was limited against Colorado but played the entire time in a thrilling win at UCLA. Vorhees then came off the field early in the season finale against Notre Dame and was sidelined for both the Pac-12 Championship Game against Utah and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic against Tulane.

He entered the Combine healthy and participated in both the vertical jump and broad jump testing before suffering the injury while going through position drills.

Vorhees’ Testing Numbers

Vorhees posted a vertical jump of 29 inches, which tied for No. 21 among the 40 offensive linemen who participated. He posted an 8’9″ broad jump, which tied for No. 23 among the 39 linemen who did that event.

He measured in at 6-foot-6, 310 pounds, with 32 1/8″ arm length and 10-inch hand width.

NFL.com Scouting Report on Vorhees

NFL.com posts scouting reports on each of the players participating in the NFL Combine. Here’s what it says about Vorhees:

“Guard prospect with five years of starting experience that shows itself with consistency and football IQ. Vorhees is a technically sound run blocker with a repeatable process. His range laterally and to the second level will be a little limited, but he’s an even-paced drive blocker, using excellent positioning, leveraged hands and churning legs. He needs to get quicker with inside hands in pass protection and guard against trying to protect his edges with his hands rather than a foot slide. There are things to clean up, but he has enough polish and strength to start early on.

There’s also a quote from an anonymous scout. This one is on Vorhees from a West Coast scout for an NFC team:

“Rock solid. Same guy, game in and game out. He’s not going to be a Pro Bowler but he will get the job done.”
