Penn State has the type of team who can beat anyone and lose to anyon on any given night. Comes down to shooting 3's, they have 5-6 legit 3 point shooters who can go on a heater an change any game, plus with Picketts ability to get what he wants seemingly against anyone they can be tought, but in the 2nd half last night NO ONE could hit anything and Purdue pulled away. Winter, Dread, Lundy all had good looks early in the 2nd half and all missed, PSU needs those shots to fall to have a shot since they have no Bigs to compelte inside.
This.

They get hot in March who knows? 👀

Even when they are frustrating they are hella fun to watch. Our freshman are GOOD.
Clancy showing some good skills and played a lot of good minutes. Mahaffey is very athletic but needs to play with some control. Nijie brings very little to the table at this point.

A ridiculous disparity in fouls in this game. It’s a good thing that Nebby couldn’t shoot free throws.

Based on what? Nije has been seriously overmatched all year. Clary looks athletic but hasn't done much. Mahaffey is the only one to make a meaningful contribution but he can't stay out of foul trouble.

Brown and Lilley have hardly played.

It was pretty pathetic. Not only did we not get foul calls when we did take the ball to hoop, we got called for offensive fouls. You can see Coach Shrew is getting really tired of it. If I was him, I’d probably look to go somewhere else where I might get more of a fair shake.

That's true in most games. PSU doesn't have anybody but Pickett who can draw fouls near the rim, and they don't have anybody who can defend opponents big men in the paint.

You're correct that PSU was lucky Nebraska missed 11 FTs including a few front end of 1-1. PSU is going to have to play better if they hope to win the rematch on February 5th.

I just took a look…you’d think just by accident there’d be one game where the other team has more fouls than we do, but nope, not yet. And today’s game was by far the biggest discrepancy….22-12. I know, other teams take it to the paint and draw fouls while we just shoot threes, but the Purdue game was 12-11 and they have more of an inside presence than Nebby. And Pickett, Wynter, Lundy, Funk and Clary do take it to the hoop, they just don’t get any calls.

Big guys are a work in progress. Nijie has not been productive at all, and #4 struggled today, missed two consecutive layups at one point.

But glad the team kept their foot on the gas in the 2nd half. Too many blown leads in recent history.

BTW... awesome to hear Pickett's name being used in discussions about All-Americans. It's been awhile... (actually, who was the last one?)

Brown is basically redshirting. If you don't see the incredible ability in both Clary and Mahaffey amidst an older team where it is hard to shine there isn't much to say.

Jesse Arnelle was a 1954 AP Honorable Mention All-American. Am not aware of any others.

After the disappointing loss to Wisky and the win against the Huskers, we've slipped one spot in ESPN's Bracketology ... we're now 2nd in line in the First 4 Out, behind Kentucky. 12 more regular season games to go. Big week coming up with ranked Rutgers and Meatchicken on the schedule.

Once again Coach Shrewsberry is pleasing with the fan base to come out and support this team. I would hope that the fans in central Pa turnout for the games. With 40k+ students on campus hard to understand why they can't park em in for games.

Gotta start winning with consistency for that to happen. Long history of not doing that with the program.

Next 3 out of 4 on the road. Only home game is Sunday with Michigan. Crucial stretch, somehow PSU needs to split these 4 at worst.

Fair weather fans are not genuine.

You would think Shrewsberry would have been aware that MBB at PSU was a major gate challenge.

Shrew should be working on having 3-4 games at Rec Hall. That would be a treat for the students and be a loud, true home court advantage

It's a big opportunity but PSU is going to have to make me a believer. They haven't been able to slow down an opponent's big man all year. Crowl looked like Superman against PSU. Omoruyi is averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds per game and I fear we'll make him look even better. Dorsey's back so maybe he can help but he's giving up 3 inches and some physical strength.

Nor should they be. Since I graduated 50 years ago Penn State has been to the Big Dance 4 times. Robert Morris here in Pittsburgh has been there 8 times. Perhaps there would be more genuine fans if we had a genuine program.

And of those 8 times Robert Morris made it, PSU probably had a better team in many of those years. Too many mid-majors make the tournament and it’s getting worse because they love the Cinderella teams that never end up winning it.

Yes, Robert Morris has an easier path than Penn State, but we have 100 times the resources. 4 appearances in over 50 years, none in the last 20, is pathetic. It's an embarrassment and there are no excuses for it. The point is, no one should expect fans to invest their hard earned dollars and valuable time to watch a team that is a bottom feeder. If they ever win consistently fans will show up in droves.

I agree we should make the tournament more often, but I don’t think fans would show up in droves.

And how many of those middle of the pack teams from the upper conferences actually end up winning? Yes, the tourney is too big but it's not the mid-majors that is the problem.
