157 Consolation R1: #16 seed Brady Berge vs. #33 seed Derek Holzschlag (UNI) (I'll use DH)

I really want Brady to advance.

Per 1
a bit of a flurry, and then Berge with the TD on the edge, 2-0. Nearly had NF, but didn't get them. OOB. Berge quickly flattens him. DH now works up to his knees, then to his feet, and Berge basically cuts him 2-1. Berge in on a low double, DH grabs the ankles, but Berge turns in and gets the TD, 4-1. Berge looking active. Berge working a tilt and is getting swipes. 2 NF and they are OOB, 6-1. RT over 1 min for Berge. Berge is looking good so far. DH tries a bit of a switch but the buzzer. RT @ 2:14 for Berge

Per 2
Berge takes neutral. Interesting. Berge in on a low single, then elevates the leg and trips DH down as they go OOB with 1:34 left, 8-1. And now blood stoppage fro DH. Berge with another TD. Berge with an Olympic start and it's 8-2. Berge with a head outside single to a double for the TD, 10-2. DH to his feet and Berge cuts him, 10-3. Berge gets sloppy as DH drops to a low single on the edge and gets the TD, 10-5. Berge to his feet, back down. End. RT @ 1:30 for Berge

Per 3
DH takes bottom. He works to his feet, and Berge cuts him, 10-6. DH shoots a double, Berge sprawls, and a stalemate with 1:32 left. Dh shoots again, Berge sprawls, nothing. Berge with a low single and gets the TD, 12-6. DH to his feet but they are OOB with 1:01 left. Olympic restart makes it 12-7. RT is locked for Berge. Berge with a head inside single to a double for a TD, 14-7. 30 sec left. DH to his feet, returned, then Berge locks in on the ankle and a stall warning at the buzzer. With RT, it'a a 15-7 MAJOR!!!

And this is why I don't do pools....I want to be able to relish in a team like Kentucky losing without worrying about my brackets!

that's why I enjoy the BWI pool. It's free, and you can make two pool entries. While I'm super competitive, I just treat them as fun, and don't really care how my teams do. Half the time I can't even remember who I picked. Back in the day, when I entered some expensive pools that had huge payouts I used to be like you -- caring too much about the teams I picked, and not enjoying the tournament.

That's a wrap for PSU wrestlers tonight.

Keep in mind that tomorrow's schedule starts an hour earlier in the morning, and an hour later in the evening.

Pretty good round, extending the lead, moving people on and avoiding pitfalls.

that's the name of the game on Day 1 of NCAAs. Dean nearly lost, which would have really put a damper on the day's wrestling for PSU fans.

Where’s Bartlett? Did I miss that?
He'll go tomorrow against #19 seed Thomas from NW. If it goes according to seeding, he should win his next two matches. Of course, during tournament time seeds sometimes don't mean much.

We were talking hoops in a meeting today. One guy said he had seen LeBron play in high school. One other guy had seen Kobe play in high school. The only good high school player I saw was Sam Bowie back in maybe 1979 or 1980 and he played at Kentucky. Nobody had heard of him......God I felt old.

Looking at Beau’s bracket, he’s got about as favorable a draw as you could ask for. He just needs to get by Yahya; I think they had a close one last time. Hopefully with a little more experience he can flip the script.

Team scores as of right now. Could change with a few matches to go.

The Lions recorded three pins, one technical fall, and six major decisions over the pair of sessions. Combined with five decisions, Penn State racked up 27.5 team points. Arizona State is in second with 21.5. Michigan (21), Iowa (20), and North Carolina State (17.5) round out the top five.

It means PSU has a comfortable lead. But, it is by no means insurmountable. According to the Penn State Wrestling Club team scoring tracker, N.C. State has the maximum potential point at 269.5. Iowa is next at 265, followed by Penn State (245), Michigan (238), and Arizona State (193.5).

Chad Redd getting called for stalling in OT......it was his third so he lost. I didn't see it but JB knows a tad more than me

Redd was slowly pushed out of bounds, and the ref called stalling. Ridiculous.

much appreciated.

I saw the match. It was a great battle, and it's unfortunate that it was decided in that manner.

As a ref, and someone that knows the rule, it wasn't an inaccurate call by the rule book.

Would I have made the call? Probably not, as I thought there was enough continuous action that caused the OOB. But Redd did seem to take a step back, and the ref was only a few feet from the action and had a perfect view.

Interestingly, this is part of the outcome of trying to put specifics into stalling. 5 years ago (or thereabouts), they didn't exist, and that would not have been called. It's similar to the mandatory stall call if a top wrestler stays below the waist for 5 sec.

Burroughs, a Nebraska alum, seems to have been tweeting more as a fan than as someone that is one of the top dogs in the sport (and someone that was an announcer in the B1G tournament).

Let the wrestles decide who wins. Refs MUST back off and make the obvious calls or don’t invite and pay them a ton of money for Nationals.

Just tell them that--along with Hakeem Olajuwon--Bowie was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan. That should get their attention... if they've heard of him.

Unfortunately, no matches against either Michigan or Iowa in the next round. We need them to lose a few matches or this is going to be a real nailbiter. Hopefully they wrestle against each other in a few weight classes.

that's just full of misinformation.

First, the refs don't make a "ton of money" for working Nationals. They get paid a decent amount, but it's 3 days work, very long days. It may actually be 4 days -- they may have to be there on Wed and go through some meetings -- I haven't checked on that in several years. And they get done so late on Saturday that they're spending the night in the host area, so it's at least 4 nights and possibly 5, and at least 3 days and possibly 4. That's a lot of interruption to one's normal job, normal life, etc., and the amount they get paid is probably less than most of them make per week in their normal job. No refs are getting rich from reffing.

The refs do allow the wrestlers to decide who wins Within The Rules.

Lastly, they aren't there just to make the obvious calls. Pretty much any college ref, and most HS college refs, could make the obvious calls. These are the elite refs and they are there to make the obvious calls, as well as to make the correct calls in unusual situations that are rarely seen, as well as to enforce ALL of the rules.
