Nola pitching a great game, and the Phillies revert to form and give him almost no offensive support.

Nationals' pitcher Gray with 11 Ks (his MLB career high), thru 6 innings.

Thankfully, as @Grant Green hinted at, Kyle Schwarber is still on a rampage, so it's Phils up 2-1 after 6 innings.

Odubel's bonehead plays sometimes seem to outweigh his positives. It looked like Nola glanced in that direction and gave a subtle head shake before entering the dugout when the inning was over. Or maybe I saw something which wasn't there.

I don't know where else to put this but it's fantastic.

16 Ks by the Phils batters. Combine that with a poor play by Odubel on a ball hit to deep center, and a home plate ump that was calling a strike on pitches off the outside corner by 3-4", and it's a 3-2 loss for the Phightins.

Hang this loss on Herrera. Poor play by a major league center fielder.

Inelligible: Realmuto, Bohm, Stott, Schwarber, Castellanos, Moniak, Knebel, Hand, Brogdon, Falter, Nola

You’ve got to be kidding me! I know it’s only two games, but it’s not like they aren’t in a division or wild card race or anything!!!

I'm sure in the past those guys have gotten injections for a variety of aches and pains so they could continue playing. But a vaccine?? Can't do that......

Friday nite's game, which was delayed due to rain. Not many would have expected a run like this from the Phightin's bullpen

Saturday's game:

Phil's take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 9th. Bottom of the 9th, Knebel comes in, and walks the leadoff batter. smh. The next batter hits a chopper to Bohm, and he tries to get the lead runner at 2nd, but throws the ball into right field. 1st & 3rd, and nobody out. smh X 2. Knebel gets ahead in the count 1-2 on Arenado, then 2-2 (nearly a wild pitch), then a foul in the stands, then another foul, then a ground ball foul, then a ball making it 3-2, and then a nice called strike 3 on a curve ball (runner steals 2nd on the play, so 2nd & 3rd with 1 out). Carlson (a lefty) steps to the plate: foul back, 0-1; grounder to Hoskins in the hole, he freezes the runner on 3rd, and Knebel doesn't cover 1st but Stott playing normal 2nd (well, in a bit due to a man on 3rd, but normal location closer to 2nd base than 1st base) does and they get the 2nd out at 1st. So 2 outs, and still 2nd & 3rd. Dickerson (another lefty) up for the Cards: a high fly ball to right that is caught on the warning track. Too much drama, but the Phils win, 1-0.

I turned it off when I saw Knebel coming in for the save.

Knebel pitched well. Got squeezed like a bastard on that walk, had a terrible error by Bohm, and got through the inning.

Having said that, still trying to figure out why Gibson was pulled after 7.

If they get Harper and Segura back down the stretch, and maybe add an arm at the trade deadline, they could make some noise in the playoffs.

I am looking at the stretch coming out of the All Star break - 25 games

13 at home, 12 on road

Cubs (3) - home
Braves (5) - 3 at home
Pirates (4) -away
Nats (4) - home
Miami (3) - home
Mets (3) -away
Reds (3) -away

That sounds pretty favorable and gets them to mid Aug when maybe they can think of Harper being back. The next week and those 25 likely determine where this goes. They have got themselves to .541 which translates to 88 wins which is normally the magic number. They are going to be buyers and will add at least one arm.

88 sounds nice. Would we take that at this point or hold out for better? Their win rate has been way above .541 for the last month. They could do better, though may not catch The Mets and the Braves.

The Phils aren't using a regular starting pitcher today. They're going with a bullpen-by-committee approach. Familia was in some trouble in the bottom of the 3rd, but got Pujols to hit to 3rd base and Bohm turned a double play to get out of the bases loaded situation. 1-1 after 3. Phils bats are going to need get active (I think), as the Cards are likely to break through against somebody in the bullpen-by-committee approach.

The Phils kept not cashing in, though they were up 3-1. The Cards got to Sir Anthony in the bottom of the 8th, and took a 4-3 lead (their 1st lead in the series). The Phils then went 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th, to lose the game.

Aaron Nola on the mound for the Phightins tomorrow. Hopefully, they give him some run support this time.

Dominguez clearly didn’t have it and should’ve been pulled.

I missed the game today while out at a football camp. Bummer. A sweep today would've been massive.

I'd be surprised if they get to 90 wins. September will be interesting. They see the Marlins and Braves 13x that month. Both teams have been tough for the Phillies. Right now, I would probably take 88. Hope I'm wrong.

an odd quirk to the schedule, but even if the Phightins had won today, it wouldn't have been a sweep of the Cards. The two teams play tomorrow (Monday) to finish up the series.

Oh really? That's interesting. I thought they were headed to Toronto tomorrow.

I can't remember the last time I saw a four-game series ending on a Monday. That's great though with Nola going tomorrow. 3-1 in St. Louis. I'll take that. Knock on wood.
