You are making some assumptions. Gotta think there will be little interaction of that sort. There definitely won't be any factory toursI can relate, but opening up the country to outsiders might have some benefit.

I made no assumptions. I realize it will be a static environment. That said, I cannot believe it will have no benefit. You are making some assumptions. Gotta think there will be little interaction of that sort. There definitely won't be any factory tours
Did you do that 90mph downhill stuff? I LOVE thatI grew up ski racing, so the Winter Olympics are my favorite of the two.
The worst was giving them to Beijing. Even putting aside China’s abhorrent civil abuses, there’s no mountains around Beijing. From what I’ve read the ski events are an hour away (55 miles) and only have 2 inches of natural snow. All snow you see will be man made.
They need to move these games back to Lillehammer, Nagano, Albertville, Cortina (without Milan), Garmisch, Innsbruck, etc. type towns.
Well, the new push is to stop the financial devastation. The problem is that the IOC sees that as reusing previous spots like LA, Beijing, Paris, etc. where infrastructure is already in place. While Albertville was the official host of the 1992 Winter Olympics, most of the events were held in various locations that were 45 minutes to an hour and a half away from Albertville.
Regarding the wish to return to small towns, I don’t think that small towns/cities can handle the required financial devastation any more.
DH was the one discipline I never raced. I did slalom, GS, and Super-G.Did you do that 90mph downhill stuff? I LOVE that
Maybe a little, not nearly as exciting to me as they once were. Will you watch? I’m ready for them to be over only because the commercials are dreadful.
About the phones:The folks who have been told to leave their phones at home?
I hope our folks do great but I won't be watching
1) I’ll believe it when I see it. Let’s see just how much money is or is not wasted on new improvements to LA, Beijing, Paris, etc.Well, the new push is to stop the financial devastation. As with most other sports, ruined by professionalism.
Beware of commies.About the phones:

Olympians warned to bring burner phones to Beijing
They'll be loaded up with burner phones and laptops and will likely leave their own devices behind.www.axios.com
That's the worst thing about the tv coverage. Will there be 20 minute fluff pieces and underdog stories before every 2 minute event?
Of course, Olympic given. Will there be 20 minute fluff pieces and underdog stories before every 2 minute event?
Well, not if they have any say in it.I definitely find female curling fascinating. Can’t not put my fingers on it.

I’m not saying it’s a solution- just the path the IOC is currently taking. I have no doubt there will still be waste by local city organizing committee members and IOC members who see this as a personal 2 week luxury vacation for themselves.1) I’ll believe it when I see it. 2) Why is reusing previous spots with better existing infrastructure a problem?

If you’re going to default now to only using major cities who have previously hosted Olympic Games then just be done with it and name 2 cities as permanent hosts. No need to be wasting money having a new city upgrade every 2 years (summer and winter).
The loser in that case is the winter games. They’ll lose the charm of being in some ski town/ winter village and be stuck in Vancouver, Salt Lake, or Beijing each year. Might as well hold them in Clevoxymoron.
+1Maybe a little, not nearly as exciting to me as they once were.
Too much snow.
It's times like these I miss Obliviax's spirited defense of all things Cleveland.
He’s a pompous fraudulent ahole.Too much snow.

Has Uncle Lar updated his site?
Be that as it may, it’s how athletes make their livings. We’re a capitalist society and people need to monetize their talents as much as they can. For most, it’s a full time job being an athlete and it’s very expensive getting the right food, coaching, and therapy. For me as with many things that used to be worthwhile, the almighty dollar has ruined it as a once pure display of sportsmanship.
Honestly, was the amateur era really dominated by amateurs? Most were either sponsored and paid for by their countries or wealthy men of leisure with the luxury of pursuing a hobby. For me as with many things that used to be worthwhile, the almighty dollar has ruined it as a once pure display of sportsmanship.
I love the winter Olympics and hate when politics mess with sports. But I cannot in good conscience watch this time. Mind you, I am not advocating a boycott in general, But I won't be watching. Not going to get sanctimonious but I have a hard time getting excited about an event held in a country with a recent history of major human rights issues
