You are making some assumptions. Gotta think there will be little interaction of that sort. There definitely won't be any factory tours
I made no assumptions. I realize it will be a static environment. That said, I cannot believe it will have no benefit.

The Winter Olympics lost some luster when the IOC sold out with their demands for luxury surroundings for their members. It moved the games from small ski towns with the right atmosphere to larger cities with 5* hotels, restaurants, etc.

The worst was giving them to Beijing. Even putting aside China’s abhorrent civil abuses, there’s no mountains around Beijing. From what I’ve read the ski events are an hour away (55 miles) and only have 2 inches of natural snow. All snow you see will be man made.

They need to move these games back to Lillehammer, Nagano, Albertville, Cortina (without Milan), Garmisch, Innsbruck, etc. type towns.

The only event I'll look forward to is ladies figure skating. It makes me nervous like no other sport. The idea they go out there with one chance in a three minute skate doing all these difficult jumps then one fall and they are done puts me on the edge of my seat. The Olympics are the pinnacle of their career and there may not be another opportunity. It really does make me nervous. Interestingly I don't care about the men. They can face plant and it's no big deal.

While Albertville was the official host of the 1992 Winter Olympics, most of the events were held in various locations that were 45 minutes to an hour and a half away from Albertville.

Regarding the wish to return to small towns, I don’t think that small towns/cities can handle the required financial devastation any more.

Well, the new push is to stop the financial devastation. The problem is that the IOC sees that as reusing previous spots like LA, Beijing, Paris, etc. where infrastructure is already in place.

Rumor is they’re even thinking of dropping the winter games in a few years. Don’t know how true that is- just that I’ve seen reports about it.

I have a few family members that are staunchly opposed to watching the Olympics. Anyway, I will be watching when I’m alone.

1) I’ll believe it when I see it. Let’s see just how much money is or is not wasted on new improvements to LA, Beijing, Paris, etc.
2) Why is reusing previous spots with better existing infrastructure a problem?

I definitely find female curling fascinating. Can’t not put my fingers on it. 😞

Well, not if they have any say in it.

Has Uncle Lar updated his site?

I’m not saying it’s a solution- just the path the IOC is currently taking. I have no doubt there will still be waste by local city organizing committee members and IOC members who see this as a personal 2 week luxury vacation for themselves.

If you’re going to default now to only using major cities who have previously hosted Olympic Games then just be done with it and name 2 cities as permanent hosts. No need to be wasting money having a new city upgrade every 2 years (summer and winter).

The loser in that case is the winter games. They’ll lose the charm of being in some ski town/ winter village and be stuck in Vancouver, Salt Lake, or Beijing each year. Might as well hold them in Cleveland. ;)

Too much snow.

It's times like these I miss Obliviax's spirited defense of all things Cleveland.

I enjoy watching the non so mainstream sports. Hockey in the olympics is boring. Figure skating is showed way too much. Curling is now shown way too much. I like ski jumping, down hill skiiing, speed skating(long track)(wish is was still outside). Some of the new xgames stuff is fun to watch like racing on snowboards. The half pipe flying tomato guy I have had a enough of. Bobsled, luge, skeleton I could watch all day long. Nordic combine. I remember they used to have speed skiing where they saw who could go straight downhill the fasted but then someone died so they stopped that. I don't know if barrell jumping on skates was an olympic sport but they should bring that back and add it.

For me as with many things that used to be worthwhile, the almighty dollar has ruined it as a once pure display of sportsmanship.

Be that as it may, it’s how athletes make their livings. We’re a capitalist society and people need to monetize their talents as much as they can. For most, it’s a full time job being an athlete and it’s very expensive getting the right food, coaching, and therapy.

Oh, not that this is the appropriate thread for this story, but I have a cousin who lives next door to Katie Ledecky, who would babysit my cousin’s kids. Katie is a lovely person, I’m told. Anyway, my cousin’s youngest kid once brought Katie and her gold medals to school for show-and-tell. The street cred he got out of this was off the charts, lol.

Not going to get sanctimonious but I have a hard time getting excited about an event held in a country with a recent history of major human rights issues

JMO friends
I love the winter Olympics and hate when politics mess with sports. But I cannot in good conscience watch this time. Mind you, I am not advocating a boycott in general, But I won't be watching.
