I prefer the Winter Olympics to the Summer Olympics because so many events are outdoors in incredible venues. Plus, this time of year there is not a lot going on so it is a good way to pass the time. But, that said, I'm not particularly excited about a Winter Olympics in Beijing.

It’s happening. Saw the U.S. lose to Italy last night in mixed curling. Knowing nothing about curling, I didn’t know they mixed boys and girls in a separate event.

I also watched some men‘s downhill skiing trials. No fans in attendance and 100% man-made snow. Not fun to watch.

It's weird. Curling may not have the electricity and anticipation in the air you'll find in more higher profile sports. Still, it's oddly fascinating.
It was really entertaining last night. Unfortunately USA mixed doubles went 1-2 yesterday, losing to Italy and Norway.

Women’s Hockey: USA 5, Finland 1, 3rd period

A$$. BEATING. o_O

No fans in attendance. It’s like 2020 out there.

USA women finish the Finnish.

Final: USA 5, Finland 2

EDIT: Weird. A Finland shot was thought to hit the post with 2:20 left in the 3rd period. They played on to an apparent 5-1 final. After regulation was thought to have ended, they reviewed the play and ruled it a goal. They then restarted play at 5-2 with 2:20 to play.

Curling on USA Network right now.

Hey @Tom McAndrew or @Ryan Snyder, maybe change the Subject Line of this thread since it’s seemingly become an ongoing Olympics thread? Or something such?

The nice thing about curling is that you can be right back before the stone stops moving. Very convenient.

I always thought that this was exciting even for a guy who had never been on skis

I remember watching that and just being amazed. I also remember Jean-Claud Killy.
I think the Bobb Sled would be fun but I want to be in the middle. I don't want to be responsible for steering or breaking. :ROFLMAO:
And the Luge just looks like a death wish.

Ski jumping is like Acapulco Cliff Diving with sticks on your feet. They should make them do flips.

Good stuff. Looking forward to it.
The ski jumping is my absolute favorite event of the Winter Olympics. Imagine the rush you must get when you take off into the air from the end of the ski jump! The only negative is that, given the need to be light weight in order to maximize distance of the jump, most of these guys are small and skinny enough to be mistaken for anorexics.

Viva Eddie the Eagle!!

Mixed curling on now. U.S.A. vs. Sweden.

Figure skating on later. Short men’s program. What is the height limit? Wait. It’s the men‘s short program.

Flipping through the channels, and noticed Olympic curling was on. Son had just finished lifting so I asked him if he wanted to watch some TV … he looked at the screen and said “that’s just being a janitor as a sport.” I couldn’t argue.

The Swedish curlers should be required to communicate in English. They have to know we can’t understand them. How can they be so insensitive?

You can say what you want once you get safely back in the USA. The Chinese could find a pretext for kicking you out before your competition. The IOC is in China's pocket.

Exactly. I am not aware of any US athletes who opted out becuase of where the games were being held either. Go, compete, win, come back. This, to me, is different than the NBA and Hollywood cowtowing to China for financial reasons. These athletes maybe get one shot in their life for this. Make the most of it.

It’d be a political and PR nightmare for China if they started abducting or kicking out athletes at the Olympics. It would snowball quickly.

All I can say in response is that China doesn’t give one solitary damn about PR. Someone else will have to fill in the details but there was this TV reporter from the Netherlands (as I recall) doing a live bit this morning and Chinese security shut him down, and fast. There is zero chance China doesn’t already have a plan in place to respond to such “provocations,” and it’s not in their nature to turn a blind eye to criticism from outsiders, or their own citizens for that matter.

Like I said, the athletes can talk as much as they want once they come home.

USA defeats Sweden in mixed curling. They referred to the USA woman making her Olympic debut at “only” 29 years old. I guess curling is an old-person’s sport.

I don‘t yet have a feel for an A$$. BEATING. o_O in curling. At this point, I could experience an A$$. BEATING. and not know it.

Will watch...love the Olympics
My sentiments as well. They’re not as good as I remember them from my youth, but I enjoy catching up on sports that won’t get hardly any airtime until 4 years from now. So bring on the luge, speed skating, snow boarding, and even curling!!

I hear ya, but they’re all about saving face and perception. This is Xi’s baby to show how great China (and really his leadership) is to the world. From all reports he has taken a personal interest in these games. This is all about PR to him. He doesn’t want bad press.

That Netherlands reporter was back reporting his story a few minutes later after the video and headlines went around the world. It was a ‘citizen security volunteer’ (or some such title) that helps the police that accosted him. Apparently they didn’t like that he was reporting from a poorly lit dumpy looking street and not the preferred place by the stadium that looks more impressive in the background. It wasn’t the proper image they wanted broadcast.

Yep. All these events that I really don't get to watch very much. Not a big fan of the following though: Figure Skating, snowboarding, flipping around skiing - whatever it's called., short track skating Heck, I'll even watch biathlon.
