HOT ****!!!
EFF YOU DALLAS!!!!

Yeah, I was driving when the news was released. There was a report earlier today that the Birds felt pretty confident about signing Shaq, but there's been so many stories about him in the past week (mostly from Dallas-area media) that were glorified guesses that I elected to not post the report from earlier today, and wait until Shaq actually announced his decision.

The part of your post that I bolded is always appropriate, but especially during one of the two "Dallas weeks" during the NFL season.

I did not know it until recently reading it how banged up Eagles have been at OLb, It sure showed vs. 49ers-they were weak on edge and on short passes-speed at OLB can correct that problem. Hope they get players back or addition of Shaq Leonard helps.

I saw that the Eagles can lose to the Cowboys and win out, and still win the NFC East on tie breakers. I don’t want them to go that route, but good to know.

It seems the pile-on against the Eagles continues this week. Everyone and the family dog is picking Dallas on Sunday night. It was good to read that even if the Eagles lose, as long as they win out, they still own the ultimate tie breaker for the NFC East crown.

But loss #3 would bring the number two playoff seed into play. I can easily see the 49ers winning out given their current form. Their only issue will be the inevitable rash of injuries that plague them under Shanahan.

Roob is spot on. The entire defense has fallen off. The DL has not been getting the same rush as the season has worn on.

Some of that may be the increased success of running against this Eagles D, but the DL has been way off compared to last season. That can’t all be up to losing Hargrave.

Unless the DL gets home a lot more, they may be destined to fail early in the playoffs this year. The defense just isn’t good so far and the offense isn’t dominant enough to carry them past teams like SF and possibly even Dallas.

Well to help the D we need the O to go back to those 10-12 play drives

I totally agree with your take (and with Roob's). "What's wrong with the Birds' D" has been a topic that has come up in many of my conversations this week (as well as on Philadelphia sports talk stations). My take has basically been the same as yours, @WestSideLion -- injuries have hurt in the DB and at LB, but the bigger issue is the lack of pressure from the DL. Correcting that (if it's possible) would go a long way to minimizing the injury issues at the other positions, as well as a long way toward solving the issues the Birds have had on D this season.

The question becomes, what was so different last season? Was it Gamnon’s scheme or a dominant offense that built leads and forced teams to throw the ball while playing catch up?

I think it may have been the latter which exacerbates the Steichen loss and Johnson’s middling performance in year 1.

Fix the offense and the rest largely falls into place.

yeah, I've been wondering the same question, and don't have the answer. There's no doubt that in many games last year, the Birds' O was so good that the opposing team was forced to pass, which makes rushing the QB that much easier. But the Birds' D rush seemed to be effective even early in games last year, when the outcome was still very much in question.

My instincts are the same as yours regarding the answer here, but I think you'd have to go back and analyze each game last season -- particularly the ones which were close (i.e., not blowouts) to be able to provide a good answer to the question.

Hopefully, the Birds' D rush can come alive tonight against the Cockroaches.
