Missouri preview

Since joining the league in the 2012-13 season Mizzou has gone 4-8 against us. That is more wins than any teams except UK 5-19 and
UT 6-9. We are 2-4 at the other Columbia.

WHY? For all her faults Pingeton is a very good offensive coach who has exploited matchups and run excellent sets against us. She has had talent that is hard nosed and tough(Notice I did not say dirty cheap shot artists😇😇) They will find ways to score on us especially in the first half and if we are lazy and mentally lax on D.

Mizzou is a good shooting that has no true post player. They shoot 46% from 2 an 37% from 3. Quite good for a team that lives on the perimeter.

Angelique Ngalakulondi was their starting center but is out injured as is PG Mama Dembele. This means Haley Frank will be the starting post player. She played post and TORTURED us from 3 pt land two years ago in our loss. Boston absolutely could not guard her on the perimeter with their pick and pop. Will Kamilla do better? Or will Dawn try something/someone else?

Soph. Ashton Judd and Fr. Grace Slaughter have really stepped up. Both are 6’1” and can do damage inside or outside. Hannah Linthacum provides what little post depth they have. Schreake Fr. and Feit Sr. have been strengths off the bench but one of them will start. Both are 6’1” but neither are PGs. That is the big question for them tomorrow, who can/will play point? I’m betting we will see Frank running the offense a great deal in half court. I’m also betting Raven will be hounding the designated ball handler. They have more turnovers than assists and that was with Dembele playing. Dembele also had almost four steals per game, her absence is a big loss on both ends of the court.

I think we struggle some in the first half but win by 20ish. But strange things seem to happen in COMO
I think Dawn will have someone else guarding Frank if she is playing the post. Cardoso is not fast enough to cover her if plays on the perimeter and we need her to clog up the middle anyhow. Don't see how she would be much more effective than Boston covering her. I suspect Dawn sent a strong message to her team after the last performance and they will respond in a very positive fashion. If Dembele does not play we win by 30+.

Where is tonight’s game on tv? Can’t find it on Spectrum.
Go ESPN on your computer. Select WBB and then USC-Mizzou on SEC+. If you have never done this before, I believe that you have to select Spectrum as your source of SEC and may have to log onto Spectrum from the ESPN ap.
Good luck!

Gamecocks with a slim, low-scoring 16-13 lead over the Tigers at the end of the 1st Quarter. The Gamecocks had shot well to 7-13 (.538), before closing out the first period 0-3. Breezy Hall leads the way with 10 of their points on 4-4 shooting. Missouri has shot 4-15 (.267) in the quarter, and out-rebounded South Carolina 11-10. Grace Slaughter leads Mizzou with 8 pts on 3-7 shooting, 2-2 from behind the arc.......

Gamecocks picked up the offense a bit, out-scoring Missouri 20-5 over the final 6 minutes of the 2nd Period, and lead the Tigers 41-28 at the halftime.

Bree Hall is still red hot, leading the game with 16 pts on 6-6 shooting, 3-3 from behind the 3-pt. line. Te-Hina Paopao added 8 pts on 3-6 shooting, 2-3 from behind the arc, as the top WCBB 3-point FG % shooting team in the nation shot 6-13 (.462) from the three.

Ashton Judd leads Missouri with 9 pts on 3-5 shooting with 6 rebounds, and Grace Slaughter adds 8 pts - all in the 1st Period - on 3-7 shooting. Both Judd and starting F Hayley Frank picked up 3 fouls each, so the Tigers will be dealing with foul trouble when the 2nd half begins.....

Why are we so non-dominant tonight? It's reminding me of how McGuire's good teams used to play at Maryland.

South Carolina survived a torrid start to the 2nd half by Missouri, and lead the Tigers 59-46 at the end of the 3rd Period. Mizzou jumped out on the Gamecocks 11-6 behind Frank's 3-pt. shooting, but the Gamecocks stayed poised and eventually ended up tied in scoring with the Tigers 18-18 at the end of the quarter.

Missouri shot a white hot 4-4 from behind the 3-pt. arc - 3-3 by Frank herself - before falling back to Earth finishing 4-7 for the period.

Frank now leads Mizzou with 16 pts on 6-11 shooting, 4-8 behind the 3-pt. line. Bree Hall now has 21 pts on 8-9 shooting (yes she finally missed a shot), 4-4 behind the arc.

South Carolina wins 81-57 to improve to 15-0, 3-0 in SEC play. Missouri falls to 9-7, 0-3.

Bree Hall led the Gamecocks with a career high 21 pts - all scored through the first three quarters, on 8-10 shooting and 4-4 behind the 3-pt. line. Te-Hina Paopao added 15 pts on 6-10 shooting, 3-4 from the 3. Raven Johnson, Ashlyn Watkins, and Sania Feagin each added 10 pts - Watkins and Feagin filled the void nicely for Kamilla Cardoso and Chloe Kitts, who each had off nights. Cardoso did lead the team with 8 boards, but only 7 pts on 2-5 shooting.

Hayley Frank and Ashton Judd each led Missouri with 16 pts, and Grace Slaughter chipped in with 12 pts.

The Gamecocks shot 33-64 (.516) from the field, 8-15 (.533) from behind the 3-pt. line, and 7-8 (.875) at the free throw line: all with Cardoso, Fulwiley, and Kitts - 3 of our top 5 scorers on the season - combining to shoot 3-12 in the game for a combined 9 points. They are averaging a combined 34.0 ppg coming into tonight's game. Shows the depth and balance we have this season.....

First off, congratulations to the 2024 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Ashlyn Watkins. She's wayyy ahead of every other player in the conference, except Cardoso. I thought Cardoso's defensive rebounding numbers might keep her in the conversation, but Watkins' ability to defend at all 3 levels is amazing. In that way, she's different than Boston or Aja. She's more comparable to Amihere. Her defense turned the game around -- anytime Mizzou made a run, she came in and made life much harder for Frank.

I really loved the lineup that included Paopao, Tessa, Bree, Watkins and Feagin. The 3 perimeter players can space the floor nicely and Feagin is our best back-to-the-basket low post player. Feagin's is also a sneaky good passer. We were +30 with Watkins on the floor, +23 with Feagin, and -6 with Chloe (ouch).

Credit to Dawn for recognizing it was not Kitts's night and reducing her minutes in the 2nd half. There will be better matchups for her down the line, I'm sure. She is very effective in the middle of the zone defense, but teams are almost exclusively playing man-to-man against us now. Both Kitts and Cardoso could do better with their backs to the basket. Dawn has the pieces and she's making the necessary adjustments.

Fulwiley is, well, who I predicted she would be in the preseason -- a little up and a little down. She started the season so well, maybe we thought there would be a lot more ups than downs. She's just needs more time to adjust to the college game, like every freshman. I expect her to play important minutes for us down the stretch of the season.

The underlined quote is something no one anywhere would have said about the Gamecocks' opponents, just 1-2 seasons ago. It's crazy to wrap my brain around. And playing man against a deeply talented team like the Gamecocks only spells doom for all comers - they can't rely as much on help defense that zones provided in the past, can't relax like zone D gave them opportunities to do in the past. All the better for us.

Milaysia is displaying the one most prominent issue all first-year players display, no matter men or women, no matter the sport: inconsistency. They can often show flashes of brilliance that showcases their talent and potential for the future, but then right after often show that they are in fact, green freshmen after all. The biggest development in every athlete's performance is consistency game after game, win or lose, regardless of opposing match-ups.

This was simply a bad game for Milaysia, and she has had a few in succession in recent games. Perhaps opposing teams and coaching staffs are developing a "book" on Milaysia, like opposing staffs do with a star pitcher in baseball that they have had a chance to stand against in a few games by now. Perhaps its just a case of Milaysia losing some of her focus and enthusiasm that she had pent up to start the season. But no doubt she'll ride through this low stretch of games, and explode again - perhaps as soon as the next game she plays....

Over the last 6 games including Missouri, Bree Hall has shot 31-45 (.689) from the field, and 16-23 (.696) from behind the arc. The only downside is that she's also shot 6-12 (.500) from the charity stripe, after shooting 9-11 (.818) there prior. But Bree is averaging 14.0 ppg over the last 6 games. Another offensive force developing her game.....and a great perimeter option to develop alongside Paopao, who is currently the nation's top 3-pt. FG shooter at .552% coming into the Missouri game, now shooting .563. Hall is now shooting .500 from the arc with her torrid run.......

From shooting analytics perspective The Gamecocks played an almost perfect offensive game.

First shooting percentage: FG 51.6% 3pt 53.3
FT 87.5%

Of our 81 points 44 were from in the paint, 24 were from 3 pt, and 7 were from the line for a total of 75 points. Only 3 scored baskets were mid range shots which are considered the lowest return on shots

I’m so so proud of Feagin! I hope this is a catalyst to get her going for the rest of the season. She was constantly moving on Defense and as @DarkCock saud above she’s a great passer. I think she’s starting to see the joys of assists. If she keeps this up I’m going to have to buy her shirzee too 😋
She had a great game. Important to built on this since it looks like we will be without Kamilla for a couple of games.

After the Miss St game CDS chewed out the team after the game for missing their standards. See: https://www.on3.com/teams/south-car...dawn-staley-called-sundays-win-disheartening/

After the Mizzou game, did CDS change her opinion? Were we closer to her standards?

It was a good win and I think we were closer to her standards but we need to find a way to work around screens better on defense and spin off defender when going to the rim when on offense.

It has been fantastic to see how CDS and the team can use the hottest shooting players in the mix of a great roster. Depth of quality players matters.

As of this morning, we're shooting 42.6% from 3. #1 in the nation. 15 games into the season. I suspect we'll continue to see man-to-man from here on out.

Why not when we have a fast break to stop at the top of the key area and shoot a three? Blow out each opponent.

I stated earlier that Watkins is the frontrunner for SEC Defensive POY; she also has to be a leading candidate for SEC 6th Woman of the Year.

I haven't watched enough SEC ball to assess the other candidates. I know all the LSU stars are starters. Tennessee doesn't have a player in the mix. Anyone else?

Some coaches would start Watkins and put our leading scorer and rebounder on the bench! Cardoso could come off the bench after the coach sees how the other team is playing defense.

CDS is doing the right thing to keep the players happy in their roles. Just agreeing that Watkins is doing great.

Amazing turnaround from the last few years when teams dared and wanted us to shoot the 3. It wasn't just Iowa. We shot 31% as a team last year.

Been 6-1 the last two times out but most games were mismatches cause it ain’t that easy and I ain’t that smart

UK vs Gamecocks✔️
Preview tomorrow but this is a feel good, clear the bench, name your margin game. I am very interested to see how Ajae Petty fares against us. Last year she was 6&5, this season 16&11. If they awarded a most improved player, she is it and should get at least 2nd team all SEC.

UGA vs UF✔️
Two struggling teams facing off. Really a do or die game for both teams. UF because, they have faced a tougher schedule, have played more consistently and are at home. But it should be close.

Auburn✔️ vs LSU
Sticking to my stated principles but we know the Mulkey’s win by 30+.

Arky vs Bama✔️
Bama is tougher, plays better D, is more consistent and is a better rebounding team. So watch Arky hit 25 3s and win by 40 like they did against UGA. Arky is the Forrest Gump box of chocolates 🍫.

UT✔️vs A&M
If A&M is going to get a top four in SEC play this is a must have game. A&M played a weak OOC while UT over reached. Over reaching pays off for UT in conference play

Mizzou ✔️Vs Vandy
Mizzou loses and the moving van shows up in front of Robin Pingeton house. Mizzou has had a much more difficult conference schedule so far and should be a difficult matchup offensively for Vandy. Vandy is the surprise team of the league, but they don’t have the size or 3pt shooting to punish Mizzou. Picking an upset but with very little confidence

Ole Miss✔️vs Miss St

OM plays excellent D but has had its struggles at times on offense. Miss St plays good offense sometimes. OM in an ugly, uglier, ugliest game.

Stanford beat Utah last night. Play Colorado tomorrow. It feels like they should be ranked higher than 8th. In their only loss, Brink was sick. They get both LA schools at home, so they are in a good position for a #1 seed out west.

Seems like Stanford is doing fine without Lauren Betss and UCLA is doing fine with her.

I actually expected her 3 point shot to be much better. She misses ugly much of the time. Will need much work in the off season

She definitely needs to hone in her craft. When she's on she's on, but when she's off she's really off. I'm hoping this time with Pao Pao specifically could be of help for her. She's has the tools just need to know when to use them.
