I noticed that. They only used one bench player in the first half and morrow, Reese and Johnson all played atleast 38 min. I can’t imagine bench players will be happy if this is a trend for the rest of the season.

If our ladies push the tempo against LSU like they did against Florida, LSU will be sucking wind by the third quarter.
for comparison sake, Raven, Paopao and Watkins were our 3 best players in Last night‘s 20+ win and all played 26 minutes or less.

Thought y’all would find this comical …

This is from a poster on a Tenn board.

Until I watch Vanderbilt later tonight, my pick for last place in the SEC is Florida.

One thing I noticed for the first 4 to 5 minutes they were beating SC pretty handily on the boards but couldn’t make a layup.

This years South Carolina is not nearly as dominant as last years SC.

They will lose multiple SEC games but will contend for the #1 seed and be the favorite to win the SEC.
Based on last night, if UK isn't the worst team in the conference, then, ironically, it's probably Auburn. (And Vandy won their game. lol)

Great shooting night. 50-40-87 is terrific.

Player of the game was Raven Johnson. We were +34 with her on the court. She pushed the pace while only turning the ball over once.

Paopao and Fulwiley played well too, but 8 turnovers between them made them less effective than Raven.

Cardoso and Watkins dominated inside, especially on defense. Bree continues to play at a high level.

Matharu was 3-18 shooting. 🫨

No one is rooting harder for Feagin than me, but she's got to cut down on the turnovers. Dawn benched her in the 2nd half.

And almost flawless performance overall, save the 18 turnovers.
I could be wrong but Feagin may have sat the second half bc I saw her shaking her hand like she jammed her finger on a pass to her. Hoping it was just a jam.

Thoughts, Assessments and over Reactions around the league after opening night.

This league is just a muddle after the Gamecocks and LSU. Clearly LSU is a top 10 team and should beat everyone in the league except us on talent alone. And as @USCEDGE noted they have no bench and are a poor 3 point shooting team. Plus in their 4 Power 5 game they are giving up 75 ppg.

Arky: No bench and well… they will always disappoint or surprise you. For a team so dependent on 3 pointers they are a slightly below average 3 point shooting team. Dauda,
their post is a foul out waiting to happen.

UK: Still a cellar dweller even with their win last night, they will more than I thought but are still not good. Scherr is still a top talent. And Ajae Petty would be voted 2nd team all SEC and most improved player in league if the vote was held today.

I know Velez and Del Rosario came in as a packaged deal being close friends. Unless things change soon, I don't see Velez staying and Del Rosario might follow suit as well. I definitely think HVL transfer really messed with Velez getting any significant playing time.

Velez could leave but I think it will be around portal issues. LSU has pg issues for next year and clearly Mulkey does not trust Velez with meaningful minutes this season. They lost out on Cambridge but are bringing in Jada Richards #98 in HoopGurlz. I doubt she is the answer. I imagine they will be in the market for a pg and several other players during portal season. Reese says she is coming back for a 5th year but I just don’t believe it.

I doubt she would have seen crazy minutes even if there was no HVL, but on this roster I thought she would at least see 10 minutes a game against their very light schedule. She can barely get any minutes even with a struggling HVL playing out of position, that doesn't seem promising for her.

South Carolina is a statistical anomaly at this point of the season. The Gamecocks have the best offensive rating in the country, besting Iowa by 2.5 points per 100 possessions, per Her Hoop Stats. They also have the best defensive rating in the country by 7.9 points per 100 possessions. The gap between South Carolina and second-place Stanford is bigger than the gap between the Cardinal and the 25th-best defense in the country, Washington. Opponents shoot 28.3 percent from the field against the Gamecocks, which almost defies comprehension. That’s a batting average, not a basketball statistic.

The article was published January 3, so prior to last night's game vs. FL.

They looked gassed in the first half! Van Lith has put on a few lbs. and not as quick as last year. We should run them out of the gym! My only concern is that the officials might want to become a factor. Seemed as if every time a LSU big girl took a shot they called a foul.

I thought it was telling that the Florida player who gave the scouting report before the game said the Gators had to hold us to 63 points. They scored 66, so that assessment was correct. Our defense is so consistently good from game to game that opposing coach know that they aren't going to light up the scoreboard against us. They have to play well on defense and hope we miss a few, maybe more than a few. Not the case last night. I believe we had 48 at the half.

generational scorer but her on court antics, particularly her penchant for expecting/begging/scowling at refs for foul calls after any contested shot make it hard for me to root for her
It's ok, she and her Iowa teammates went to Rutgers and sold the place out. The article talks about how little girls showed up in Jersey's with Catlin's name on the back. Catlin Clark is a phenomena all her own!! And a HUGE national following!!

Maybe b/c it was conference play, but it appeared to me that was the most engaged & locked in AW has played this season. Her athleticism on her blocks and rebounding really popped last night.
Second year progression. She is playing more under control and understands her role better. She will get even better

Mulkey clearly does not care about developing players through actual in game experience. And yes she will over re riot through the portal if it benefits her … hopefully re riots take notice.
Re riots twice in a paragraph has to be a record about coaching 😂😂😂

She has been dating Suggs of the Magic . Made we wonder when I first saw her first LSU game. Looked like she took the entire summer off.

Her summer workout partner was Paopao, very obvious who put in the extra work. HVL is not in shape. I wonder how long she has been dealing with plantar fasciitis and how that has affected her conditioning. She is also just a small framed short player. She is listed at 5’7 but I don’t think she is that tall. Because of her frame I think she looks more out of shape than she might be.

You look at their 13-3 record and think good team. You look a little deeper and the schedule is just crap. Have played 3 power 5 teams: Vandy (L) Miami (L) Clemson 3 point victory at a neutral site. Their best win is Colorado St. This was a furious 4th quarter rally sparked by Colorado State’s only big getting her 4th foul early in the 4th quarter. They beat Belmont by 1 when the refs swallowed their whistles for the last 10 seconds of the game. They lost to Chattanooga although they were missing Carter and Barnum.

This is a bad record for a team that has their talent and size.

Jessika Carter is 6’5” and a talented low post player. I would not be surprised if she made a WNBA roster.

Erryn Barnum 6’2” averaged 15&7 last year at Arky. She gives them more size 9&6 this year.

Jerkaila Jordan, their best player, is all SEC caliber 17&6 and she is only 5’9”. She shoots 50% and 40% from 3pt. She is the catalyst and go to player.

Debreasha Powe 6’1” was all freshman last season and averages 12 ppg

Lauren Park-Lane rounds out the starting 5 PG. Although tiny at 5’3” she has a very good handle and is quite quick 9ppg and 6 assists

You look at all the team stats and all the correct boxes are checked off. Plus 12 rebounding, hold opponents to 56 ppg. Don’t turn the ball over that much. Good shooting team from 2 and 3.

They pass the look test and All the Stats say this should be a very competitive game. BUT I saw them against Belmont, Miami, Clemson and Chattanooga and something just doesn’t add up. I hope they don’t put it all together Sunday. If they do, it will be a 4th quarter game with us still winning. If we win by 20+ I’m not sure if that will say more about our excellence or their under performing.

Watching the Vandy game, I was surprised State lost that one. They have two experienced SEC centers in the starting lineup and still lost the paint battle. They were outrebounded by the smaller Commodores. Carter had 13 rebounds, Barnum had 3 and no one else had more than 1. I believe Carter and Barnum scored 8 points between them.

If Cardoso does nothing more than negate Carter, that's a win for us. MSU really needs Carter to outplay Cardoso to stand any chance of winning.

HUH? I created this thread years ago....seems if you don't like my posts, maybe you should go away...
Just because I pull for Catlin to do well does not mean I'm not pro Carolina. I am a graduate and long time supporter of the Gamecock Club, the Alumni Assocation. I give lots of $$$ to Carolina so anyone who thinks, I am going away can kiss my "shrimp & grits".

Picks for the SEC Games today

MISS St vs Gamecocks✔️
Second half beatdown

Ole Miss✔️vs LSU
don't really believe this but I am picking against the Mulkeys every game this season on general principles

UF vs Vandy✔️
Believe Vandy is better coached and more fundamentally sound. Should be a close game. It’s at Vandy and I just don’t like Kelly Rae.

UK vs UT✔️
Surprise showing by UK doesn’t sway me. Rickea is the difference maker

UGA✔️vs Arky
Arky is so incredibly inconsistent. How can you ever pick them or for that matter pick against them?? UGA has the depth and D to pull this out

A&M✔️ vs Auburn
Too much Talent and D for the plains women.

Bama✔️vs Mizzou
Offensive team vs defensive team, going with D.

I wanted to start a private Conversation with you on this subject, but cannot, as it appears you have blocked me. So I reluctantly and carefully post this. I do not think you appreciate what your comments on DS vis a vis Kitts stirred up or how it portrays you as a person.

Yes, you started this thread, Thank you, but you don’t own it. Many contribute more and more often than you do. Your comments regarding Staley and Kitts were a lie. In addition many regard them with dismay even disgust. Your comments are not normative of many of the regular posters on this thread. You have a chance and a forum to make peace or double down. The choice is yours.

I thought that was our worst game of the year after watching. Poor defense, too many easy buckets for MS, we did not rebound well and missed some very easy shots. However, the stats do not support what I was seeing except in the rebound department. We won by 19 but I feel like we should have won by 30. Lots of room for improvement. Guess we can't be dominant every game....

I felt like it was a game where we were very uninspired. Nice to win by 20 when no player looked like they were really into the game. Hope that doesn’t continue (I don’t think it will)
Outside of Breezy, totally agree. Defense was bad.

The missed easy shots bother me more than the defense. Kicking people's butts can yield some improvement on defense. Missing easy shots? Not so much.

Not sure I agree that the defense was bad. We held them to 36% shooting, 12 points below their average. They only scored 12 and 13 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, when we pulled away. The 1st quarter wasn't good defensively, but showing our exceptional balance, we scored 26 in the 1st ourselves.

The reason the game was closer than some expected was rebounding-- we only won that battle by one. And we allowed 22 offensive rebounds. Chloe had a nice shooting game but had only 1 defensive rebound. She only played 16 minutes, Watkins played 28, mainly for that reason imo.

Honestly, if you told me those rebounding numbers before the game, I would have thought it would be closer. In fact, that was one of my keys to State winning. But Carter didn't do enough for them and our guards took care of the basketball.

Well we were up by 27 with 3 minutes when we cleared the bench, so I view it as a 30 pt win.

That said, we had so many missed opportunities and sloppy play on the offensive end. It cost us at least 20 points.
On the defensive end we lost our player and made poor switches too many times in my opinion. However MISS St. is good offensive team with talented players, so you have to give them some credit for this

So, with Arky playing like Jekyll and Hyde, it's looking more and more like Vandy will be the surprise team in the SEC this year. They beat a good UF team today.

Got curious about attendance for the weekend. Granted this is a one game snapshot that is always skewed by both matchups and arena played. For example both the Gamecocks and UT WBB played at home and drew over 24,000 for the two games. Even with that factored in I was surprised at the numbers

ACC WBB 7 games 28,100 for 4K per game

SEC WBB 7 games 52,900 for 7.5K per game USC 15,751 highest attendance

ACC MBB 7 games 61,400 for 8.8K per game

SEC MBB 7 games 92,200 for 13K per game
USC 11,382 4th highest attendance
