Did anyone else see Jason Whitlock on his tired podcast go on an over 60 minute rant about Dawn Staley. Just defaming the woman. Lying about how she just found God this year. I guess he did not bother to research that Staley said it was a divinely ordered for us to win on this day after we beat Connecticut in 2022. Still not giving the lady credit as a coach. Instead doubling down by talking about how much of an embarrassment it was for Iowa to beat us last year. I guess he had to change it up after going on all year about how Iowa was going to beat us. So, now we just have too much talent. What a cornball.
No, I've never watched his podcast, even though I don't necessarily dislike the guy. No offense, adcoop, but if the guy made me as mad as he makes you, I think I'd just stop watching it.

He doesn't make me mad. I knew he would go on his podcast lying the next day. I just wanted to see what the lies would be.

Too ignorant to have the ear of that many people, but what are you going to do?

To our "experts" (they know who they are ;) ): are we looking to take anyone from the portal? If so, in what area of need? How many do you project us to have on the roster in '24-'25?
I tend to think coach isn't looking to the portal, unless Sakima Walker decides not to return. Personally, I am not of the belief that we should bring in a big for her senior season to play the 5 along with Tac, while Kitts, Watkins, Feagin and Joyce split time at the 4. We need those last 3 to play the 5 a lot.

My speculation is that Watkins and Feagin will start next season. Dawn will make it up to Kitts by pairing her with Joyce Edwards. Chloe and Edwards played together at the U19 Fiba tournament. Joyce was killing teams on the inside.

Now, before someone says "Germany is not good," Hannah Hidalgo dominated no more or less than Joyce did against the same level of competition. Both were the only two USA players named to the all-tournament team. Edwards played many more minutes than Madison Booker. Look what Hidalgo and Booker did this season at the college level playing a lot of minutes. Personally, I don't see bringing in a senior who could take playing time from Joyce.

I don't know how coach felt about only carrying 11 players, but I liked it. We lost Jah; there is always the potential we could lose a player during the season. We played with 9 when Cardoso was playing with Brazil. The result was Tessa Johnson got a lot of playing time and by the end of the season she was a HUGE contributor. I feel like all those minutes at the end of games for Russell, Thompson, etc in years past were mostly wasted. Posters on here actually complained about them not getting in the game, even though Dawn is rather generous with playing time for the end of her bench. Don't see what we gain by carrying that many players. I prefer a smaller bench of 5-star players.

So...Kitts, Feagin, Watkins, Edwards, Tac, Walker. That's more than enough imo.

The guards seem to set, but let's not forget we are in the final 5 for Emely Rodriquez. I would think Jah leaving and winning a national championship would work in our favor, but who knows? She has a couple of Florida schools on her list, so she may want to stay closer to home.

Always good input as usual, thx Dark. I expect to see SC LGC’s playing at the highest level once again next season even if we stay pat, we have the horses and tbh you never want to overload the bench where some just sit most of the year, let the ones here play, they can get it done and no need to overload, that can backfire at times.

I'd like to see her carry 12 or 13 players. UConn had 5 season ending injuries. I know that's rare but we'd been left with 6 players or 5 if Jay had already left.

We were hugely fortunate on the injury front this year. It's asking a lot for that trend to continue. We had some adversity in 2017, but we also had some great people we acquired from elsewhere to help out. Otherwise, the first championship would have been in doubt.

12, OK. 13, I don't know. Despite all those injuries, Geno still didn't play Amari Deberry and Ines Bettencourt. He only played 6 against Iowa. Dawn is going to play everyone on her roster. That's why I thought the shorter bench this season was actually an asset. But I understand your concern.

I found this interesting infograph on social media the other day:

USCF2.png

(the bottom 3 ranked players coming out of high school--Saxton, Fletcher, Thompson--went 0 of 9 against Iowa last year.)

This upcoming season, the roster could potentially be made up of 11 players ranked between #2 and #26.

If we add anyone in the portal, I think it should be a younger player since we lost two young players Cooper and Jah last season.

With Tara retiring you got to wonder about transfers. In my opinion Kiki Iriafen would be the #1 portal pick if she enters. That would be my dream roster pickup. Her game fits us so well.
They are elevating Tara's top assistant, Kate Paye, so they might have pretty good continuity.

Wonderful career. I wonder if the prospect of playing conference games on both coasts had anything to do with this? I wouldn't be surprised.
Cameron Brink basically said this is why she didn't consider using her extra year of eligibility. Traveling twice a week across the country has to be draining. I wouldn't be surprised if more people leave Stanford and Cal for the same reason in all non-Football sports.

How could people smart enough to run Stanford and Cal make a dumb decision like joining the ATLANTIC COAST Conference?

I think other facts contributed to her retirement as well. The biggest recruiting edge Stanford enjoys over other colleges is the value of a Stanford degree is more than almost every other school. But it's no longer just about a scholarship; players can straight get paid. The transfer portal is also a net negative for Stanford, almost exclusively negative. The portal taketh, but never giveth. A player can't transfer from LSU for their senior year and get a Stanford degree. And graduate transfers are almost impossible, considering how difficult it is to get into a Stanford graduate program. For a couple of years now, Stanford has been an athletic guard or two away from a possible national championship but no way to address that need in the portal.

We'll see if Stanford can continue to be top 10 program in this new era. I enjoyed the burgeoning rivalry. I don't think it's good for wbb that Tara's Stanford has been replaced with Mulkey's LSU as a nationally prominent program.

Too bad Stanford didn't go with Scott Rueck from Oregon State. He's a proven winner on the west coast who could have brought some talented players with him. But it was inevitable that a female assistant would replace Tara, much like Warwick replaced Summitt, I suppose.

It would be a shame, but it's also a probability.

The decision to join the ACC was born out of desperation to remain aligned with a Power Five conference, one that competes seriously in most of the same sports Stanford fields. The question will become the viability of the ACC as a major conference should it become degraded in the next round of realignment.

Desperation moves are often regretted when careful analysis is done.

Not just this year, either, as you point out. I think last year the same players that started game one started the final four loss. I was looking at Cardoso and Raven Johnson going out of the NC State game at the final four semifinal game this year and wondering if our opportunity to win the finals had just disappeared on injuries that we had not had all year. Had those injuries been significant, we would have been down to 8 players, one of whom was Sakima Walker.

If someone entering the portal is going to break the internet, then it's going to be someone bigger than Iriafen, along the lines of Bueckers, or some of the fab freshman, Juju, Hidalgo, MiLaysia, or Madison Booker, or someone from LSU (Flaujae or Mikaylah).
