I do not think that anyone saw this upset coming. Nebraska is one of two best teams in the nation, the other being Pitt. What a great performance in a packed Rec Hall.

I watched Pitt demolish Louisville the other night and they are scary good.
I watched some of Nebby spanking Wiscy and they are scary good.

PSU has not been playing the game recently to that level ... until last night.
Nebraska doesn't give points away, you have to earn them.
Last night, PSU earned them.

Gritty performance by a team that was not playing to the level expected of a 4th ranked team, but still winning their matches.

I believe that the "experts" were thinking that after this weekend that Stanford would move up to 4 and drop PSU to 5 or 6. This is critical because the top 4 seeds will host 2 weekends of the NCAA tournament.

Louisville plays at Stanford today. Pitt plays at Georgia Tech. Nebby plays at Maryland.

Tomorrow evening, the NCAA tournament will be announced. I expect PSU to be top 4. I suspect the winner of Louisville -Stanford to also be top 4. Pitt and Nebby also.

I had watched most of the PSU matches, and quite a few of Nebraska's matches. PSU has played very well this season, and was excellent against Purdue. But they got destroyed, 3-0, by Wisconsin, and had lost 1 or 2 sets against a number of teams I thought they'd sweep. By contrast, after an early, stunning loss to SMU, kNU has been destroying pretty much everybody they played, with most matches being 3-0 sweeps (including against Wisconsin who swept PSU, and against tOSU, who PSU struggled to defeat 3-2).

In addition, PSU had inconsistencies on their front line. Mruzik was generally a large part of their frontline offense. Hannah at times was excellent, but at other times seemed to hit into too many blocks. On the other side of the line, Jurevicius at times was excellent. But many other times she was inconsistent. Mendelson and Trammell had good moments at MB, but also had some inconsistencies.

While I was really looking forward to the PSU - kNU match, I thought at best that PSU could keep it competitive, and I gave them almost no chance of winning the match.

I 100% concur that nobody saw this upset coming. It was beyond the stretch to see a realistic way it could happen. But that's why they play the matches.

the kNU - Wisky match really scared me. After watching that, I was pretty sure that Pitt and Nebraska would coast into the final, and battle it out for the NCAA Championship.

Interestingly, GT took Pitt to 5 sets today, and the score of the 5th set was 17-15, Pitt. Stanford took down Louisville in 4 sets.

It will be interesting to see which teams get the 4 regional #1 seeds. Pitt seems to be a lock. I think PSU and Nebraska are both deserving as well. I'm not sure how you decide on the other top regional seed from between Wisconsin, Louisville, Creighton and Stanford. I haven't tried to find the latest RPI, which usually is a big factor in the seeding.

The selection committee has a relatively easy task selecting the top 4. Pitt, Nebraska, PSU, Stanford.

My gut tells me that the Stanford selection will be for geographical "balance". Too many "issues" if a regional is not played out west (think ESPN coverage).

The more difficult selections will be slots 5 - 8, or matching those selections up with 1 - 4. Expect to see Wiscy play in either Pitt or Stanford regional and Louisville play in Nebraska or PSU regional.

I can't imagine a more compelling regional final than Nebraska/Creighton.

Should be a very interesting hour at 6pm.

So the 4 Regional #1 seeds were:

- Pitt
- PSU
- Nebraska
- Louisville

In PSU's regional, Creighton is the #2 seed and Texas is the #3 seed.

In Pitt's regional, SMU is the #2 seed.

In Louisville's regional (a surprise to me as the #1 seed), Stanford is the #2 seed.

In Nebraska's regional, Wisconsin is the #2 seed. You never know until you play, but Nebraska has swept Wisconsin, 3-0, 2 times this season.

Some interesting matchups in the Penn State regional. It is possible we will see an Alyssa D'Errico and Megan Hodge reunion in Rec Hall for a Sweet Sixteen match between Penn State and Utah. They were teammates from 2007-09.

We might also welcome back Maddy Bilinovic of Creighton.
