Since when does the athlete make that decision? Don’t they all think they should always start? If they don’t think that way, you probably wouldn’t want them on the team.

Oh. My mistake. I didn’t realize Willie was the gospel. Kasak went up 2 weight classes since arriving on campus and looked like a full sized 157 last year. He’s also still just 20 yrs old.Where is the indication he won't?
We have that about Duke from Willie and implied from Duke himself, but nothing about or from Kasak.
In other words, we believe our own evidence-free hypotheses over the wrestlers themselves and the guys who talk to them for a living. I guess this means Barr is going back down to 184 too.Oh. Isn’t the entire thread all speculation? So, some speculation is great, differing opinions and speculation is frowned upon. Got it.In other words, we believe our own evidence-free hypotheses over the wrestlers themselves and the guys who talk to them for a living. I guess this means Barr is going back down to 184 too.
Just? Not so fast.Oh. My mistake. I didn’t realize Willie was the gospel. Kasak went up 2 weight classes since arriving on campus and looked like a full sized 157 last year. He’s also still just 20 yrs old.
It all depends on where Goodale needs him.I am pretty sure, well maybe a little bit kinda maybe sure, that Kasak sad he expected to stay at 157 for his career.
And if he does, that would work out perfectly for the lineup.I am pretty sure, well maybe a little bit kinda maybe sure, that Kasak sad he expected to stay at 157 for his career.
Speaking of craziness… gonna be wild watching those 2 fight it out for 74kg in 28Pick 1 out of Duke and Mesenbrink in 2027. Because Duke isn't making 157 again after this year.
Still want to shirt Duke this year?
its not all about money for all kids!!NIL opportunities have changed some kids’ perspective. Extra year of $$ is ok.
LOL well the best start the rest can shirt or sit or transfer! lots of optionsSince when does the athlete make that decision? Don’t they all think they should always start? If they don’t think that way, you probably wouldn’t want them on the team.
I think more than a few PSU wrestlers picked what weight they wanted to go but only the really good guys esp as senior's since Cael had so many good kids it really didn't matter!
Should be pretty fascinating, assuming they wrestle off for '41. Think you probably have to lean Davis considering his edge in recent mat time during actual competition. But Nagao still has All-American pedigree if he's healthy enough finally to reach back to it.With LP's Trackwrestling Weight Cert post out there, in which Nagao weighed in at under 157 & above 149, it's safe to say that 133 is likely to be a bridge too far for him this season.
Anybody care to speculate on the winner of a Davis - Nagao battle for PSU's 141lb 2026 Tourney rep?
We might have another Rasheed/Cassar situation where bonus becomes a factor in the decision.Should be pretty fascinating, assuming they wrestle off for '41. I thought that Lucas Cochran had moved on from college wrestling. Maybe that changed.I expect Lucas Cochran to throw his hat in the ring for 285.
That's what I thought but I was told he's still around and will be on the team this year at 285.I thought that Lucas Cochran had moved on from college wrestling. Maybe that changed.
+1 There are actually a lot of reasons for college athletes to want to redshirt in today NCAA environment (NIL, especially when they play a sport where outside financial opportunities are limited). I can see some of these super alphas like Duke or Blaze not being okay with redshirting, knowing they could compete for an individual title right now, but unless you personally know them or the coaching staff, you don't know what's going to happen. I'll refrain from even guessing, although I think it would be best for Kasak to RS this year and let Duke go, then have Duke RS '26 and see where his weight goes. Whatever the lineup, this team is likely battling history (total points record) and not the rest of the field come next March.
Ferrari, if he gets a medical shirt for the car wreck. (Which he absolutely shouldn't, but who knows with NCAA.)This got me wondering if a true freshman were to win an NCAA title would their interest/willingness to red shirt thereafter evaporate?
Then I wondered if there have been any NCAA champs who actually redshirted the next year.
Naturally, I went to the source of all truth to find out — ChatGPT. It didn’t identify any wrestlers fitting that precise scenario but did say the following D1 wrestlers took an Olympic shirt following an NCAA title year: Yianni D., Andrew Alirez, Steve Mocco, and Andrew Howe.
What say you, fact checkers?
Not that you need me to confirm your info, obviously, but yep, heard that as well. Nice piece to have around no matter how it shakes out, without question. Always enjoyed watching him wrestle when he got to take the mat. That's what I thought but I was told he's still around and will be on the team this year at 285.
didnt Cael redshirt after couple titles.
Pat Smith redshirted after winning a couple titles I think. I just went and looked it up. He won in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994
I’d pay to watch Kasak vs Duke.My prediction..
125..Luke
133..Blaze
141..Ono
149 SVN
157 Duke
165 Mitchell
174 Levi
184 Welch
197 Barr
285 Mirasola
Ono/Davis/Nagao wrestle off for 141 with Ono winning spot. Kasak/Duke wrestle off with Duke winning spot. Barr/Mirasola wrestle off with Barr winning spot. Mirasola/Cochran wrestle off with Mirasola winning spot.
I never miss a chance to complain about that rule only applying to freshmen. It’s silly and should change, in my opinion.Ono certifying 141 was interesting to me. A lot of people thought he was a big 133 (61 for international) and it would be hard to make that for a season (especially when learning folkstyle for the first time) Obviously Ono previously posted his body measurements and he was 5% bodyfat basically weighing 142 so like some mentioned, it could mean nothing.
Here's the situation, Nagao is the only one without a redshirt among the group, however Ono and Davis cannot do the 5 free dates thing (only for true freshman) I believe and Black Knight usually only allows attached wrestlers.
I wouldn't be shocked if they are sent to Clarion instead for a wrestleoff for 141.
The PSU wrestling account has done an interesting amount of hyping up for Nagao again.
Indeed .... it's the only sport that does that I believe.I never miss a chance to complain about that rule only applying to freshmen. It’s silly and should change, in my opinion.
That’s what my research indicates. Just shot an email to NCAA PR asking why that is the case. I can’t find anything in their usual rule releases that indicates why they made the decision that they did. I will report back if I get a response.Indeed .... it's the only sport that does that I believe.
All of the old bromides are out the window when the coaching conversation includes Cael.A high-level coach I know redshirted DT, Zain, Nolf, Nico, Bo, Cenzo, ... and things seemed to work out to perfection for each and every one.
Bob, I'll take door number 2.
I just did some research on this. Pat was intent on competing the year he ended up taking his redshirt. He was motivated to finish his college career and get on to international wrestling. Unfortunately for him, the Oklahoma State wrestling program was sanctioned by the NCAA for some violations. The biggest sanction was that they were not allowed to compete at the NCAA tournament that year. This was ultimately why Pat took his redshirt that year.Pat Smith redshirted after winning a couple titles I think. I just went and looked it up. He won in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994
If he was close to 142/5% he’d have trouble being allowed to wrestle 133 - would have needed to cut significant muscle before cert.Ono certifying 141 was interesting to me. I saw Ono this past weekend. I am surprised if he weighs 100 pounds. He has a great smile and said he wants to live the rest of his life in State College! If he was close to 142/5% he’d have trouble being allowed to wrestle 133 - would have needed to cut significant muscle before cert.
Rumor has it that a young Vodka called the NCAA sanctions folks directly to report the OSU violations.I just did some research on this.
