A few years ago, we thought paying a recruit $2M was crazy. Now this...

I mean Dak got $60 million/year. Is 2.5 million/year for the level below that bad of a deal? Next will be the high school QB getting 50K.

Since we're not talking about a proven player for the level in question, a better comp would be Caleb Williams' rookie contract which was $39.5 million over 4, so ~$10 million per year.
NFL total revenue was $20 billion in 2023.
In 2022, football revenue for NCAA programs was roughly $9.5 billion. If you stop there, then $2.5 million/year is arguably cheap, but when you add in that there's 134 FBS programs with starting QBs vs 32 NFL teams and factor in roster sizes, the argument gets muddy.

I think eventually there will be another division for football which will consist of 30-60 teams. I just pray it's not closer to 30.

Lot's of folks laughing at the Xeno Model that will ultimately threaten the NFL, but... it's coming.

Maybe the fix is to "sell" your athletic department to a company/corporation.

If this needs to run like a business, by God, let's run it like a real business. Unshackle from the NCAA.
I don't think the NCAA is calling the shots anymore. It seems to me it's the courts.

With college football’s annual revenue being around 10% of the NFL’s, one could argue that the kid should be making more

Colorado is already letting high school players get NIL from high school boosters. One running back made the new because he was going to sit out if he didn't get paid.

I pray it is closer to 30. Getting our a$$ kicked because everyone else in the conference has twice as much money to spend as us will get old quick.
You’d rather be left out?
That doesn’t seem like much fun to me.

I disagree. I at least want a shot. I don't want to be in the USM division.
We wouldn't be in the USM division or anything close to it. We'd be in the ACC/Big 12/lower half of SEC and Big 10 division.

10 million is just plain stupid and if he kid leaves or don't pan out their NIL doners will just stop. Paying 10 million for one is guys will just even out the NIL money among schools. Hell, you could go get 15 top 4 stars guys with that kind of money. They are stupid.

This all day long. 17 this "we need your donations to compete" nonsense. If you want to pay a player from part of my ticket purchases, profit off food, eyeballs watching on tv, and the jersey I buy my kid, have at it. I hope they all get paid nicely from that - just like in the NFL. Don't ask me for nickel more. Figure out your business model and get it from the corporate world in advertising/equity investments or convince the fans they need to pay higher ticket prices to compete and be entertained like a normal 17ing sports franchise.

If there’s a top division and we have a chance to be in it, I want to be in it. The money is going to be vastly different between the power 30 or whatever and the rest. Just like right now theres no comparison between conference payouts of Power 4 vs non-P4. TV networks aren’t paying huge dollars for the rights to Illinois vs Rutgers. .

But lets be honest, this current administration couldn't navigate it. Hell, Jack Salmon has already floated out a "we are in the process of vetting strategic partners" when it comes to securing a sponsor for the field. He can't even cash a check to put a logo on the field.

I wonder if any college programs have hired from GM orgs in pro sports yet? Seems like that's the people you should be hiring to navigate this new world. May not solve your NIL problems but at least you've got hardwired profit minded people making decisions rather than old guard being dragged into reality with their fingers in their ears.

I think that's the future. Right now it seems like most AD's are hired because of their background in marketing or fundraising. I'd rather have a Roger Goodell type who is a master at negotiating contracts and leveraging your worth.

I’d be ok with less money & more winning. It not like I’m getting any of that money. And we’d be more on par financially with our peers than we are now.

Exactly. If that extra money was partially directed to my bank acct I would probably feel different but that’s not happening.
