He's definitely bright. I don't know what he's passionate about though. Is he a pragmatic populist? Is he an evil villain that wants to knee cap the executive? Hard to tell. Bright as he may be, he's very typical in the political world in that he's made massive shifts in opinions to position himself for an election win.

Which Vance do we get? Probably 50/50 he ends up with a promotion in the next 4 years given Trump's age/health.

He's anti-abortion and probably doesn't feel super strongly about whether a federal ban at some point in the pregnancy is justified, so that's something he may put his finger in the air on.

And if not you'll blame Biden. And if most metrics are flat compared to what's inherited there will be a moment of "well 2.1% inflation is actually good!". All the possible reactions are predictable. Fact is a very large chunk of voters don't really care about R or D or the name on the ballot. They just toss out the incumbent when gas or eggs go up. They sure as hell don't care about my investment returns last 4 years.

Anyhow, GOP will have to convince everyone things are rosey in the next year or so heading into 26. Will be tough to do outside of the party hardliners with as pessimistic they've positioned despite a pretty solid rebound last 2 years. Can things get better? Of course and I hope they do. But telling voters they are in a shittier hole than reality starts you behind the 8 ball politically bc they expect very quick improvements.

What are the quick wins can most voters expect to see in the next 1-2 years that will make them feel better at the grocery store or gas pump? I doubt the sledge hammer tariff stuff comes into play - that's too pricey for the consumer and will scare off most of Washington. The Vance/Thiel plans to dismantle the executive will be easier said than done and doesn't make eggs cheaper. That's a pet project for ideologues and who knows how far that gets. No tax on tips would actually do it but that's deficit insanity without an offset to the wealthy and going to be very polarizing politically.

Can't remember where I saw it, but a while back somebody posted data on inflation and sentiment that showed it took I think 18 months (or maybe 24 monts) after inflation was under control for people to stop feeling like it was painful. THey weren't comparing actual data on perception of inflation and obviously there weren't a lot of data points, so not sure how much stock to put into it (although it seems intuitive), but I would expect Trump will actually get a lot of credit for bringing inflation down if the inflation rate stays basically where it has been on a month over month basis the last few months. And that should happen provided the republicans avoid doing anything stupid like dropping trillions of dollars of "stimulus" in the next year and provided the feds don't 17 anything up on their own.

Bc I'm a proud OG member of the TDS club! Lonnnnng before his presidency. I think Trump is the antithesis of what a leader should be - whether it be president, business, military, etc. Doesn't share successes. Blames others for failures. Talks himself up. Tears others down. Hasn't admitted he's ever done anything wrong or asked for forgiveness. Loophole and sue you into submission. But it doesn't matter what I think. Just look to the people that have worked for him. Not a good review there. The only people that ever speak highly of him are his family and the people that that currently think they can benefit by working for him. They, too, will join the long list of people he chews up and tosses aside like the trash. His tenacity and knack for survival is incredible but character still matters to me. It doesn't matter to some people but it does to me.

Anyhow, I'd vote for almost anyone else regardless of platform or policy as I still believe our checks and balances can withstand anyone - even an angry Don. We've morphed the presidency into some god-like position that influences our day to day. Tired of all that. Give me a president from any party that is optimistic, will stop making grand promises and simply just run the executive, shun EOs, and tell congress to get off their asses and send them legislation. Be a good diplomat. Let the 3 branches do their thing and kick each other in the nuts and continue our run.

TLDR - there aren't many people I think of less of than him and they weren't his competition. So I voted against him. Simple.

Yep. As clear of a mandate as you can get. Silver lining for me. We needed someone to win to this extent so we know clearly where we are at. No splitting hairs or over analysis required. America has screamed "lower my gas now! Fix immigration!" Maybe toss in some gender/DEI stuff in there but that's gravy/auxiliary to the first two. That's more twitter/water cooler talk than real life daily impacts.

He's going to have the house and senate with clear directives. Can he address what we're asking for? Last time he fumbled and handed it back to the Dems. He's beaten the GOP into submission so it's less likely they don't pull the direction he wants this time. It'll be clear if we are doing well / poorly and who to reward or blame. My biggest hope is they focus on the economy as instructed and don't get a boner for social grievance / abortion legislation at the federal level.

It's great that its down but when they say 2.6% that's year over year. What was it a year ago ? 2 years ago ? 2.6% over 7.6 % over 9.4% is a lot. It would have to go negative for a year to get where it was in 2020. So bragging about the inflation being down is pretty short sighted

Lots of sports are contact sports. Girls have been hurt by boys playing sports like volleyball and basketball and when female players don't want to play out of a concern for their safety, they have been criticized and cajoled by their school administrators.

And lots of sports involve locker rooms, which used to be sex segregated. That was supposedly one of the complaints about the Ivy league swimmer guy, was that as time went on he became less and less shy about waving his around the girls in the locker room, although I don't know if anybody ever went on the record on that so that could have been made up. But regardless, Title IX is really aimed at education, and any schools receiving federal funding that try to have sex segregated facilities are at risk, whether it's bathrooms, dorms, or locker rooms.

This is actually a strong, measured take. But I wonder if you feel the same way about illegal immigration? Because while my child hasn't been murdered by an illegal immigrant, there are quite a few parents who have experienced that nightmare. And while it might not happen very often, happening once is too many times. I do believe there are folks who are kept up at night wondering about the security of our nation under the current administration's border policy.
