The only reason that loss didn’t keep them out of the playoffs is because they didn’t get a second loss. Had they finished 10-2, they would have been out of the playoffs because one of the losses came against NIU. If a team is going to lose, it’s always better to lose to top teams and not middle of the pack teams.

It’s also worth noting that ND did not actually beat anyone that good (best win was Army or A&M I guess). So they have a bad loss and not really any impressive wins. They really aren’t relevant to the discussion

In a complete blow out shiz show that wasn't close at any point. Number one team in the country and has a top two payroll. Yes I said payroll, because that's what it's all about now. tOSU bought the best Safety in the country (Downs) and a top 3 RB (Junkins). We spent the money to bring our DL back for another year and keep what we have because we don't have that kind of money. But blame it on the coach because it's the lazy take.

all of this is just paterno excuse making 101 being repackaged for Franklin. There was always some reason why everyone else could win, but poor joe had to fight with one hand behind his back because allegedly we did it “the right way”. Made it sound more noble when he lost, repeatedly, in those later years. The more excuses the fans made for Joe, the longer he got to stay. That worked out splendidly for everyone. I applaud what James has done so far this season, but this was always the standard he should have been held to rather than the “10 wins against anyone with a pulse is good enough” crap we had to hear about for years at length (paterno advanced excuse making 102). Just wait till next season if James gets knocked out in an early round or fails to qualify at all, Paterno excuse making master classes will be in session.
