Hope we dump Under Armour when contract up. Learned they sponsor so-called Trophy hunting. I can`t think of anything more despicable.

I know I will be in the minority here but I have no interest in shooting a coyote, unless it was attacking my dog or cats. Coyotes remind me way too much of my own white german shepherd and I just dont have the heart to kill one. I understand the reasons people do - the biggest being in SC, they take about 60% of the newborn fawns, but they are a predator. That is what predators do. Now call me a hypocrite, but I will shoot a hog every chance I get, partly because there is a part of hog hunting that is very much dangerous, as they will tear you up if they get a chance, and admittedly, I just dont see a hog in the same light as I do a coyote or a wolf or a mountain lion. However, even with a hog, it should be quick. I dont want to see any animal suffer needlessly.
Cats and small dogs are a delicacy to a coyote. They also dine on smaller or very old deer as well as ground nesting birds. They're probably the reason we have no wild quail anymore. If you want to hunt quail now you have to go on a canned hunt where the birds are raised to be hunted. I've been told these birds are so lame the dogs sometimes catch them in flight. There is such a place near here. I don't hunt coyotes (or anything) either. But I certainly don't discourage the hunting of them. I do fish and I don't want anyone telling me I shouldn't catch or eat fish when I'm not breaking any laws. Full disclosure: I rarely keep any fish either.

I used to really enjoy it and I still love to eat venison and will take friends' offers of free meat all day but unless it is a real trophy buck, I wont be shooting many more deer. I honestly get more enjoyment now out of sitting in a stand, enjoying the peace and quiet of the woods and watching the deer come and go. I cant tell you how many I let walk last deer season. Now I will say that to me, there seems to be much more of a sport when it comes to bow hunting. The problem I have with it though is that so many bow hunters will shoot immediately, never thinking about the likelihood of them being successful in the hunt. Consequence of that is a lot of deer that suffer from an arrow for days before dying somewhere out in the woods. I have thought about getting into bow hunting but at this point, I dont think my bow shooting skills are at the level they need to be in order to quickly dispatch the animal and not cause days of suffering.

You and I think alike...I consider myself a gamekeeper more than a hunter these days.I get more enjoyment out of seeing the quality and quantity of deer I can hold on my property....I usually allow between myself and friends about 4-5 deer per year to be harvested...We try to age the deer as best as possible and only take 5+ year old deer. The biggest thrill I've had hunting the last few years was watching a couple of really nice deer mature into real studs. At the point when they are on the downward arc as far as breeding goes we try and take them then.

Cows provide sustenance...deer do not in most cases. Most hunters that I know hunt for the joy they supposedly get out of it.

That's why I qualified my original statement by saying "unless you need to do it to survive".
Hunting is a lot of fun, but the fun comes from a lot more than just shooting an animal. There's something about getting up early and sitting in the woods by yourself that is hard to replicate. Seeing the sun come up over the trees, hearing the leaves hit the ground, and watching squirrels act like fools is a great way to spend a fall morning. And then the ability to harvest a deer to add a bunch of meat to the freezer is also really gratifying.

I don't hunt but support the right of those who do. Population management is necessary to maintain the health of the herd. Most hunters are ethical folks who consume what they harvest. There are some who take game just to take it but there are asshats in every group as we see on GCC every day.

Nice.

Last time I was on Fripp Island a few years ago, I was amazed to see so many deer wandering around.
Had about 8 or 9 in my backyard the other night. They just hop the fence. I think they like getting into my bird feeder.

When the profanity turns into asterisks it changes your meaning a bit. But insulting something that millions of people in this country enjoy after several pages of thoughtful responses demonstrating both the benefits to conservation and wildlife populations and individual health shows your ignorance. It's one thing to not want to go hunting. That's understandable. But to call it ******** and act like it's a moral wrong is a bit ridiculous.

Go back and read my posts. I qualified my statement and I still stand by it.

Where we live, almost every night I will have 6-7 does and fawns out in my front yard or on the hill to my right. My dog loves to chase them but she never catches them. I know there are some large bucks but they are smarter and stay back in the woods. Rare to see a buck out but they are around....

For someone to disparage all hunting unless you're starving while admitting they eat meat is the height of hypocrisy.
