Right. And whom would the SEC want from B1G territory that isn't Notre Dame - someone attainable, I mean? If the B1G encroaches down here, the SEC has almost no opportunity to reciprocate. If there were a way to prevent that, the league would want to pursue it.
There is very little interest on the part of ND to join the SEC
UVA or VT ? Borders Maryland, that is close as one could get.

8 is a good even number. You play all conference members in all sports each season, with enough room on the schedule for quality OOC matchups.
That's why I believe they eventually will go to 2 8-team divisions. It works out perfectly. That would rule out expanding to 18. If people are honest, they will admit that the SEC has no need to expand further. The SEC is at or near the top of the money-making tree. The SEC has brand names in all the sports. It's the best in football and the best in all the other sports (except men's basketball). And the SEC is only going to get stronger since population migration is primarily moving from the Northeast, Midwest and California to the South from Texas to Florida and all over the Southeast. I don't know about you guys but, I have neighbors who have moved to here from DC, NY, Minnesota, and Oregon When the SEC got Texas and Oklahoma, but especially Texas, the conference's long-term plan finally came together. Could the SEC expand to 18? Sure. But, why mess with perfection? The words of the late, great Joe Morrison comes to mind: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Extremely remote chance, which leaves us with no realistic desirable opportunity to mount an incursion above Kentucky if the B1G gets a foothold down this way.

For that to happen, they would have to repudiate their own stated aim: a virtual round-robin schedule that has all schools circulating through the league over a relatively short period of time. They ain't gonna do divisions in a 16-team league. They're gonna put the the best two teams out there on Championship Saturday and avert the embarrassments of the past. All of us around here should appreciate what I mean. Our team was involved in the worst one ever.

The only chance would have to filed under "Hollywood movie script"
Lure WVU from the Big 12, then go after Louisville,Pitt & VT, after the dissolution of the ACC.

Obviously meant to sound ridiculous, but from other posts I read on here, I figured "Oh, what the hell"

Yep. You went for limited appeal, and you succeeded! But the point remains: the B1G could enhance itself down this way but the SEC cannot enhance itself up that way.

Now, could I see the BIG 12 make a move like this, yes I could see it. The BIG 12 in such a move would then make inroads into both SEC (Ky)/B1G 10 (Ohio/Penn) territory. Almost lock up the area with Cincinnati, Louisville, WVU, and Pitt all within a reasonable drive.
I'm not saying it will happen, or I care to debate this, I'm just saying I could see it.

MD left in 2014. Current GOR was signed in 2016.
Kind of...they actually left late 2012. They officially joined the B10 in July 2014. The GOR was initially signed in 2013, and extended in 2016. The GOR was in response to Maryland leaving. I think the ACC knew they wouldn't be the last, so they moved quickly to lock in all of it's members. Just prior to the announcement, Maryland had just cut 7 programs for lack of funding. If you remember, Clem went through the same thing around the same time. Maryland got while the getting was good. Clem didn't, and it's going to hurt them bigly.

Thanks for clarifying the timeline. I knew MD left prior to the current GOR, but wasn't sure of the details off the top of my head.

Agreed. It's even worse in the B10/ACC. The B10 has Mich, TOSU, and PSU in the same division. That championship game is always a joke. Same with the ACC...why they would put FSU and Clem in the same division is nuts. They're the only 2 programs that really care about football first. That ACCCG a couple of years ago with Pitt/Wake was a real treat, I tell ya!

Well, when Miami joined the ACC, they put FSU and Miami in different divisions because they had dreams of FSU/Miami ACCCG matchups every year. That was the intended goal. It's never happened. Clemson wasn't the program then that they are now. As it's happened, FSU eventually cratered and Clemson took off.

If I recall correctly, Miami requested to not be placed in the same division as their upstate rival.

I don't recall that, but it seems likely.

I just recall at the time all the hype/discussion being about FSU/Miami matchups in the ACCG. Miami was coming of a 4-year stretch of going 46-4 and many thought they were returning to the glory days. FSU had dipped some from their dominance under Bowden, but nobody knew how badly they were actually starting to cycle. out.

Regardless of it all, when Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC.....what a hell of a football conference we will be in. Not saying it will be NFL tough. Am saying that it will be about as close to being NFL-like in college as one could find without actually being in the NFL.

Perhaps, but you'll rarely get to play most other members (at least in football), which seems to defeat the purpose of a conference.

When you're playing three annually and rotating the other six, it won't take but two years to have played everybody. If they go with home and home on consecutive years when rotating the six, which they won't necessarily do, then it would require four years to play everybody.

Rotating the other 5. Like the NFL in divisions. I like the double round-robin against every conference member in hoops. Would like the same in yard if we could schedule another 15-20 games, but then there's that pesky thing called classes.

We are one of the sixteen teams. The three permanent opponents and us account for four. There are 12 remaining to be played but only six in a given year to get you to nine conference games. If you change those six every year, you're through the league in two years. If you go home and home on consecutive years with those six - not a necessity but a possibility - then it would require four. That's still a lot better than now.

Would like for our three permanent opponents to be those closest to us, and we share the same three opponents with the other three, such as what you'd have in an NFL division, and apply that to all sports, e.g., we would play the same three home-and-home each year in basketball (both genders, of course), the same three each year in baseball (and rotate the remaining 7 weekends), etc.

I could see that happening. But also read that Pitt has zero interest in the B12. It's B10 or nothing. I really think the B12 is going to make some kind of bigger move than CO/AZ. Just don't know what it is.

I've been reading a bit on this today, slow day at the office. But as I've been able to gather, NOTHING is going to happen with ACC unless 8 teams have a guaranteed landing spot in the B10/SEC. And if they did, that would probably trigger some sort of legal action from the ACC. VT/UVA are locked in together. They're not going anywhere without the other. I've seen some say the NC schools are the same, and I've seen some that say that's not necessarily true. But I don't think it's far fetched to assume UNC/Duke have the same thought. Then you've got LOU, Pitt, GT, BC, Wake, Cuse, NCST that don't really add anything in terms of football. I can't imagine any would be B10/SEC targets.

I've scoured the interwebs, and I can't find anything that suggests some kind of strategy these teams could use to get out of this thing...other than "get 8 to leave", which seems like an impossible task.

Also, apparently ACC ADs are in conversation with P12 about some sot of partnership. Interesting. "Hey, we're screwed and so are you. We should hang."

So having said all that, I'm not sure what the B10 could do in the SE until 2036.

I'm not, either. I'm just saying that the pickings are more attractive for a league that wants to move south than for one that wants to move north.

No doubt. Nobody is leaving the B10, and nobody is leaving the SEC. When 2036 comes around, I think the SEC holds the upper hand though. There are already built in rivalries that ESPN would love to hang on to vs losing them to Fox.

Or maybe the ACC can negotiate a better deal for its members.

OK, so what do you believe is going to happen in 3 years, and how is it going to happen?
I believe enough of the programs will have "prearranged" landing spots to make it feasible....and don't believe that some of the predictions that if a conference wants one school it has to take both, just that both have to have a comfortable landing spot (i.e. the SEC or the B1G) and that all schools with have landing spots within those one of those two conferences and the Big 12.

I get that. I just don't believe there are 8 programs in that conference that would be accretive to the current deals the SEC/B10 has. And going B12 would be too big of a risk.

Still believe it will be something similar to this....

SEC....VaTech/NCSU/FSU/Clemson
B1G....UNC/UVA/Miami and maybe GaTech/Duke
Big 12....the remainder except UND
Notre Dame will have their own contract and will still play in the B1G in hockey.....and one of these days end up where they belong in the B1G as a full conference member (especially with So Cal now being a part of the conference).

I believe both the Big 12 and the B1G have indicated that they want to be a coast to coast conference.

No one, not even those in current negotiations can say with a 100% certainty know how it will exactly happen at this time.
Just know this, although there are schools working together to achieve a certain goal does not mean they are all working together to end up at the same location or leave at the same time.

The ACC is the only conference with members attractive for picking. The thing is that you are going to have to have enough ACC teams get landing spots to end the GOR. I'm not sure that NC State, Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech would consider a watered down ACC or the Big 12 attractive. And I'm sure they have friends in their respective legislatures to make things uncomfortable for UNC and UVA, I think what you might see is a semi-merger of the SEC and ACC with the southern teams of the ACC being absorbed by the SEC. Would UNC and UVA see the northern tundra attractive? I'm not sure.

Yep, especially with the research funding from the BTAA. IMO their decision will be more academic than athletic....same with Miami. Same reason I think Duke will get an invite as the BTAA has a large cancer research consortium.
