FC- can some of you that are excited about this hire elaborate more why you are positive? I don’t know much about Diaz.

Defenses were really good when we was DC at Miami, it fell off when he became HC. Here's hoping we're getting the DC version of his defense.
One would think he has motivation to “prove” he still has the chops. Looks like he has a more aggressive approach to defense and turnovers. Maybe he will scheme blitzes that actually work!

Interesting. I'm not too familiar with his work but on the surface this seems like a solid hire.

Don't know much about him but it seems like a good hire.

Franklin himself stated he needed a "head coach of the defense" and Manny fits that profile, no "on the job training".

Experience coaching linebackers as well.

Experienced recruiter with ties to the south.

Exactly. Checks most of the boxes. He has a nice history when DC. I’m excited about this one! Welcome Manny!

For the Record not Excited.

He doesn't stay long anywhere--we need a 4-year commitment from him...he ditched Temple when he should have taken that stepping stone job.

Not a great recruiter--the U's reputation helped him with the recruits he got and the fact that a lot of the kids he did get was because the U was the best perceived school offer.

I think this was a best option for Franklin and it "Looks good"

I did like his Energy & Passion when he was the U's DC....hopefully this resonates with our Defense moving forward--No Chains Please!

Hope & Pray I am wrong.

When did he coach at Temple? Are you thinking of Addazio?

"The opportunity to lead Linebacker U is an honor and I will work every day to uphold that tradition," Diaz said in a statement. "Penn State's defense has been among the nation's best, both historically and under Coach Franklin. I will continue to pursue excellence with our defensive unit on a daily basis. I can't wait to get on the field with this talented group, to get to know them, and to ultimately develop them as football players, students and young men."

We’re screwed. 😞

To those who expect a long term commitment from a coach, realize what year it is and how this game is played. You all are types that will be ready to fire him the moment we lose a game late or the defense falls apart while thinking he owes us 3-5 years if he coaches them to top 5 levels.

This is a quality move. He's been a good DC at multiple spots and produced top 15 defenses when he had the horses. He's walking into the best talent of his career potentially.

His units seem to be big on TFL and turnovers. The guy was a hot DC until Richt retired and he went from Temple to Miami in a 3 week span.

This is a very Nick Saban like move. Hire an ex HC whose stock is down to a coordinator job and let him do what he is really good at. Another Southern recruiter doesn't hurt either.

He Didnt...it was similar to Belicheck and the Jets....got the Job offer and Miami offered him the HC job and he reneged on Temple.

Not excited @ all about this hire. He has the same bad tendencies as Pry's defenses: ill-timed blitzes and poor in the red zone end of games. Miami fans indicate his defenses were not good against the run. If true, that compounds the concerns.

Got it. That was so fleeting that I never filed it away.

To round it out, hopefully Diaz believes in playing off the line of scrimmage and the soft zone on 3rd and long.

Yeah I live here so easier for me to keep certain info filed away---it was poorly done and I remember IMHO he was way over his head at the U especially when you weren't a HC prior...

I think we should expect 3-5 yrs from him - similar to MY. That is what you should expect when you go after big names with HC goals. Saban knows Billy O is gone in the next 1-2. If you go with the lower names who develop, then the process is a bit longer. However, we are in a situation where everything moves faster. JF had to score a hire in a week basically.
